I’m rewatching Elementary and I’m on season 4 where they introduce the autistic character Fiona Helbron. While I like some aspects about the character, I don’t like the trope that it is impossible for an autistic person to tell a lie. I’m lying. @actuallyautistic

I have a number of question for people who report :

Do you daydream at all, and if you do, how does that work without visuals?

How does your memory work in general? Assuming you remember seeing things, being in places, meeting people, how does that work?

When you need to describe the appearance of something, how do you go about doing that? Do you plan ahead and memorize lists of features while the thing is in front of you?

Thanks! I’m trying to wrap my brain around this phenomenon I can’t experience myself so if you take some time to educate me I’ll be forever grateful.

No, I don't daydream, and I don't remember dreams. I remember very few past events because of SDAM. Those that I do remember, I just recall facts about them, nothing else.

Why do you need a label?

"Because there is comfort in knowing you are a normal zebra, not a strange horse. Because you can't find community with other zebras if you don't know you belong. And because it is impossible for a zebra to be happy or healthy spending its life feeling like a failed horse.”

q: @omgimautisticaf

Learning the “why” didn’t change me, but finding a community of others like me who I can share things with and learn from has been helpful.

Autistic people can be "othered" and discriminated against in many ways. Take the story of Payton Gibbs, a 12-year-old autistic girl who was suddenly banned from the sidelines at football games for "reasons".

Autistic people may be dealing with many other issues, dubbed comorbidities by the medical community. I've listed some of them in the mind map below. Many can’t be seen by others.

@actuallyautistic

Many things that may seem trivial to others might not be so for an autistic person.

Going to the grocery store can be incredibly stressful navigating the many people, sounds, lights, smells and decisions. It can be overwhelming.

Autism and Sensory Issues:

Our microwave oven is a sensory nightmare for me. I always try to stop it before it reaches zero and begins beeping. I get extremely anxious over this.

What do you avoid?

Autistic love languages can look different than NT ones. We like to share experiences, may unmask around people we are comfortable with, do penguin pebbling, share a special interest, stim, or infodump.

  • Autistic traits are just human traits.
  • All traits lie on a spectrum
  • Every autistic person is different

Think of the spectrum as an audio mixer with sliders set to different levels. Autistic people may have sliders all the way on or off.

It is often hard for me to switch tasks. Especially when I get into a hyperfocus state. 🧘

I've always struggled to explain to others why it is so difficult. 🤔

“Tendril theory" by Erin Human explains it really well.

🎬 Excited to unveil https://autisminthemedia.com! Dive into the history of autism representation in film & TV. From overlooked stories to genuine portrayals, let's celebrate and advocate for the diverse and authentic voices of the autistic community.

Some autistic people rely on rehearsed scripts they have memorized to use in certain social situations. They may have learned what to say from observing others, or perhaps from tv shows and film.

Not knowing what to say or do creates a lot of anxiety for us.

A 🧵: How much are you worth?

@actuallyautistic

1/3 If you or a family member are disabled and you intend to migrate to Australia, think again. The Australian Migration Act is exempt from their Disability Discrimination Act, visas are getting rejected.

Here's proof:

https://ab.co/3PCnriV

autism101,

2/3 But...why? Because you or your loved one will be an undue burden on them you see. The cost for you to use their health services and to go to school is too much.

As @ajesusjoseph points out, "migration has always been a disability justice issue."

https://bit.ly/3ZktHit

@actuallyautistic

autism101,

3/3 Don't be fooled, it isn't just Australia who does this, many other countries like Canada do the same thing and have for years.

It doesn't matter to them that disabled people's life expectancy on average is way shorter.

I tend to avoid social media. I don't even really know how to use it; but when I'm on here, I see that whole "community" thing that I'm not very familiar with.
Like people getting support when they're down and all that.
Sometimes I try to imagine
myself getting that.

"You are a great person."
"You are worthy of love."
etc.

But if it were me, I know it would just feel empty. How could any of you possibly know me?

This can't be just me, right?

You aren’t alone in your perspective. There are of course levels of knowing someone else, and spending time chatting with someone online and reading their thoughts and communications is such a level.

“Know thyself” is the beginning of wisdom according to the Oracle of Delphi which is hard enough. To truly know another person seems impossible to me.

Autistic people can sometimes be criticized for being too blunt or rude. Many of us use direct communication with no filters.

We say what we are thinking, and mean it.

If we see an emperor with no clothes walk by, we will point it out to you.

@actuallyautistic

I have trouble understanding and identifying my own emotions. Alexithymia is common amongst autistic people.

I will often display an emotion that I see others doing in order to “pass”.

You can make phone calls without talking using real-time text (RTT). It sends text messages immediately as you type them, without requiring you to hit send. You can enable it under Accessibility settings.

The autistic community is vastly underemployed, and even if you are fortunate enough to find work, there be dragons.

Disclosing your disability doesn’t always end well. Instead of getting reasonable accommodations, you might get let go…for “reasons”.

Interesting Monotropism questionnaire, link below.

I hope the topic gets more research.

Monotropism is a theory of autism developed by autistic people, initially by Dinah Murray and Wenn Lawson.

https://monotropism.org

“Monotropism Score: 231 / 235
Average: 4.91

This score means that you are more Monotropic than about 99% of autistic people and about 100% of allistic people.”

Most of the time when asked “How are you doing?” I actually tell them, because I forget I’m supposed to always say, “I’m fine” even if I’m not.

Do you?

I’m barefoot most of the time. If I need more protection I wear my flip flops.
