Synthwave is actually a fairly new music genre that is inspired/nostalgic from the 80’s horror films and synth tunes of the time. Go pay a visite de the small community we have here on de fediverse !synthwave !

Someone has watch Solar Opposites recently.

synapse1278,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

It’s a cartoon on Hulu, sharing similarities with Rick & Morty, art style, dark humor, athough they remain quite different (you may hate R&M and still enjoy Solar Opposites). I like it a lot. In the latest season, 2 of the main characters become invisible, and as a side effect they are also blind, because the light passes straight through their eyeballs without interaction.

In the office they have a spray attached to the wall of each stall, you can use some toilet paper to clean the toilet seat with some spray. That’s great. It’s the only reason I still go there.

I played the hell lot of KF starting back when it was a mod of Unreal Tournament 2004. I have very good memories of LAN parties playing it all night long. But by the time KF2 came to be, I had moved on to other things.

The moment when the big triangle bloc tips over and all the snow splatters on the ground. Soooo satisfying.

Kdenlive is very straight forward for simple editing, and the documentation is quite good when in need for more advanced stuff. I recommend for hobby purpose.

I'm worried that in the future we will be forced to use smartphones just like in China

In China, you can’t exist without a smartphone, because for all existential things you have to do (paying bills, buying tickets etc.) , you are forced to use the almighty wechat app. Smartphones are a tool to manipulate and to spy on the population. It is a tool utilized by the ruling class, to control the masses. I hate the...

I was visiting Berlin last week. So many pubs are cashless now. And so many more cafés have this infuriating QR code menu-card. Meanwhile in Stuttgart, many reataurants are cash-only, which is almost as annoying.

Do you have some guides to share regarding local redirect ? I have some troubles accessing my services from my phone when I am at home and it forces me to turn on the VPN, I couldn’t fine a solution so far…

synapse1278,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, I see. I have Pihole setup as a local DNS, but this works only partially, because my ISP router sucks and I have no control over it… basically, it works perfectly for wired connections, buy devices connected via WiFi will more often than not bypass Pihole and get a DNS server directly from the router (via IPv6).

synapse1278,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, that’s right. My ISP offers another router providing more complete control, for more money of course.

Just curious, is 24GB of RAM in a smartphone useful for anything?

I just started using Linux... any great tips?

I just installed Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS (Cinnamon) on an empty laptop a couple days ago and have been experimenting a lot. I’m coming from being a Windows user since I was just a little kid playing old DOS games on my grandpa’s Win-98 PC back in around 2000. My daily driver is currently running Windows 10 but I am pretty adamant...

Probably already mentioned in other comments, buy it can’t be stressed enough: Backups !

Part of learning to use Linux is breaking it. You will make mistakes that will bork your computer. You can either spend hours to try to fix it, or you can wipe everything clean, reinstall, restore from your latest backup, and be done like nothing happend in no time. (Maybe you want to go the hard way for learning, but it’s always more relaxing to know you also have the easy option at your disposal)

Ubuntu comes with Timeshift, make use of it. Also plan to make backups to external storage or NAS, in case things go real bad.

GrapheneOS will fit your bill. I am using it on my Pixel 7. With the sandboxed google services installed, there is only few apps that do not work (most notably Android Auto). I didn’t face any problem with banking apps.

Installing GrapheneOS is super easy, but you will have to install Chromium webbrowser on your computer.

Once installed, I like to get my apps from F-droid (FOSS app store) and I go to Google Playstore only if I can’t find what I need from F-droid. There is also Aurora-store that is a sort of proxy for playstore that doesn’t requie you to login with a google account, buy I’ve never use it myself.

If apps are not behaving properly, they probably require more permission, and if those depends on the google services you must check the permissions for it as well. One example Google maps was not calculating routes properly until i grant google services the location and sensors access.

TIL why tech companies are giving away rubber ducks in job-fairs.

People who back into parking spots: Why?

To me, it seems objectively easier to pull into a parking space forward and then back out of the space when you are ready to leave. You don’t have to line up with the lines while driving backwards, and it’s easier to keep from hitting other cars as well. So why back in? To me, the only advantage I can think of is that you...

That soons like a good gig. But i am curious, how much of this extra 50k is left after you factor in health insurance and other utilities? I heard health insurance is expensive is the USA, but i actually have no clue how much it is.

Oh yeah, it’s not so expensive.

It’s not that temporary, electrifying tracks can take decades. In Germany, many smaller towns are connected with routes that are only partially electrified, such a hybrid concept would allow the trains to run electric most of the time and only use the diesel engine on the most remote part of the journey. This is much better than not having a train access at all, where you would have to drive a car instead.

Ping Pong table ? Are they serious ?!? We had a PS5 in the meeting room for ~4 month an no one ever touched it. I don’t go to work to have a fun time, I go to do my job, then leave and have a fun somewhere else. More correct answers for retaining employees:

  • give them tasks they are interested in
  • give them perspective for developement (promotions, raise, mobility, etc)
  • value their contributions and support them moraly (you want to know your managers and colleages got your back)
  • of course more money ! Or alternatively more freetime !

I enjoyed this episode. Although, as a non-american I don’t fully understand the reference to the honey candy. Is it just that it is very sticky?

synapse1278,
@synapse1278@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, some FOSS apps are very good exemples of polished and effective UI design. An example that comes to my mind is Jellyfin, it is prettier, more reaponsive and way less buggy than Amazon Prime or Netflix (my experience on nvidia shield).

You mix a little bit 2 things, here is what I do:

Security:

  1. Use a password manager for unique and strong passwords for every account
  2. Use 2FA (excluding SMS!) whenever possible
  3. Be mindful of what I install on my computers and phones, do not install from untrusted sources, don’t open suspicious links and attachments
  4. Turn OFF face-unlock on all devices

Privacy:

  1. Different usernames on every platform
  2. Firefox for web-browsing (with unlock origin)
  3. Signal for all encrypted messaging
  4. Use my self-hosted VPN for connecting on public/untrusted WiFi
  5. Linux on all my computers
  6. GrapheneOS on all my phone’s
  7. Pihole and Unbound as network level adblocker and recursive DNS resolver

As a conclusion, you don’t need to do nearly as much as me (some do much much more than me) but every step is helping. I feel like I have achieved a reasonable confort/security+privacy ratio with my measures.

Why did I switch to Linux ? I pushed Windows XP as far as it could go (skipped Vista altogether), and after that I became so frustrated with Windows 7 being so bad that I switched to Linux and never looked back since.
