lwuy9v5,

Anyone can be anything, they might just be an asshole depending on who they’re giving their support to 🤷

And, a note - everyone is political. There’s no such thing as not being political if you live in a community with other people. Trying to avoid it just means implicitly supporting the status quo, which may mean a lot or may mean nothing.

Peter Thiel is gay man, a leading conservative, and a vile absolute slime of a human being. Absolute piece of shit. Actively using his resources to hurt people.

is there a way to do programming on Chromebook without installing the Linux mode??

if you’ve ever used a Chromebook, you’ll know there’s an option in advanced settings that lets you install a Linux VM so that you can install IDEs, games, etc… I used it to install GIMP, Krita and more. But I don’t want it anymore mainly because it doesn’t sync with your Google account, so what can I do?? I want to...

lwuy9v5,

I like gitpod.io and GitHub codespaces

lwuy9v5,

I feel the same. It’s awesome that there’s a whole community and content. Lovely to see all the smaller communities too

lwuy9v5,
  • OSR = Old School Revival
  • PbtA = Powered by the Apocalypse
  • FitD = Forged in the Dark

I only know the middle one! I’ll check the rest out!

lwuy9v5,

Just start using Signal. Don’t push it for a reason for people who don’t care, just let people know “Hey, message me here”. The more people that use it - the better for everyone - whether they benefit or not.

The second part of that is use things like WhatsApp less or not at all, but you can always start with the first part. Maybe you already have folks on signal, and you can just start messaging them there until more folks come over.

yewtu.be/watch?v=VliJZhEqWzc I’m a robot, beepboop

lwuy9v5,

Oh god, please for the love of god use a spoon and not a knife tip, though

lwuy9v5,

that feels WAY over complicated

People of Lemmy! How to get fit?

Hi guys! For the past… ever, I’ve been putting my health and fitness aside. I tried a few times to get into the habit of exercising to no avail. I’m not overweight or anything but neither am I strong or flexible as I want to be. Mainly because I don’t want to have health troubles later in life. HOWEVER, to get started I...

lwuy9v5,

!fitness

My general advice though - start small, and build up what works for you. Move your body, drink water, try to establish healthy eating habits with all the colors (greens, vegetables, whole grains, etc).

Whatever you do won’t be wrong. It’s always a good thing to do a good thing for your body, whether its big or small or a regime or a once-in-a-while thing.

lwuy9v5,

honestly the “god I don’t wanna do this, but I’m going to do it” feeling has gotten me through more than a few gym days. Do you like podcasts or TV or music? Bring it with you and focus on that.

lwuy9v5,

A beautiful day in Tuscany, you with your love. Nothing could be better. A small child approaches. You hear the sound of a polaroid, and you know what’s coming next. “$10? Photo?” the child says, holding out their hand. You are appalled. The nerve. The audacity. The sheer brazeness. You would never stoop to such a low as analogue film. You hawk back and summon your finest flem, to grace the small child. You spit on the image.

That was the day everything changed…

I hope no one has poisoned their food...

@gaming

lwuy9v5,

This is Kingdom Come: Deliverance? If this is the part I’m thinking of it was such a hard fight! I didn’t even realize you could poison things!

lwuy9v5,

I don’t disagree, but I’m a leftie 🤷 Capitalism doesn’t help most people have agency or a collective voice

lwuy9v5,

God I can’t imagine why anyone would every do that intentionally. What about when you need to update the file…? How do you know which version is served??

5 home appliances that will change your life and allow you to cook tons of gourmet food extremely easily and at a low cost.

I own a Vitamix, a Zojirushi rice cooker, and a Zojirushi Home Bakery Supreme. I also own the instant pot max, and an air fryer by Sur la table. Between these appliances they help me make 90% of my food at home. The food is relatively easy, especially once you get the hang of the recipes, and they taste incredible!...

lwuy9v5,

yea - the vitamix too is like $300. This is probably over $1k worth of kit. Holy shit I didn’t even know they had $300 rice cookers!

They have $10 blenders and $10 rice cookers… they work great… people know that, right? The cheap rice cookers work PERFECT every time and have practically no parts to break

lwuy9v5,

A cheap rice cooker is a great investment. As are cast iron pans if you ever find them at a thrift store or a yard sale.

It’s worthwhile to know that you can make lots of delicious food for cheap with barely any equipment required.

Bread is nice and cheap to make - and you can make a no-knead bread with way less work and some practice.

But OPs post is really insane…

lwuy9v5,

what a wacky person to take a stance like this on, too. Sagan was a bleeding-heart liberal hippie who was all about peace and understanding.

lwuy9v5,

That’s so fucked up that anyone thinks that enablement is a genuine means of reduction here…

lwuy9v5,

I sincerely hope no one has the email [email protected] because ohhhhh boy have they been getting some emails.

lwuy9v5,

Effectively, as an advertiser, you can pay for some info on someone you have the option to show an ad to.

They’ll tell you things like “they are in their 40s and love anime and shopped at target recently”

The worst part is that typically, when you get hyper-specific enough, you can make unidentified info identifiable.

“Male, muslim, just got married, works as a plumber, late 20s, lives in this part of this city, has this device” and then paired with “has this IP” (narrows down to the block or house)

Also the US government buys the same info via shell companies.

