"constant fighting with our own sense of identity causes further psychological distress...

"Instead of asking “what’s wrong w/ me?” We need to shift discourse over to “what happened to me?”. It’s vital that psychological distress be placed in the context of one’s environment&
experiences of the complex power dynamics within them."

Yes. Much more space for compassion, curiosity without judgment and room for growing toward acceptance and healing.. It's a lovely article.

Discussion around sound & light w/ other ND people sounded like this today.
I have a I can't hear you, the other sound is too distracting, or my body temp or something is too distracting. Light has to be really bright, more often outside, to disrupt. Wind? 🍃 Ugh!
If it's sunlight that's really bright when I'm distressed it can stop me in my tracks.. all sensory stimulation seems to go up & down in impact according to my level of emotional regulation. Sound is So powerful for my state(s).

@actuallyautistic Anyone else:

  1. Progressively lost all their friends over the years...

  2. Realized afterward it was due to autistic vs allistic issues...

  3. Wish to make new friends, but...

  4. Now far too burned out to manage the reciprocity needed and the risk of even further emotional damage?

PsychTink,

@ScruffyDux @actuallyautistic

I won't say all because when my social anchors were lost I nurtured others. But I'm very picky about who I let in and life's experiences have made that tendency more embedded.

I'm only recently reviewing the past in this light.

Yes, but,

This ebbs and flows. Currently, I'm dipping my toe in new spaces, but also recently exited others. It's tiresome and also becoming an accepted reality, ie impermanence as well as being ND. Le Sigh 🤷‍♀️

If any of my comrades used to read LOTS of books every year and LOVED it, but can no longer do it, know that it isn’t your fault.

This is one of the side effects of autistic burnout. You’re not alone.

Anyone doing the Immersion course thru ? Starting the recorded training today.
My favorite simple intro to the concepts is the "Parts Work: An Illustrated Guide to Your Inner Life" book by Tom Holmes, PhD & Laurie Holmes, MSW, as well as the Inner Active Cards. Of course the "No Bad Parts" by Richard Schwartz is a must but when explaining to clients the illustrated tools are very useful.

Query for other folks who both are autistic & have ADHD:

What has been your experience with focus & executive function compared to folks who solely have ADHD? :NeurodiversitySymbol:

Bonus question: if you've found medication helpful, which type & amount are on (if you feel happy to disclose)? :BlahajHoldingNeurodivergentSymbol:

Boosts welcomed :BoostsOKPrideSymbol:

For those in research or innovation spaces, (including open source),

What is your method for assigning tasks, of different priority and involvement levels.

How do you differentiate between presenting volunteer/open that have one set of quality standards, vs other quality standards for different tasks-roles-responsibilities?

post?
I'm Dan.
I don't generally do social media.
And yet here I am.
Trying out this Fedi thing,
excited to have a space where I can just be myself.

I'm recently self diagnosed , , , & officially (39yo, better late than never!)

It's been so enlightening to finally start learning and embracing who I really am.

Meeting other autistic people has been amazing and is helping me feel less alone.

So um hi 🙂

"People who go to therapy aren't inherently better than those who don't
Go to therapy’ is the new ‘just pull yourself up by your bootstraps’ or ‘why don’t you just work harder’..it stems from the oppressive foundations & glorification of therapy itself. Most importantly, this hyper-fixation on therapy leads to more collectivist, sustainable, transformative, community-based approaches being overlooked." #therapy

I agree. On both counts. So often if basic survival needs were to stabilize, so many mental health crises would calm/be prevented.

Don’t be edgy.

Edgy is being passive-aggressive.

Being passive-aggressive is an NT communication style, not an autistic one.

Some autistic people internalize this as part of their masks.

If you want to be passive-aggressive, just be “aggressive” and say what you want. Be you. Don’t sugar coat.

#ActuallyAutistic @actuallyautistics @actuallyautistic

PsychTink,

@theautisticcoach @fishidwardrobe @actuallyautistic

In my understanding, passive aggressive communication is usually used by NT people that feel powerless. They have some resentment about this powerlessness but lack a sense of safety or confidence to speak their truth, so they shroud it in sarcasm or passive aggressiveness.

Being edgy, in my understanding is more about appearing cool, witty, funny, & getting approval from a group. It's waving their "personality" for status or recognition.
