that’s such a great reason to do a sequel because it sounds like people would love it and maybe they can negotiate a better percentage and make some money back!

Yet another approach on Threads (Jerry Bell) (infosec.exchange)

I continue to be squeezed by both sides of the threads situation. I am operating on the premise that people who think I’m a terrible person and this is a terrible instance for allowing any interaction with threads have left and/or blocked, those remaining seem to want to either have nothing to do with threads at all and are...

they can already download what people are sharing. that’s not what this is about.

if they want to train AIs on your data they can scrap it from the regular feed without any integration. If they needed federation to do it they could just set up a mastodon instance to grab the data - but they don’t.

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

if they run a mastodon instance, you’d be federating with them just as much.

are you sure these comments are somehow protected by copyright and they can’t use them? when I post publicly like this I have no expectation of control over use.I’d be very surprised if I could somehow sue a company using this comment to train AIs.

I’d also be surprised if that status changed somehow if the server was then connected to threads?

I can’t find anything like what you’re describing - my instance has a legal notice which is just a disclaimer saying they can’t be held liable, lemmy.world has a fair use and terms of service which are 404s and their privacy policy just says they won’t sell your data (but might use it for internal research) - can you tell me what you mean?

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

well, my dog certainly hates that! I think about 13k in my right ear but it almost seems like it’s more than one tone?

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

why does everyone on Lemmy whinge about everything. you’re welcome to not watch the content.

I have a plugin for my browser that summarises youtube transcripts with chatgpt, you might find that more to your taste.

I think the working title was “Glasgow simulator”

Any advice for babysitting a toddler for 6 hours-ish?

Good friends of mine would like a reprieve so they can have their anniversary dinner. I’ve been a camp counsellor and was pretty good at it but those kids were all 6 years old, this one is 13 months old. Adorable kid but I figure maybe some folks here might have good ideas/thoughts/suggestions/crass jokes?

in a world with dwindling resources people are satisfied with something they already own. sounds wonderful.

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

plus just means more I think, they’re adding to their service so it’s “plus”

just because that’s usually a hook to get you to pay more doesn’t mean that’s now the definition of the word

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

cheap for what you get

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

yeah they didn’t say they were removing the start menu, they just said the new feature will be as central to the user experience. and predictably every reply is “lol STUPID MICRO$HIT”

people really want something to be mad about

Eliyahu also voices his objection during the interview to allowing any humanitarian aid into Gaza, saying “we wouldn’t hand the Nazis humanitarian aid,”

you are the Nazis at this point mate.

yeah the issue honestly is how much someone else has to read to understand your code. it’s weird because the whole article is about making readable code for the next person and he never stops to address the fact that leaving 10x as much code to read might also make life more difficult.

I feel like he just wanted to make a point about how it’s nice to make types immutable and suggest other techniques can be worth implementing too, which I agree with, but honestly his premise is a trainwreck.

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

I’m happy people are sharing stuff to Lemmy, it’s been a little quiet.

I definitely value the Forbes article over the MSN but we might not be talking about it if we hadn’t seen this post. let’s not be too critical when people are participating positively.

I wonder if this assumes the cracker knows how long etc the password is when they start cracking.

I always make my passwords “a” because I figure they’ll start cracking attempts at 5 characters 😁

great episode. I honestly think of it often.

I think it’s just a Hollywood cliche with enough truth it plays out in the real world here and there. a lot of the show was a commentary on LA culture and how it’ll swallow people.

there are a lot of parallels here but I’m sure it’s a coincidence, but it shows how right the series got it.

that show really hit me. I feel really bad for Matthew Perry, I didn’t know anything about his struggles until now and it’s really sad. the world really eats some people alive.

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

I think it was the most honest portrayal of mental illness in a show I’ve ever seen. not judgy about shit either and didn’t make it the only defining feature of a character. the writing was excellent.

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

I actually really like this. 17 is three less than 20, 20x3 is 60, 3x3 is 9, 51 is 60-9. It just feels nice how it all fits together.

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

that’s literally the whole point of this?

the point of this is a new youtube is unlikely to take off because people can’t start using it without missing all their regular content.

this means you can keep all your regular content and add new sources, with the same creators, which means they can start to move to new platforms and take their followers. that’s how we’ll replace youtube.

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

I did that once when I moved from one DB IDE to another and didn’t realise the new one only ran the highlighted part of the query.

there were thousands of medical students going through a long process to find placements with doctors and we had a database and custom state machine to move them through the stages of application and approval.

a bug meant a student had been moved to the wrong state. so I used a snippet of SQL to reset that one student, and as a nervous habit highlighted parts of the query as I reread them to be sure it was correct.

then hit run with the first half highlighted, without the where clause, so everyone in the entire database got moved to the wrong fucking state.

we had 24 hourly backups but I did it late in the evening, and because it was a couple of days before the hard deadline for the students to get their placements done hundreds of students had been updating information that day.

I spent until 4am the next day working out ways to imply what state everyone was in by which other fields had been updated to what, and incidentally found the original bug in the process 😒

anyway, I hope you feel better soon buddy. it sucks but it happens, and not just to you. good luck.

I’m not blaming the people at the rave but the policy of Israel.

Hamas is a terrorist organisation and awful, but they wouldn’t have the numbers or the motivation without Israel’s actions.

They’re both bad, what just happened is unforgivable, but we can’t just start turning a blind eye to Israel - they aren’t the good guys. They’re talking about cutting off water supply for millions of people in a desert as retaliation. That’s really scary escalation.

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

Youtube lets you monetize videos - I’d assume you can make more (and earn a living) more easily there than via an alternative. I agree they should be looking at alternatives but until they can earn a living there I doubt much will change.

When I was about 15 I woke up at about 4am, super distressed, and I knew someone had died. I didn’t want to go look so I just hoped it wasn’t my mother or father, shamefully I thought it would be better if it was a grandparent. There was a lot of going over possibilities and mental bargaining.

Eventually I calmed down and realised it was irrational and finally got back to sleep, the following day I found out it was a close friend of my mother’s. She’d killed herself. I don’t understand what happened, I don’t really believe in the supernatural but it was very strange.

government policy will be primarily set by a peer validated group of experts in their fields. funding will be dictated by a multidisciplinary team that assesses need through funding requests by the expert bodies with accompanying impact assessments. that will dictate taxes and so on.

elections will be performative and meaningless as you lot have absolutely shown you can’t be trusted but also need to feel heard or you’ll break things you don’t understand.

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

good call. just well paid, expert professionals without a vested interest doing a job they are qualified to do, and being reviewed by people qualified to understand their performance.

dbilitated,
@dbilitated@aussie.zone avatar

currently governments fund and slash funding to all sorts of things according to political convenience… I just want to see all those decisions validated entirely on merit by someone who understands it.

if it’s popular with the mob but it’s not true or doesn’t work, well, we don’t do it. president isn’t an expert and can’t say shit, and especially can’t do stupid things so he can sound tough in a media release. we can’t afford to keep dicking around with whatever sounds good to win popular support with the lowest common denominator while the world goes to shit.

the world is far beyond the level of complexity where any one person could understand enough to make off the cuff, meaningful decisions about big issues. people need to stop thinking they can vote sensibly on policy or policy performance on almost any issue, let alone all the issues.

use it for home assistant. I’m astonished because my test install from years ago on a pi that’s around 7 years old is going with no intervention aside from updates. it’s crazy robust.

for a while my laptop was slow and I needed a test local environment rebuilding with webpack so I set up a newer pi that ran the Dev servers so my laptop didn’t choke. I’ve got a better laptop now.