How long did you have to wait before retaking your drivers test?

Im pretty confident in driving abilities for taking the test this week with nearly two months of driving with someone else. My only real issue with taking my drivers test is that its my understanding sometimes DMVs have a secret everyone fails once policy, or some instructors do. I’m mainly wondering on average in the US low...

lwuy9v5,

I failed my first time. I panicked and forgot how to parallel park. I think I spent the next month or so practicing and took it again. I don’t think I’ve heard of people failing so frequently - so I’m not sure about that fail policy

Netflix was the only one I ever really had, since the aughts. I am using Jellyfin now 🏴‍☠️ There are easier platforms, though, like popcorn time. A good VPN is a much better investment than some random streaming platform that maybe has 1 or 3 shows I actually care about watching.

lwuy9v5,

Do you think your little one could use something like Popcorn time? Those interfaces are as good as netflix, from my experience

lwuy9v5,

I don’t know why everyone is giving you shit about modifying log files. That support person was an asshole

lwuy9v5,

God this sounds… so absolutely horrible for a place to randomly put LLMs

lwuy9v5,

TraumaZone isn’t really a show - it’s a collection of news coverage from the fall of the Soviet Union. It’s pretty intense. But it’s not a show like House of Cards

has your YouTube consumption decreased after implementing the "no history, no recommendations" feature?

I noticed my consumption has decased quite a bit. I would visit regularly to watch content from few channels. I would probably still visit every so often to watch the new videos. But the experience has become more deliberate and conscious. I go to YouTube because I want to go and watch something specific. Mindlessly browsing and...

lwuy9v5,

I’ve always just watched things that I wanted to watch from followed channels for the most part 🤷

lwuy9v5,

I am using Unraid to run docker, but want to use k3s (again) to turn some old laptops I have lying around into commodity hardware

lwuy9v5,

I feel like it’ll piss off the shitbag more if no one calls it X, so, that’s what I’m going with

lwuy9v5,

I’m still a little sad that both solarpunk and beehaw just straight up didn’t respond to my essays back when there weren’t that many lemmy instances yet.

lwuy9v5,

Yes yes yes yes yes!!! Loved the first one! Cell shaded, good vibes, skate, spraypaint, listen to bomb ass music

People who back into parking spots: Why?

To me, it seems objectively easier to pull into a parking space forward and then back out of the space when you are ready to leave. You don’t have to line up with the lines while driving backwards, and it’s easier to keep from hitting other cars as well. So why back in? To me, the only advantage I can think of is that you...

lwuy9v5,

Listen. Some of us are looking forward. To the Future. The future of pulling out of that parking spot. Not my fault if you stuck in the rear-view, my guy.

It’s called Fancy Parking, sweetie. Look it up 💅

lwuy9v5,

why you gotta drag em like that :(

lwuy9v5,

Fuck yea!!

lwuy9v5,

whoa, cool study. Never heard of this before, but it makes sense. I do still think ADHD brains process dopamine/seratonin differently - maybe that makes more or most things “hygiene factors”, where a neurotypical would have them more as a “motivator”?

The common “oh I accomplished this, but it rather than elation, I just feel relief”, and if you don’t accomplish the stress of it being unmet

lwuy9v5,

There are lots of other marketplace sites (e.g. I was just looking at appliancesconnection.com) - but also generally I either google the name of the thing I’m looking for or look up the name of the seller on amazon and buy it from their site.

lwuy9v5,

For the comments - this is currently referring to their cloud service, Microsoft Azure. But, yea same story as Microsoft ever was

lwuy9v5,

From bulletin board experiences back in the aughts - I don’t know how this wasn’t a similar problem? If it was a recent thread - it got interaction. I think that had the benefit of not having a “front page” so you could see 10 or 20 posts for each sub-forum. Which is similar enough to just going to a subreddit and looking at the most recent posts - but most folks, I think, don’t interact like that with these types of interfaces unless they have a specific thing to look for?

lwuy9v5,

Aw. I’m so excited for there to be some fake “make energy from water vapor” blockchain bullshit company. Then we get to say vaporware as a double entendre.

(I do feel like I vaguely remember something about harvesting energy from humidity? Tiny nanotubes or something?)

lwuy9v5,

You can have a switch such that you use “Shore Power” / the grid when your batteries are low and your batteries when they are full.

For anyone interested: I absolutely do not recommend as a DIY project, hire an electrician. You will kill yourself by stopping your heart or burn your house down. Or both. At the same time.

lwuy9v5,

ah. True. Wasn’t thinking about the modifications required and renting.

lwuy9v5,

It is limited, yes, the pixel you place is one amongst many - you are just one part of the much larger project. That’s the fun part

lwuy9v5,

Maybe a degree of refinement?

  • dust accumulates and becomes dirt. Natural
  • a beaver builds a dam out of nearby fallen logs, natural
  • we create ovens and break down rocks to create bricks and get specific metal alloys to create wires and <many more steps in the middle> and you have the hoover damn. Part of the natural world? Sure. Organic? Mostly (carbon based, sans the metals). Refined? Unquestionably. Natural? Maybe not
