From a privacy standpoint, i guess. I want to support open scrobbling with listenbrainz and the account isn’t directly linked to a real acc. Why shouldn’t I/ why don’t you?
I’ve been thinking about getting an e-reader (thinking kobo or boox) and wanted to know if it’s possible to remove unwanted stuff (like the play store) using adb? I plan on just downloading .epub files from annas-archive and ao3, so it would be good if firefox or mull can be installed via .apk.
How have others gotten friends/family to make the switch? I’ve been doing a cleanup of my digital life over the last year or so and am trying to move to using more privacy friendly alternatives where possible....
The only reason I got Signal to catch on with friends & family was that it made group chats between Android and iPhone just work for everybody. Although if they had already been using Whatsapp it may have been a harder sell. But Signal was easy to use to figure out.
I would love to only use the computer in tty but would be hard to edit images in GIMP. Or do you still launch GUI apps directly from tty? Most websites are an abomination viewed through lynx or similar.
I’ve listened to every single episode of his podcast for years, bought his books, and honestly his material was kinda life changing for me. Went from using Facebook and Apple ID everything to using Graphene OS, Linux, got friends and family using Signal, masked cards, VOIP numbers, etc. I’m sad to see it go but I understand sometimes it’s time for new chapters in life and wish him well. Maybe one day someone else on staff can create some new episodes.
Wow. I’ve been self hosting wallabag for articles and Nextcloud News for RSS. But I see Omnivore does both in one app and looks more polished! I’m going to try it.
My phone is no longer getting updates, so it’s time to buy a new one. The hardware could easily last 1-2 more years but I’d have to replace the battery, which is a pain on my phone....
I want this. I switched from using iPhone my entire life to GrapheneOS. Now that I’ve come to appreciate Android I’m amazed at the wide variety of Android phones to choose from but I’m stuck to Pixels because that’s the only option for GrapheneOS currently.
I am soon moving out for university and am going to meet a bunch of new folks. But I was wondering how do you go about approaching this with privacy in mind?...
I don’t do anything special, as far as they know. I give them my phone number - but it is a VOIP number I use for family and friends only. I don’t use it with any accounts or sign-ups anywhere so I don’t care that the number gets out. I also mostly just text to plan a meet up in person. I don’t text juicy conversations. For closer friends, I got lucky and we’ve migrated to Signal.
If top of the society is immoral psychopaths with power, and most of the society is composed of people with good intentions, then there is not much hope for “beta uprising” until things go way beyond point of recovery, because powerful psychopaths will not let their power get taken away....
I think the best anyone can do is try to make life as good as possible in their mini sphere of influence, their personal bubble of friends and relationships. If everyone did that, society would be better. I’m not sure what to do about psychopaths in power. Maybe deal with the psychopaths in your personal world or aim to reduce your own personal behavior that’s harmful to others?
Honestly the lack of ad blockers in Vanadium pushes me towards Firefox even though the devs say that Firefox is far less secure. So many web sites are just hard to use on mobile without an ad blocker so I’m curious what the rest of you are doing.
I use Vanadium with a custom DNS in system settings - NextDNS. It doesn’t get rid of every ad but it’s pretty good and blocks nearly all of them. You can choose adblock filter lists as well with NextDNS.

Not sure how paying for an item online using Zelle is in itself a scam. The scam would only come later if the stranger had requested your bank info, or you reply to a dodgy email, etc, but so far nothing untrustworthy had happened yet? I don’t think that was a good question.
You can disable network permissions for individual apps, which means no ads. Those spammy games that have a million ads suddenly are ad-free, no cracks or pirating needed.
I’m trying to install Proxmox on a server that is going to be running Home Assistant, a security camera NVR setup and other sensitive data, I need to have the drives be encrypted with automatic decryption of drives so the VMs can automatically resume after a power failure....
I like learning about this stuff too. I’m curious what is the point of encrypting a hard drive if it just automatically decrypts on boot? If someone stole your computer couldn’t they could just boot it up and have an unencrypted drive?
I’ve found OnlyOffice (not to be confused with OpenOffice) is very compatible with Microsoft’s Office document format. I can open and edit docx files created by other people with no problem.
Pixelmator for macOS blows GIMP out of the water and is a one-time purchase of $50. I’ve used Photoshop a lot at school and Pixelmator does 99% the same.

You could occasionally post or comment with innacurate personal details such as living in a different city or having a pet or interest you don’t actually have. In addition to the other advice in these comments.
How authentic are forums like these actually? With the rise of AI chatbots, internet interaction feels more fake than ever before. Why should I post here my opinions and thoughts, share articles etc. when probably most of you are just chatbots?
Just out of curiosity. I have no moral stance on it, if a tool works for you I’m definitely not judging anyone for using it. Do whatever you can to get your work done!
