Signal works. The adoption is fairly slow, but I’ve had friends slowly begin to use it.

I hate how tipping is now customary at every single restaurant now, including places without servers.

Yeah, title should just be:

My older brother got me into Ubuntu when I was around 12. He basically showed me the basics, like the terminal and a couple commands, then just told me to manpage or Google everything else.

Then I got Linux for the Wii and that really got me into the nitty gritties of Linux.

I don’t think it’s very useful at generating good code or answering anything about most libraries, but I’ve found it to be helpful answering specific JS/TS questions.

The MDN version is also pretty great too. I’ve never done a Firefox extension before and MDN Plus was surprisingly helpful at explaining the limitations on mobile. Only downside is it’s limited to 5 free prompts/day.

Is there any way to reverse degrowth of the niche communities on Lemmy?

Like others, I came over when Reddit was banning 3rd party apps. Many communities were being started and I wanted to help. So I chose one community to form here and try and grow. And we did! There was a time a short while in the little KC Chiefs community was in the top 100 communities on Lemmy world. I knew that wouldn’t last...

Here’s some things Lemmy could potentially implement:

@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

If you had really slow Internet, like smoke signals or semaphores across a nation, you could characterize it as millibit:

1 bit over 1000 seconds = 1 millibit/s.

But yeah, it’s basically meaningless in today’s age for Internet speeds.

I’ve had Ziply Fiber before (but not 50 Gbps) and would max their upload for months and they didn’t even bat an eye. It’s the only ISP that I would ever recommend.

poopsmith,

I remember in 2013 building software for HMIs running WinCE and back then, it was horribly outdated and a trudge to work on. I can’t imagine how bad it would be today.

It was just a dock, so not terribly expensive but expensive enough to hurt if it got lost.

Scihub for most things. You can also sometimes find preprints (or contact the authors) on RG.

I’ve always found it’s easier to use Stack Overflow or Google than a man page.

In college, I used to drink Starbucks’ Via. That instant coffee hits different.

Nowadays, I make either an espresso or a pour over. But I still crave Vias sometimes.

If you’re not in school and just teaching yourself the material, get a better textbook. There are plenty of exceptional textbooks in physics on libgen. If it’s for a specific subject, I can probably recommend you a textbook.

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Not really. I’ve lived here for ~30 years and certain spots are better, some are worse.

poopsmith,

Caffeine pills! You can find them for cheap at most drug stores. Plus you can dose the exact amount you want.

I’ve been using Ubuntu 20.04/22.04 daily for years now without any Snap issues. I haven’t once had any problems and I have 20 snaps installed.

poopsmith, (edited )
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Community support is great. I can search up any problem and instantly find good results, which is not always true for other distros. I use it mostly at work and I want to minimize the time I spend fixing things. Plus, most programs will have out-of-box support (binaries, tests, install instructions, etc) for Ubuntu.

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Yep, but that’s a problem with all package managers where users can publish their own code without auditing. Every app store has these problems. Both npm and pip have these issues too.

People shouldn’t install unvetted binaries from random people. I wouldn’t install random binaries that I’ve downloaded through a web browser—why would installing through snap be any different?

OP finds vulnerability where a forum sends you your password in plaintext over email and everyone misses the forest for the trees (lemmy.world)

This thread is frustrating. Everyone seems more interested in nitpicking the specifics of what OP is saying and are ignoring that a forum sends you your password (not an automatically generated one) in an email on registration.

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

People weren’t really nitpicking.

  • it’s obviously bad to send an email with a plaintext password
  • the website owners had apparently already resolved the issue
  • it does not mean the passwords were stored in plaintext
  • the OP sounds like a skiddie in a bunch of comments and doesn’t seem to understand how most websites with auth work
poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

But in situations like this there is a much larger chance it’s being stored in plain text.

I suppose, but OP said in the title that the passwords were being stored in plaintext, despite that not being the case.

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Not sure what you mean here, this is what the forum post said:

After emailing (admittedly not current best practice), the passwords are hashed and only the hash is stored.

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe I’m misunderstanding you, but backend servers will almost always have the user-submitted password in plaintext as a variable, accessible to the backend server and any upstream proxies.

It’s even how it’s done in Lemmy. The bcrypt verify accepts the plaintext password and the expected salted hash.

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, but SSL/TLS also solves that problem in a standardized way.

In either case, the backend will have the plaintext password regardless of how it’s transmitted.

What using urinals offer:

  • don’t need to close a door
  • don’t need to touch the seat to lift/lower it
  • takes up much less space than toilets
  • can chat with the bros

There is much less splash using a urinal than standing at a toilet. You’re doing something very wrong if it’s splashing all over the place (how tf?).

Wisest Upgrade from Raspberry Pi (artemis.camp)

I am several months into the self-hosting journey and I feel I have outgrown my Pi 4 B 8GB. I'm only running around 3 dozen containerized services and it seems to struggle to keep up. But I'm not sure of the best bang for my buck. I'd like good, long-term performance, but I don't really have a grand lying around for a Lenovo...

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

I got a free computer and upgraded the processor to an i7-6700T (eBay) and some old SSDs. It measured around 15W and I haven’t had any problems with it. It is miles ahead of using any Pi or ARM-based SBC. I would really recommend just finding a used computer nearby, if possible. Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace has some killer deals.

'One Chip Challenge' pulled from shelves after mother says spicy tortilla chip contributed to her son's death (www.nbcnews.com)

You don’t eat this chip because it’s good, you eat it because it’s one of the spiciest things you can get (and it’s fun).

My sister, who did her master’s in nutrition or some related field, says multivitamins are a waste of money. She suggests getting bloodwork and seeing if you’re deficient in anything. And if you’re deficient, it’s better to change your diet than buy multivitamins (if possible).

With that being said, I still take a multivitamin…

For cleaning out the connector, I get a piece of flat clamshell packaging, cut it into a V shape, then use that to carefully scrape out the gunk in the connector. It really helps if you have a stereo microscope or even a loupe, but isn’t required.

poopsmith,

If you’re on a really steep incline, you’ll have to press both the brake and gas pedal at the same time using your right foot, while feathering the clutch with your left. I’ve heard this called the “heel toe” technique.

If your engine has enough torque or if the hill isn’t steep enough, you can ignore this and just ease off the clutch while transitioning from the brake to gas.

poopsmith,
@poopsmith@lemmy.world avatar

Yep. I also used it a lot when starting on a hill on vehicles without handbrakes.
