Google maps doesn’t correct shit. I’ve tried multiple times to get a nonexistent road (literally, i took geotagged photos showing this “road” is untouched brushland) that cuts through my parent’s place removed, and they never responded or did anything about it.

It stopped working on any of the sites I ever bothered to use it on anyway- most of them wisened up to the crawler bypass and simply made a 2 sentence tagline visible to crawlers that hit the SEO terms, with everything else hidden. Soooo nothing of value lost and Capital comes to claim its pie once again.

Random thought: Windows is largely successful because of Piracy

Windows as a software package would have never been affordable to individuals or local-level orgs in countries like India and Bangladesh (especially in the 2000’s) that are now powerhouses of IT. Same for many SE Asian, Eastern European, African and LatinoAmerican countries as well....

They still do. There’s so much shit in Windows 10/11that could phone home and shut down your install if you don’t have a valid license, but Microsoft doesn’t actually give a shit if you have a license or not. They just want to make sure you have their botnet installed and not any other OS.

That side of the PSU power cables will be unfused- or at least, fused on the AC supply side of the PSU which will happily set low voltage wires in fire before popping.

Yes you can hook them there, but you MUST add an inline fuse of some form to the fan leads.

You would connect both positive and negative of your fan to the PSU rail, but the positive side to the fan would need the inline fuse.

You can connect it without a fuse, it’s just risky and I discourage doing that.

Those connectors would work for a secondary supply if your laptop charger is 12 volts. Most laptops charge at voltages higher than that though (15 to 20v is typical range) so read the charger spec carefully.

Is there trim in the crease or it is a sharp corner? If there is trim and its not painted clean over, you can cheat and use paperclips. Fold the long leg out straight, so its horizontal, and the short U curl down at a 90, so it forms a hook. If you stick the horizontal wire in behind the trim itll usually wedge in without damaging the trim or paint visibly and hold enough for a cat5e.

If no trim, the sticky hangars are probably the best. Be careful not to buy cheap ones that might fall down, leave residue, or stick too hard and rip the paint off when you go to remove it.

I don’t mind a bit of construction work. Wouldn’t be hard to tear down the drywall in the bathroom and pack the stud walls with Rockwool soundproofing insulation. And also swap the door out for a double-thickness solid core sound-deadening door with a sealing sweep. That’s like a couple weekend’s worth of work max.

Also she is an absolute saint and would probably be fine dealing with it to stay with me.

Regardless of how fast or slow you reversed the direction. Pretty much every weather pattern and ocean current on the surface of the planet would be thrown into a massive calamity. The Corolis effect and momentum imparted to surface fluids around our rotating ball is a huge, huge deal with weather flow, like the “jet stream”. It directs how storm systems (the flow of water that all life depends on) form and track and which typical track they take as the rotation of the earth is constantly deflecting them. There would be huge, unending storm systems as existing patterns now crashed head on into new ones, with storm fronts spanning entire continents. Even after the storms subsided and it settled into a new normal after 20, 30, maybe 50 years… agricultural breadbaskets would be either destroyed, completely inhospitable to their original crops, or stranded in drought. And human civilization would likely fall with them.

Linux Newbie here, can I have some advice on dual booting my windows laptop

I’ve used Windows my whole life, except for a 2006 Mac OS X I got when I was a kid, and I never thought about switching away from it. However, in recent times, I’ve grown to care more about FOSS and customizability, and I’m also a bit more tech-savvy than the average person, I’d say. As such, I’ve of course heard of...

Most distros, at least mainstream ones, will happily install right alongside Windows and give you the option to boot from either Linux or Windows when you start your PC.

Basically, there is a “boot loader” that the motherboard finds on the hard drive when the PC starts up and tells it to load the OS. The bootloader handles getting the OS kernel out of the hard drive and into memory with the correct drivers so the kernel can take over. Windows has its own bootloader that can only boot Windows. Linux also has a boot loader called “GRUB” that can boot multiple operating systems located in different partitions on your hard drive as long as it knows where they are.

You’ll have to first shrink your Windows partition using the Disk Management tool from inside windows so that there is “unused” space on your hard drive not occupied by the Windows file system. Then run your Linux bootable USB and it will take up that space to install Linux. Any normal distro like Ubuntu/Debian/Mint et al. will set up GRUB automatically to recognize both Linus and Windows, and you’ll be off to the races.

However, if you just want to play with Linux before you commit to faffing about in your partition tables, most distros can also run in a “live USB” state where it loads the basics of the OS directly from a USB stick into memory, no installation required. I highly recommend doing this first!

Realistically nobody’s going to expend the legal effort to come after owners of accounts on a site unless it’s very illegal content like CP. however it’s still a very smart idea to compartmentalize snd keep separate email accounts for different services so that it’s both harder to build profile on you, and also less likely to lose All Your Everything if one of the emails is compromised.

I wouldn’t call what reddit is doing “thriving”. The experience of what used to make Reddit, Reddit (the deep focused communities) is already quite decayed and has been decaying for some time.

Curate your Lemmy communities better and make an effort to interact as much as possible. Lemmy always feels super dead if you don’t actively look for new communities and instances to subscribe to, because the Fediverse is inherently in a changing state of flux of where the activity is. Lemmy does not auto populate your feed with a bunch of algorithm crap, you have to MAKE it show you what you want. I’ve built up a nice list of 40+ subbed communities and see lots of content.
