cabbagee,

Yes and diet soda isn’t a perfect alternative. We’re still learning about the long term effects of artificial sweeteners. It’s a headache trying to navigate the options.

There are seltzer waters that have caffeine. I would guess those are comparable to black coffee in terms of healthiness.

cabbagee,

Black coffee and tea are considered the healthiest options because no sugar, no sugar substitutes, no preservatives or other additives, and they’ve been used long enough that the health implications are well researched.

Diet sodas have ingredients that are considered safe in moderation by the FDA, but we are still learning about the long term effects of artificial sugars and different additives. There are caffeinated seltzers out there with just natural flavoring and caffeine. That would probably be a better comparison to black coffee and tea.

cabbagee,

Absolutely true. Aspartame is generally regarded as safe under 40mg/kg and still researching long term effects doesn’t mean it’s dangerous, just that there may be more to discover. To be fair, science is constantly evolving and new discoveries are being made every day for… well, everything. Still, if you want to find the “healthiest” way to get your daily caffeine, there are options out there with minimal additives. Black coffee, tea, seltzers, even pills.

How do I tame my frustration toward my aging parents?

My parents are 57 and 63. My mother is erratic, forgetful, and when she gets mad she sometimes screams and throws things. My father is slowly going deaf, getting slower and more stubborn and forgetful as well. They can be infuriating sometimes, but I know that they’re aging and I can’t be mad at them. How do I deal with...

cabbagee,

Get help when you can, remember to fill your cup before others, and try to make peace with the fact that you will have very little control over their older years.

I was a caretaker to my grandmother for a while and now am approaching a similar stage with my mother. This is pretty cynical, but at a certain point everything’s a downward slope. Sometimes gentle, sometimes steep, and punctuated by good days but the overall course doesn’t change. Accepting how little control I have and acknowledging the downward slope has helped in some ways. It’s an absolutely brutal journey, but it’s like a rip current. You can fight and swim against it or you can swim parallel to shore. You might end up further out in the end but you’ll at least have the energy to make it back.

cabbagee,

Yup, completely normal. I have hard water and my kettles get calcium buildup after a handful of uses. Soak with white vinegar to remove the buildup. Or if you’re like me and forget until last second, boil 50/50 vinegar/water and deal with the vinegar smell, lol.

How the fuck can I kill 20 hours?

My 13 hour flight just got delayed 7 hours, I’m stuck at my second airport, and I dont think I’m gonna make it. I have some movies and audio books on my phone, but really only anticipated having to burn the flight time via napping and some media, not 7 hours leading up to it, and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna mentally burn...

cabbagee,

Go exploring. Walk the airport and go to other wings if it’s a large airport. You might be able to find a luggage locker so you can walk without carrying anything.

In the same line, there are a lot of games that gamify walking. One. Two. The goal here is to exhaust your body a bit better for the 13 hr flight.

Learn something. A new language, maybe. A skill. Learn braille and go around the airport decoding the braille signs.

Do an airport scavenger hunt. Can you find yarn and maybe practice finger knitting? Maybe a deck of cards and learn some card tricks?

Talk to people. Honestly I’m an introvert so I rarely do this but it can be fun.

Does your major in college really matters?

I’m in my last year of college and for some reason, I decided to design my own major, and I feel like I made a mistake, I’m looking at jobs RN and feel like no employer is going to understand it at all. And that I don’t really have much in demand skills? (FYI - it’s a BA in community development, so kinda like urban...

cabbagee,

Yes. For many companies, a 4-yr degree is a non-negotiable requirement. Any 4 year degree just to be considered. If you manage to get a good job without a degree, you will still be categorized by HR as a degree holder or not. This doesn’t always factor into raises, promotions, layoffs, but it can.

cabbagee,

If I remember correctly at the end he actually sees five lights but still says four. Fantastic way to show that Picard is human and fallible, but his spirit is stronger.

cabbagee,

What does the lock look like? Does unlocking on one side mean the lock portion on the other side moves too?

If it’s like the sliding doors I know with the flat lock, you could use something like this and keep it flat to lock.

cabbagee,

I find they take the edge off my food cravings. But if you have a balanced diet with no natural deficiencies then you’re probably fine.

cabbagee,

Savory french toast > waffles > sweet french toast > pancakes

:D

cabbagee,

Yes but savory french toast rules all. Red Dog Toast is also very good.

Does Anyone Have a TIFU Moment When Cooking?

I was finishing a jar of extremely hot peppers (7 pot primos) that I had fermenting on Thanksgiving day. I made a hot sauce with them and cantaloupe. I had them in a pan at a low simmer to meld the flavors. The problem was the steam coming off was potent as hell. It filled the house when everyone was arriving and coughing from...

cabbagee,

I just had the same experience. Gotta tell you, parm mac and cheese is not good. Ended up adding a whole extra bag of noodles and tomato sauce for sweetness and acidity. It’s edible now but I went overboard cause I can’t even taste the parm.

cabbagee,

I’m sure parm would be good in breadcrumbs on top or a little in the sauce but this was a mistake sauce that was just parm and cream. Live and learn.

For mac and cheese, have you tried hot sauce? Just a little makes the cheese pop. It’s like coffee and chocolate.

cabbagee,

A string of mild injuries has pushed me the other way. I love driving standard but there’s no leniency. If I twist my knee, pull a leg muscle, etc., I have to choose between driving or making that injury worse. I can’t afford to be home bound just cause I rolled my ankle over the weekend.

cabbagee,

Cause 30C is warm but 39C is heat stroke. Bigger range than 80-89F (warm to really warm), 90-99F (hot to really hot), 100F+ (heat stroke hot).

cabbagee,

Do you have a link for that background? It’s straight fire.

cabbagee,

Wow, thank you! There are some great backgrounds in there!

cabbagee,

You’re the best. These are gorgeous, thank you!

cabbagee,

Never seen this before, why does the cat have a magnet on his collar?

cabbagee,

I’m not saying it’s harmful. Just wanted to know if there’s a functional use for it.

cabbagee,

Can you expand on why you need them?

