Raspberry Pi 1 B projects?

I have an old Pi hanging around doing nothing. When I originally got it it had the latest Pi OS with desktop loaded and ran like garbage, not surprisingly. So I messed with it headless for a bit, then found RISCOS as an option in Pi imager utility and that is just a neat OS. Fun to play around with for sure. But now I’m...

The original Pi B had a single core 700mhz ARMv6 processor and 512mb of memory. It’s fine for embedded projects using GPIO or a mini LCD screen, but that’s about it. You’d be lucky to even decode 720p video on it as a streaming box.

It might work neat as a monitoring device to keep tabs on the rest of your homelab machines and display a status output or something.

I’ve always used Handbrake for my encoding. IIRC it supports AMD gpu accelerated encode/decode.

@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

Yes. You can tell it to batch encode everything in an entire folder at once if you wish, and it will happily do it.

empireOfLove,
@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

It’s UI based and not as easy to script automatically I suppose. So depending on what you’re trying to run it on, could be annoying. But that’s my 2c. Good luck.

Basically you want a handheld tally counter?

You’d need one for every player and I don’t see any multi-counter units immediately hopping out at me. But they exist.

With the preface of “cheap”, do not ever buy a laptop under $500. They are simply underspecced by the time they get that low, and will give a bad experience.

I would also recommend something like a Lenovo ThinkPad, they are pretty damn tough. Maybe a ThinkPad E14 Gen 5 Intel. Spec it out to 16gb of memory and even the i3 processor will get your job done fine in Linux, while landing in under $650. Plus they have removable M.2 SSD’s that can be changed out for a higher capacity very easily, and much much cheaper than the $300 they charge to kit it with a 1tb drive…

$200 fine for TRYING to touch the wires. If they catch you.

IF you do make it all the way to the wires, it’s a self-solving problem.

How to plan something with someone who doesn't have ADHD?

I have ADHD and my partner does not. When we were planning our wedding it was really difficult because she would do most of the planning (because I wasn’t doing it and someone had to and she loves planning), but when we needed to plan anything together it was like pulling teeth for me. I wanted to help out but it was always so...

empireOfLove, (edited )
@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

My best friend has very severe ADHD, and his partner does not have it.

How they do planning is his non-ADHD partner (who happens to have a very good planning brain) will basically defines a series of questions that only ever address a very small portion of the task at once. So instead of phrasing open ended questions like “What time do you want to go meet Ryan?”, they’ll ask things like “Do you want to meet Ryan at 1pm or 2pm?”. It a very small change but it helps him break down the decision paralysis that ADHD creates.
It doesn’t necessarily address the feeling of letting the other person do all of the planning though- to some degree, that’s going to have to be something your partner is comfortable with, unless you yourself can find ways to break down your own decision making into those tiny bite-size chunks.

Reddit has quite literally been using them since they were first founded. To get the site off the ground, links, votes & engagement was artificially populated for years as the userbase grew. Reddit has never been organic. And anyone who believes reddit ever stopped manipulating those numbers after their “seed phase” to make the site look better is no more than a sweet summer child.

I don’t fault them for seeding content to get a totally blank site off the ground. But spez definitely never stopped manipulating everything that’s followed.

But what happened to the security infrastructure that Israel is so proud of

Sometimes things need to magically “fail” so leaders can get the war that they want, but can’t openly start.

empireOfLove,
@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

The only victims here are both the Israeli and Palestinian citizens, who have more accurately been gangbanged from both sides by the IDF and Hamas.

Nice false equivalency and misinterpretation of my point.

i have had nothing but the most orgasmic experiences with food while high and I can’t even imagine how good in-n-out will be

yeah at the wrong time of day in-n-out turns into a crazy madhouse. some people are obsessive about it.
i mean, i’m obsessive about it, but i ain’t waiting 25min for a burger kinda obsessive.

late night runs always the best tho, it’s usually calmed down by 10pm and that’s the best time to be high anyway

the fuck is all this bullshit? do you even know what you’re talking about?

Most breeds maintained in any number in the US these days, typically angus, herefords, and holsteins, have had any visible horns selectively bred out of them. They’re just too hard to keep otherwise. Yes, those with horns do get them docked if necessary- but if they have them, they’re probably a range breed that are not handled in the kind of close confinement that makes horns unacceptable. All those breeds are just not that common anymore.

Also reminder that Minecraft’s (java) rendering engine is so poorly written that a mod team of 2-3 devs can speed up the entire fucking game by DOUBLE just by writing basic optimizations.

