Ringu - scares me every time I see it.

Many of David Lynch’s films too, although none are out and out horror. They almost all have moments though - Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire, Fire Walk With Me, Blue Velvet. Really insidious moments that just won’t leave you.

Blair Witch Project - many people would disagree, but I think it’s a masterpiece of fear.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Not sure if this counts, but I’ll nominate Unidan.

@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Here’s the thing…

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

I think if everyone has had a good time and it’s been a good atmosphere, it can be a fun way to round it off.

Eg I saw the South Park movie in the cinema, and the place was just rocking that night. Mostly a student crowd I think, very raucous laughter, almost more like a gig than a screening. The applause was huge, and it was only partly for the movie itself.

I’ve been to a few where it’s been like that (not quite like that, but not far off) and it’s always felt appropriate.

Other times I’ve seen it happen, and it’s been a bit weird, but I don’t mind it. I think it’s great that people enjoyed their experience enough to be pumped up enough to show it.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Seen it quite a few times in the UK, mostly with quite studenty audiences though (see my comment elsewhere re the South Park movie).

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been to a few premières through a past job, so I don’t count those, nor ones where the filmmakers are present at the screening, as that’s just politeness, but I have seen it sometimes (UK)

Movies where I’ve seen this happen (and it felt right):

  • South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
  • Grosse Pointe Blank
  • Goodfellas
  • The Big Lebowski
  • Stop Making Sense (special open air screening which was set up like a gig - they even had support acts!)
  • Ghostbusters
  • The Room
  • Aliens
  • All three LOTR movies

In most cases these were either screenings with a big student crowd, or retrospective screenings which will always bring out the fans, and the atmosphere was really positive, so the applause felt, like a collective acknowledgement of, “How fucking great was THAT?!”

It’s a bit odd to see it at other times, but if someone has had that good a time at a movie, then great! I’m certainly not going to have a problem with it :-)

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Brilliantly put, and I had basically the exact same experience. I was 13, I think, and I was just blown away by JP.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Hell yeah! That’s one of mine too - when I saw it it was at the Edinburgh Film Festival and they set it up like a concert - open air screening, support acts, a bar and food kiosks in sight of the screen, standing only. It was amazing.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Ghostbusters.

First film I ever saw at the cinema. Loved it then and still do, probably watch it at least twice a year.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Wasn’t it Ford Prefect that said that? To Arthur in the pub near the start of the story.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Seconded (and thirded and fourthed). Dark is superb. Watch in German with English subs though, not dubbed.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is quite fun - some friends discover that a webcam upstairs from them shows the very near future.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Hilda was great fun, I forgot about that one.

It’s very much aimed at kids, but you might enjoy Sarah and Duck, it has some similarities IMO. It’s upbeat and fun, and just a little bit weird, with some strange world logic. And it’s brilliantly narrated by Roger Allam.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

That Christmas episode is a work of art. Such a great show generally, but that one… fucking hell, absolutely blisteringly brilliant.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

A cheap little projector I got using Amazon vouchers from my birthday. Is it perfect? No. Is it still great for watching movies and sport? Absolutely.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry for slow reply, it was the XuanPad Mini Projector Portable, model number 11000L.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Bit late to this, OP, but you might want to check out Jim White, and especially his first album The Mysterious Tale of How I Shouted Wrong Eyed Jesus. It’s not rock exactly, more alt-folk, but it’s definitely Southern and it’s thoughtful, fun stuff.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Cool, hope you enjoy :-)

Not sure if it fits what you’re after but the stories behind a lot of football (soccer) team badges can be quite interesting.

For instance, my own team, Dunfermline Athletic - here’s our badge:

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/c5cece1d-9b8c-44f6-97b5-5c523c2f98c4.png

The building represents Malcolm Canmore’s tower (a local historical site) the curvy line represents a small river or burn running through the town, and the green area at the bottom represents Pittencrief Park, a large public park gifted to the town by Andrew Carnegie (who was born in Dunfermline).

It can also be interpreted as a visual representation of the meaning of the town’s name itself - from Wikipedia:

There have been various interpretations of the name, “Dunfermline”. The first element, “dun” translated from Gaelic, has been accepted as a (fortified) hill, and is assumed to be referring to the rocky outcrop at the site of Malcolm Canmore’s Tower in Pittencrieff Glen (now Pittencrieff Park). The rest of the name is problematic. The second element, the “ferm” may have been an alternative name for the Tower Burn according to a medieval record published in 1455 which, together with the Lyne Burn to the south, suggests the site of a fortification between these two watercourses.

A lot of club badges will have similar historical references if that’s your thing :-)

Love that game. Love, love, love it.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

So many games in here, that I started and apparently need to go back and try again.

Not that I didn’t like them, but with limited time, I just couldn’t get into them properly.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

I think it was a PS Plus monthly game, so “free” in a sense (for a month anyway).

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Colour in almost all of it in black leaving only the shapes of bones, so it looks like a skeleton’s foot.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

If it’s to persuade the alien of the value of humanity, I’d probably go with The Lark Ascending by Vaughn Williams. It’s beautiful, and also 15 minutes long, giving us some time to think of a plan in case they don’t like it.

If it’s just, what’s your favourite song, it’d be So. Central Rain by R.E.M.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, but now you’re down a thumb, so…

Question to those not in the USA, and who have lived outside the USA.

I’ve been thinking about something and want to check an assumption I have. I only hear directly from other people in the USA, and interract with the global community through memes. How are the gun regulations/laws different from yours in terms of strictness, and do you wish there was more or less where you live?...

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

UK. Much, much, MUCH stricter than the US and I’m very glad.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, it’s pretty easy. You just say Eyjafjallajökull.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Though I loved mine at the time… Reebok Pumps.

So dumb.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

But you may have to hang around for a bit.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Was going to say the same, the BBC/HBO Dark Materials series is really excellent, beautifully made.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

I’m a huge David Lynch fan, but yeah, that movie is insane. Has some good moments, but not many!

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Even if nothing comes of it, even if no policy is changed, it’s still important for people to (peacefully) express their opposition to something they disagree with, rather than meekly accept whatever their government does.

This applies to any such protest, not just today’s.

It’s also important that they get out and vote for change when they have a chance.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Remember what Gandalf said.

“You haven’t aged a day”?

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

He immediately tries to put it into a USB slot. Then turns it over and tries again. Then turns it back over and tries again, successfully this time.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

I really like this idea, I think I’d watch it.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Goddamn dude. That sounds amazing!

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

I was going to say Heinz beans, but yeah, the ketchup too.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Oh really? I’d no idea. Yeah, the proper British ones. Pip pip!

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Thankfully, in another 20 years they won’t be melting at all!

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Lovely spot in a gorgeous city. Want to go back!

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

IIRC, Windows key and Up arrow will maximize it. Not aware of a way to snap a window to the top without it changing size. Would be pretty cool.

You might want to check out Windows PowerToys and specifically Fancy Zones. You can create your own areas to snap windows into. Still not quite what you’re looking for but might provide an alternative approach.

What are your thoughts on a user-driven, officially unofficial radio station for Lemmy?

For the past few weeks I’ve been working on creating my own public radio station (it’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid). Well now it’s up and running but I don’t know what to do with it. So I thought I’d see what Lemmy thinks about the concept, before I go all in and start investing in licensing fees, better...

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Seconded, this would be great.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

FYI you can get it to play in VLC using this link: a2.asurahosting.com:7010/radio.mp3

Might work for Rhythmbox too, I’m not sure.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Ah nice one, glad it worked!