My suggestion is try dried flowers. They come in smaller varieties but I’d expect expensive shipping since they’re very delicate.

cabbagee,

Bright red blood? Probably not a problem but talk to your doctor if it’s persistent

Dark red to black? More serious, anywhere from get-to-the-ER-now to make an appointment asap.

cabbagee,

Can I get a link for that kind of job security?

cabbagee,

As I remember, casual conversation on reddit was also a bit low on traffic compared to other communities. Maybe we need to be more proactive by plugging relative communities in other threads.

18+ What are some of your worst moments in life?

Edit: Im asking because I’m currently going through some serious depression and I’ve been forgetting stuff lately. I wake up every morning with a panic attack, I am too tired to do anything. I barely had any appetite to eat. I just wanted to see if I’m the only one. Hearing stories from others makes me feel less alone....

cabbagee,

I had a similar experience, not with broken bones but with joint injuries and generalized hypermobility. I had so many trouble joints that the physical therapy for one joint would be hard on others, sometimes to the point of reinjuring. Finding exercises was a minefield and keeping a routine was a constant balancing act.

For years I had to go mind numbingly slow. I used to weight lift and the few exercises I could do were incredibly boring in comparison. I wanted to be able to crush the exercises and advance out of the boredom, but my body simply couldn’t keep up without new injuries. It’s been about 4 years now and I’m finally able to add some exercises I like, but it’s painfully slow. I like walking but every time I step on the treadmill I want to go faster, longer. Then I injure myself because I went 2.5 mph instead of 2 and 1.5 mi instead of 1. Frustrating.

When I look back, I can see the improvements. I realize a joint that used to be in constant pain hasn’t been trouble for a while. I almost cried when I could kneel on the floor again. The physical therapy is working. What I thought would take weeks takes months, what I thought would take months takes years. But if I’m going to live several more decades (hopefully), I have that time. So might as well keep up with it.

cabbagee,

Deal breaker for me. Real or no, I don’t fuck with magic.

cabbagee,

I mean, both? Both is good.

cabbagee,

The image is compressed vertically.

cabbagee,

Seconding this. I’ve used both and I had no idea what OP was talking about.

cabbagee,

Even for the most gentle shipment service, this doesn’t look like enough packaging.

cabbagee,

That specific instance sounds like a non-event.

There’s two things going on here that you should have a conversation with your girlfriend about.

  1. This event is really bothering you. You should dig a bit to find the source of this anxiety. Maybe you have general anxiety and need to take steps to manage it. Maybe you have insecurities about your relationship that you need to address with your gf.
  2. Whatever the status is for #1, relationship jokes hit too close to home for you right now. It’s ok to ask your gf to try to refrain from these kind of jokes while you work on the source of your anxiety. There’s times when I’ve had to ask my SO the same. Sometimes it’s because the joke itself is insensitive or comes from a bad place, but sometimes it’s because I’m not in the right place for that joke myself. The main thing is work on the source but it’s ok to ask for help in the meantime.
cabbagee,

Exercises that work the upper back. I like band pull aparts.

cabbagee,

Talk to your doctor if you don’t feel like you’re seeing any effects. The Internet isn’t qualified for this.

And I look super ugly

Honey I wish I could give you a hug. Your body is on a journey right now, be kind to yourself.

cabbagee,

I might be on the spectrum but I would have no idea. I assume everyone’s more socially adept than I am.

cabbagee,

1 kid cuts, the other chooses. Keeps things fair.

cabbagee,

Yup. There should be a couple where you normally buy alcohol. Check out middle eastern grocery stores too. Mine has a wide range of NA beers.

cabbagee,

Twist: it’s Jan. 2 in the comic.

cabbagee,

how do you cope with people not understanding your thought process, ideas or just your way of life?

This isn’t an intelligence problem, it’s a communication problem. Soft skills are another kind of intelligence that happens to be a blind spot in IQ tests. If you’re struggling with expressing yourself, look into improving your communication skills. Books are a good place to start. Putting yourself in situations where you will have to talk to strangers is another.

If you have a higher IQ and are in high level studies or esoteric fields, I’d encourage you to expand your definition of intelligence. I’ve found the most important kinds of intelligence in life don’t show on IQ tests.

cabbagee,

I would buy the drumsticks too at that price. If you’re not looking for the historical reasons, then it’s purely preference and recipe. Drumsticks are higher in meat and chicken wings are higher in skin and sauce surface area. I usually prefer drumsticks but wings win when the recipe makes the skin super crunchy or I want a higher ratio of sauce.

cabbagee,

It could be a kind of hygrophorus speciosus. The wiki says US but the entry for hygrophorus includes UK.

Goes without saying, but probably don’t eat it, especially not off internet identification.

cabbagee,

I don’t see a way to comment on the cat sub list but I’d like to plug !meow_irl for cat memes.

cabbagee,

Just finished The Librarians and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Onto Good Omens but have no idea how to follow this trio.

cabbagee,

Both are fantastic and what lead me to the librarians. Maybe it’s time for a rewatch.

cabbagee,

No favorites unfortunately, but there’s a lot of good looking recipes and vegan bouillons like this. You might have to experiment to find which one works the best in the curry.

I love carrot hot dogs! Surprising how accurate the taste can be.

Good luck and please make another post to let us know how it goes!
