IIRC the join page is largely automated and simply scrapes active but “small” instances, other than instances that have been asked to be removed from it due to load issues (such as lemmy.world, lemmy.ml, etc). The devs probably don’t even know its up there. Hopefully this gets their attention.

I’m going to preemptively warn my admins about them and ask for defederation though. Don’t need that shit creeping in.

Oh yeah, reddit actively tolerated The_Donald, doing everything they could to keep the sub as active as possible while “limiting” its reach to /r/all and everything else. And on top of maintaining the site traffic, Spez himself is an alt-right racist prepper who thinks he’ll be a slave owner when society collapses, and likely supported half of the shit T_D got up to… Whole site is a fucking mess all the way down to the roots.

Landlords also absorb all the risk if the tenants skip out on two months of rent and leave the unit with no appliances, dog piss stained floors, a body sized hole in the bedroom wall, a toilet that leaked noticably but never reported resulting in extensive water damage, etc.

While its guaranteed that theres a lot of shitty landlords out there, and a ton of price-gouging corporate management companies (who are the real problem these days eith affordability)… I’m fully convinced every user who says “landlords are the devil” are they, themselves, the Tenants from Hell who do not pay the building they live in the tiniest modicum of respect; then wonder why every landlord hates them and hassles them.

Management companies typically take a percentage of the monthly rent (can vary wildly from 8% up to 25%+). This also means they have a vested interest in increasing a building’s rent by the maximum legally allowed amount every single year, because it means they make more without doing additional work.

Yes and no.

They sort of have shareholders in their Board of Trustees whose goals are to see the school grow. They also have shareholders in the form of their upper administration whose goals are usually to increase their own salaries. (Private universities are their own thing and have actual investors and shareholders and don’t really count imo)

Really the problem with (public) universities though is the lack of any market pressure with no regulation to back it up. Student loans are federally guaranteed to never default, which means universities are guaranteed payment as long as students sign up. Incoming freshmen do not have the initial barrier to entry with loans, so their demand has zero response to price increases.Thus universities have zero market incentive to actually reduce any costs or optimize efficiency as a result, because fuck them kids, they’re gonna get paid no matter what. It creates a poor feedback loop where the school’s budget balloons, tuition is raised to make up the difference, students take out more loans, rinse, repeat.

Exactly. No-one can claim the attempts at communist states in the past were “not true communism” as an explanation for why they failed, because all polticial and economic systems are subject to the whims of human nature. If they tried to be communist, and failed because of human nature, then it means their system was not capable of handling and taming human nature, and thus itself is the failure.

I’ll be very surprised if they even make it to an IPO before downsizing and becoming irrelevant. I don’t think Reddit as a company has ever really turned a profit and their major private shareholders have been actively cutting their valuation multiple times. Couple with the spiking interest rates and it’s just about the worst possible time to be IPO’ing.

Because in the words of GabeN, piracy (in a 1st world country at least) is a service problem and not a pricing problem. Many things are worth paying for, especially when you are supporting smaller creators, artists and indie game devs. But when heavy-handed DRM’s and corporate shovelware and services that actively remove content I pay for makes it a shit experience. Yeah, they did kinda suck, but counterpoint: Uncompressed PCM. For a solid 10-12 years they were the best audio quality you could get at the consumer level until computers and portable media players got enough storage and power (and good enought audio cards) to handle high-bitrate MP3 and lossless codecs. Even today they’re still significantly better quality than even most streaming or download services. And no drm…

What are you supposed to do if you download the wrong torrent?

A few days ago I download a movie but the movie was in another language and I’m definitely not going to watch it because of that, I still completed the 1:1 ratio because at the end of the day I downloaded the file and used other people’s bandwidth, but what is one supposed to do in this situation?...

Unless you are on a private tracker that have seed ratio requirements, there is zero obligation to hold onto a torrent until you have a 1:1 ratio. Its only a recommendation, and very much an “Honor Among Thieves” situation.
Feel free to delete the wrong torrent and re-download the right one. If you feel bad about it, keep the right one until a 2:1 ratio so you maintain balance in the world. :)

So, the trap of modern game setups is that there is a lot of super high powered hardware out there- but unless you’re driving 4K monitors at 120hz+, or striving for super fast 360hz+ refresh rates for competitive gaming, you don’t need any of it. And people often get too caught up in the flashy new latest-and-greatest to recognize what’s a good deal and what’s just showing off.

Define your use case. What’s your desirable budget? What kind of games do you want to play, do you want to do VR, what kind of display do you plan on using. Because while it’s easy to drop $2800+ on hardware these days (like I did), it is still very possible to end up with a $900-1k machine that is super capable at 1440p and can run most all games you throw at it for at least another 5 years. Dpending on what exactly you want to do with it, prioritizing certain areas of hardware over others will pay off.

As many public trackers as you can (I usually just start with 1337x. TPB is garbage and shouldn’t be used anymore)

Usually once it’s out on 2 or 3 public trackers for a couple days all the big DHT scrapers pick it up and then she’s free on the wind.

I am glad it works for your tastes, however, I also still reserve the right to say that everyone’s tastes are different and your tastes do not inherently make you superior (as your post seems to feel like). All Im saying is that I have yet to find a “meat replacement” that I actually prefer, and that every bad meat dish I’ve had has only been a result of crap preparation.