It’s obvious they’ve gradually shifted to cash extraction than actual game building after the Microsft acquisition, coupled with forced data collection via Microsoft accounts, it’s turning into an ugly game tbh.

but if your home is uninhabitable, insurance should pay for any accomodations while you are waiting for your home to be fixed.

Bold of you to assume that any insurance company will keep operating in wildfire interface areas within the next 5 years. They’ve already been cancelling tens of thousands of policies in California over it and it’s coming to your area next.

Reminder that insurance companies are in the business of collecting premiums, not paying out coverage. They will fuck you over at a moment’s notice no matter how long you’ve paid into their system.

Why does the drive thru operator change back and forth during my order?

I just had two people take my order in a drive thru. They alternated every question. First person welcomed me and asked what I wanted. The next person asked what size and drink I wanted. The first person came back on and asked if I wanted any cheese sauce then the second person came back on and told me the price. When I got up...

I always hate the auto greeting and avoid the one McDonalds near me that uses it. 90% of the time it finishes with “we are ready to take your order!” But everyone on the other end is busy because theyre understaffed, and won’t actually take your order if you just blurt it out and then you gotta restart anyway.

As far as security goes, 1 open port and 1000 open ports contain basically the same level of risk exposure to the internet- a hole will always be a hole. If you need to open a few more for rustdesk, just do it, and be diligent about your firewall rules.

I’ve used VNC inside my LAN before with decent results, and it doesn’t break graphics drivers like windows RDP does. However, not FOSS.

Socket erroe? Sound more like your specific VPN is broken and not a soulseek problem. Fix the VPN, change providers, whatever.

Congress is supposed to decide yearly on how and where money gets spent in the federal government budget. If they do not pass the budget before the old one expires, the federal government cannot spend any more money, and it’s operations immediately cease.

The political factions of Congress get into pretty regular spats over how the money is spent, either because not enough is going towards projects certain factions want, or too much is going towards projects that other factions are staunchly opposed to. Sometimes unrelated law bills get tacked to the side that become a point of contention too. With politics becoming more and more polarized, they reach deadlock and can’t agree on the budget, and bam, you get a shutdown.

The same goes for the artificial “debt ceiling” Congress imposed upon themselves that limits how much money the government can borrow from… well, itself, basically. When they hit the cap they also cannot continue spending, so it has to be regularly increased (achieving absolutely nothing)

Either/both sides can and will try to threaten a shutdown as a bargaining chip to get what they want, but it’s so overused at this point that it really doesn’t help much. They still run right to the end, pass some temporary in-situ funding agreements, continue the deadlock, then go back to massive deficit spending at the end of the day anyway.

empireOfLove,
@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

I try to not point fingers… but yes, a solid 90% of the time it’s the conservative faction holding things up.

I’d almost guarantee someone on SoulSeek has some super weird formats in their folders somewhere.

empireOfLove,
@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

Yeah, that’s kind of the problem with soulseek- obscure servers that have the unusual stuff sometimes aren’t online all the time, and there’s often so much stuff on there with poor tagging that filtering thru the chaff can be difficult. Still, it’s basically the best way to find music these days, so it was worth a shot.

Action Cams on Linux (i.e. GoPro, DJI, Canon, etc)

Hi folks. I’ve been running some form of Linux since about 2006 or so. Hardware support has gotten so much better, and yet here I am, looking for personal experiences people have had using action cams with their Linux based operating systems. I’ve done research on this, but most of the info I’ve found is out of date or...

I have a very old GoPro Hero 3 Black. It exposes itself as a MTP device to any Linux install I’ve used and have no problems getting videos off it.

It doesn’t really have any other features than that, other than WiFi viewing which is only available via their android app anyway, so i don’t care.

I use it for car and offroading stuff.

empireOfLove,
@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

It likely will be. The Linux kernel supports a surprising number of devices.

If your camera supports removing the SD card then you have a for-sure guaranteed way of getting data out of it. Built in card readers are typically much faster than USB2.0 anyway, and USB3 universal ones are cheap.

empireOfLove,
@empireOfLove@lemmy.one avatar

Aside from hard science and engineering degrees where the technical knowledge is a foundation for what you’ll learn in industry, a college degree is simply a piece of paper that says “I received a balanced education and have my life together enough to focus, manage time, and complete tasks reliably for 4 years straight.” Rarely do you ever use most of the knowledge you gained in college besides the aforementioned life management skills.
