But hey, richest company in the world need to eat ok?

Goodbye Youtube and thanks for all the fish (infosec.pub)

Youtube let the other shoe drop in their end-stage enshittification this week. Last month, they required you to turn on Youtube History to view the feed of youtube videos recommendations. That seems reasonable, so I did it. But I delete my history every 1 week instead of every 3 months. So they don’t get much from my choices....

Any big tech company will both take your money and spy on your activities.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Why are these companies the worst? It’s a honest question since I actually don’t know much about them.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Federation means mastadon messages end up here on Lemmy, and vice versa. So technically… It’s welcome to Lemmy in a way…:)

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

The guy actually never had a good personality even. They had to train him for TV evening shows to even make it work…

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

I’m never closing mine as long as it has active users. Please come if it’s a good location for you - western USA. Performance and uptime is really good but you will have some network latency if you are on the other side of the world.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

:) Haha, I have had so many bad experiences with shitty managers so it’s kind of a joke alias.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

It’s very nice, and thanks for including all instances. We are supposed to be a network of Lemmy instances working together. This site highlights that idea so thank you.

If I could offer an improvement idea, it would be to first show instances that are down in it’s own group, and then every other instance exactly as it’s done now, in alphabetical order.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

I need to go to rehab, clearly.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Im the instance owner of lemmy.today. I contacted fortinet about this and will share their response when it comes.

The instance is running latest version of the default lemmy software on a rented server by Hetzner, so Im very curious what they say about this. There is nothing else on it. :)

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Could be but there was a button at the top of the scanning site where I could push to make a fresh scan. And still it shows up as phishing.

Very mysterious but it will be interesting to find out why…

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

I’m glad LW is hosted there too, it’s a good service and really good customer service as well.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Well everyone else is extreamly overpriced. I work with cloud environments as part of my job, and its silly the amount of money being spent on AWS.

“Pay for what you use” is more like “pay us for every little thing that would be free if you owned the server”.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

I don’t know, I like Lemmy much better.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

No it was part of the request actually :)

We will see. It could get picked up by some media person and made into a bigger thing. After all, many developers are approving this at a rapid pace right now, several per minute.

If I was writing an article about this as a tech journalist, I would include that x number of developers have signed a PR trying to remove this shit from chromium. It has a value as a symbolic message.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

It’s ad blocking and entire operating systems, or computers configured in any way they don’t like.

If this goes through, they can force you to install any plugins they wish, or disable any plugins they wish. Or make sure you don’t run Linux and only Windows or Mac. They can force you to have your camera on. They can do anything since they make the rules.

No innovation will take place. Competing browsers or software will not be allowed or manipulated into marketed as “unsafe”.

This is a takeover of the open web stack as we know it.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

A picture of people who approved so far :)

Yeah I don’t know if someone posted it on reddit, could help I guess.

Elon is a brilliant man isn’t he.

mrmanager,

Kagi is really, really good.

My dog and I got jumped by raccoons this morning. Now I have to pay at least $1500 to make sure I don't get rabies

My dog is fine, though, which is the most important thing to me. The raccoons scratched my arm kinda bad and my legs are covered in scratches. My doctor can’t be sure if the raccoons had saliva on their claws, and wants me to get rabies shots just in case. She sent me to an ER because she can’t get the shots in our area....

America is almost the last country in the world that doesn’t have free healthcare, except for Africa.

@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

That’s actually really interesting. What’s the purpose of so many inactive accounts at once?

Seems to be enough to have a few of them, and not a million accounts since it clearly will rise suspicion… :)

Very good that you found them. Fascinating.

Maybe an attempt to try and make the fediverse look more active than it was back then, to get headlines about how it has explosive growth etc. It was June and everything really took off then.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Try container tabs!

They have separate sessions so you can be logged in to the same site on multiple accounts. This is extreamly useful for stuff like being logged in to github using work account and company account or other sites where you just need many accounts. Aws is another good example.

There is also temporary containers that leave no trace at all.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Well we will see. There will be a lot of demand for websites that doesn’t go along with this shit. So maybe we get a web where individuals again are contributing on their own sites while big tech goes the DRM way.

The same people who today run Lemmy instances are the kind of people that are also interested in seeing that kind of a web, and can help build it. We don’t do it for money.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

You have Firefox profiles too though.

But they are not as integrated as Chromes and requires a restart of the browser I think.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Firefox is great, so sounds like a win to me. :)

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Make sure to install plugins like ublock origin. Firefox still supports this and a few other plugins on mobile, like Bitwarden etc.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Yeah it’s really hard to say it’s only a reskin. It’s clearly not.

There is also github.com/ungoogled-software/ungoogled-chromium as an option.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

I think it’s largely because of Brendan Eich not supporting gay marriage. The browser itself seems fine to me also.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

And that’s exactly the point. WEI makes it a world where big tech decides if they are going to support a competing browser, a competing operating system like Linux, or plugins against ads. They can also force you to have any number of plugins installed, from their choosing.

It destroys the free web completely.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

A lot of us use Linux for gaming now. Supports almost all games. But for God’s sake, pick a amd graphics card if you plan to do Linux gaming. Nvidia is buggy as hell.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

You will be really thankful for learning Linux in the future, the way big tech is going now.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Until they decide you can’t.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

Nvidia is bad and also Ubuntu is using a very old kernel.

I think you should try installing Pop OS instead.

mrmanager,
@mrmanager@lemmy.today avatar

America has a lot, but not free media :)
