Nowadays I find a lot of games feel like too much work and/or anxiety when I just want to relax for like, 30 minutes to an hour after a long day. On the other hand, the games specifically designed to help you unwind just feel boring imo....

There is no placebo, you can flag stuff out of your builds, so you can have OS without IPv6 anywhere. Or PA support. If you don’t appreciate that, then it’s not for you, but Gentoo does an amazing job of providing freedom with ease of use you can’t find anywhere else.
Sure it takes time to compile, but you just run portage and watch the CPU burn. And if you have enough cores, it doesn’t take all that long.
Also, OpenRC support.
It’s not about the boot times, definitely not about software running faster, everything about having even more control over your computer. Use binary distro if you like, but Gentoo has a place amongst the distros.
Perhaps in the past it was more educational, but nowadays you start with stage3 and everything is so streamlined, that I didn’t learn all that much from installing it.
But when I think about it, those poor people are absolutely fucked right now. By achieving small victories like these they get nothing. We have luxurious lifestyles, while the poorest don’t even eat.
Fuck capitalism. House and feed everyone first, then play pretend with numbers.
It’s an immutable version of stripped Arch, dunno if that counts as ‘slightly restricted’. You can disable the read-only mode if you want to and know what you’re doing.

You don’t need certified Linux hardware to use Linux, and hardware is supported for a really long time once it’s there.
So you don’t have to worry about using latest distros, you should always welcome every update, they fix and add new things (unless it’s Ubuntu, screw them). And if you have new unsupported hardware, it will usually be supported in the next kernel release.
Meaning if you go with usual x86 CPU, Linux won’t have issues with almost anything that comes with it.
My brother in christ, OG Terraria was never this fucking tough to beat. People created new layers of difficulty for bosses, like how is that cheating. It took me about 100 hours to beat that game while duplicating resources, because it was so hard. Even next-class weapons and armor didn’t make late-game bosses easy. But oh boy how great was the feeling of defeating the SCal. That was many years ago, I don’t even know if they added another fuckton of content.
Oh I remember this YT channel that had weekly showcases for Skyrim mods.
Sure, skimpy and booby mods were plenty, but some added better textures, luminescence and shadows, sky details, just everything imaginable.
When Bethesda released the ‘upgraded’ Skyrim, they made a vid of selected mods that for free gave much better visual experience than IIRC $40 ‘re-release’.
And that’s just graphics. Add quests, items, NPCs, areas, everything else you might want.
Are they so different that it’s justified to have so many different distributions? So far I guess that different package manager are the reason that divides the linux community. One may be on KDE and one on GNOME but they can use each other’s packages but usually you are bound to one manager
Also, bit part of Portage (Gentoo “emerge”) is being able to ‘flag out’ parts of the package out (or in) to the compilation.
Let’s say you want to not have telemetry in your packages. So you set ‘-telemetry’ globally, and each package that has known telemetry parts will not compile locally - so it can not be turned on (unless it’s hidden really well).
Or you want to use pulseaudio? You can flag it globally, or for specific packages. That way you can influence software you install without knowing much about anything build-related - the work is done by the repository maintainers.
They won’t be able to pry Gentoo from my cold dead hands. Arch, Nix/Guix can suck it, all my money goes to the Gentoo
Sure, but such optimizations won’t usually matter a lot. I have no hard data on that, but would still prefer having smaller binaries from removing unnecessary BS to having CPU optimizations.
Fortunately I got both ^^ And the system feels a lot more responsive to Ubuntu, but I never ran any benchmarks to prove that.
