Autistic burnout recovery is not a linear process. It's an ever-changing, morphing, iterative process, that when graphed looks like a big messy plate of spaghetti.

I have trouble understanding and identifying my own emotions. Alexithymia is common amongst autistic people.

I will often display an emotion that I see others doing in order to “pass”.

Hey fellow ND peeps, question for you:

Is it just me or is drinking water a wildly unpredictable sensory experience? Like I want to drink more, but there’s so much VARIANCE. Curious what y’all’s thoughts are 🚰💦

@kkarhan ooo I will try that!

@seekingfreedom np.

I think that'll help, as coldness numbs flavours down.

Which is why @fuchsiii and others that like will say that a liqor recommended to be drunk with ice is of poor taste and quality...

I'm working on a blog post about meditation for people who find meditation really difficult, especially thinking about autistic and ADHD folks. If this is you, I would love to know what concerns or questions you have about meditation. Please reply to this post and let me know, what makes meditation difficult for you? @actuallyautistic #actuallyautistic #adhd #audhd

I'm AuDHD but I'm naturally calm, think I meditated for a while and that's what happened.

Meditating in nature is nice. I also think I get more of a friendship-like bond with plants/animals than people.

My short term memory isn’t so great, so I will often find myself putting the same things off over-and-over again in an endless loop.

Do you ever deal with this?

I’m learning to trust my instincts in the face of NT stupid. I show up at ortho office with son’s appliance, after having emailed them to describe how it’s pinching the tendon right in the middle underneath his tongue.

They grind all around the edge. Not in the middle in the physical gap between parts. 🤦‍♂️ I try to clarify where it’s affecting him. They didn’t acknowledge a word.

So I used 400 grit on it tonight and much better! Trust gone.

btaroli,
@btaroli@federate.social avatar

@yourautisticlife I’m honestly happy to have at least said something. I don’t expect much in the way of response. But now I’m on record as being clear I find the treatment poor.

Right now the bigger target of my ire is the therapist sent me to. There is a member services conversation I need to have about reimbursement for an outside therapist. I’m not even going to complain about HIM, but rather suggest they’ve generally been useless.

What has been your experience with focus & executive function compared to folks who solely have ADHD? :NeurodiversitySymbol:

Bonus question: if you've found medication helpful, which type & amount are on (if you feel happy to disclose)? :BlahajHoldingNeurodivergentSymbol:

Some autistic people find making phone calls extremely stressful and unpleasant and will avoid them at all costs.

Please don’t try and force your communication preferences on others.

"Calm down."
🧵

@actuallyadhd

I've heard them pretty much every day of my long life.

Delivered in soothing tones...
Helpful tones...
Authoritative...
Anxious...
Angry...
Sometimes accompanied by a slap.

From Parents. Teachers. Priests. Playmates. Lovers. Doctors. Therapists... Each one demanding one thing of me.

👉Control over THEIR own feelings.

By demanding... control of mine.

WHO needs control when I'm sad?
Angry?
Intense?
Passionate?
Proud?
Informative...
Joyful...
or...
Suicidal?

You folks do.

I'm feeling what I'm feeling. And expressing it in ways that are not only the most natural to me... but also the most appropriate...

To the neurology I was born with.

You may not like it.
In the park.
In the grocery store.
In front of strangers.
In front of Aunt Mary.
In 2nd grade.
👇👇👇

With my office door open.
In your waiting room.
On our 3rd date.
In your house...
In your life.

There's a whole wing of autism deniers masquerading as scholars who say we autistics lack a "theory of mind."

Like adult autistics don't deal with typical human minds
👉 24 / 7 / 365.25 ... 👈

YOUR problem with MY behavior is easier to understand than your whole "theory of mind," "behavioral analysis" crap.

I don't get how YOU think or feel.
You don't get how * I * think or feel...
And we rub each other the wrong way. Just like cats and dogs.

👉THIS cat has a theory of your mind. It's simple.

You don't acknowledge what you think or feel.
Not in public.
Lots of times not even to yourself.

S'why y'all drive me crazy.

Why did parents, teachers, "helping" pros, "friends" tell me to calm down?

Not to soothe my distress. To soothe THEIR distress.

👉 Shame?
Not fun to feel ashamed... of your child.

👉 Fear?
Scary when everybody's looking at you.
And you think it's not even your fault.

👉 Anger?
It's frustrating... when you have no control.
Like... when I don't do what you want me to. Fast enuff.

👉 Soothing?
Of course, YOU need soothing...

Every time someone else's pain...
Or bad luck...
Or death...
Reminds you of YOUR danger.

🚨 "Calm down." 🚨

There is never a time that a command...
implying that an autistic person in distress is doing "something wrong"...
helps.

Doesn't matter our age... education... profession... wealth.

And since your "helpful advice" almost certainly inflames their pain... literally adding fuel to the fire in our hearts, minds, and bodies...

You'll NEVER get the outcome you demand... soothing.

You'll just add one more brick to the prison wall of our trauma.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic @rubenerd In the thick of depression, I’ve learned to take it really slow. That the only thing I need to do is breathe. Sometimes even that is challenging. Luckily it’s a reflex. If I managed that for an entire day, I’ve accomplished something. Everything else is optional.

When I manage to eat something, it’s an accomplishment. When I take a couple of steps outside, it’s an accomplishment. Allowing myself to be “broken” and not struggle against what currently is.

@autism101 @actuallyautistic I learnt the hard way as a teenager to not do it.

Exceptions are:
-if I repackage it in a script as something entertaining
-work, since there's little negative ramifications for sounding like I know how to do my job 😅
