bdonvr,

I make like two gallons of sauce… freeze half and have leftovers for a few days on the other half.

bdonvr,

It’s a joke comic about the copyright system.

bdonvr,

I’ve never watched it, we had a box set when I was growing up. I assumed it was my step-mother’s as she’s far more into anime. But now maybe I think it was my mother’s (mtf bio father) lmao

bdonvr,

AFAIK you can block the POSTS of another instance from your feed. And only posts from communities hosted on those instances. But their users’ comments and posts will still appear for you everywhere else.

bdonvr,

The people are a little biased on the extreme Marxist side of things

(and we like it that way, tyvm)

bdonvr,

Ah yes, that video I’ve seen like three times in its entirety for some reason

what is a skill you wish you had, and why?

Ok, I might as well go first: I wish I could draw. Not at the level where I could make photorealistic portraits, but I’ve always been envious of those who are able to scetch something together in a few minutes that perfectly captures what they want to convey. Sometimes words aren’t enough to express what I want to say, and...

Look into Comprehensible Input. Dreaming Spanish is a great channel/site.

It’s really not difficult to do per se, it just takes a LOT of time. 1500+ hours. But if you can replace the time you spend watching YouTube videos and doomscrolling, you’ll get there eventually. Especially once you reach the point of understanding media in the language you’re learning. You can then go mindlessly watch YouTube again… but in that language lmao.

Check out this playlist for an explanation of the method (turn on subtitles) youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlpPf-YgbU7GrtxQ9yde-J… , TL;DW don’t study the language. Don’t do grammar/vocab by rote. Literally just listen to a crap ton of the language. You will learn grammar/vocab naturally with repetition in context. But you must listen/watch at a level you can understand. That starts with content with a lot of hand gestures and simple stories, where maybe you don’t understand the words but you understand the meaning by the rest of the context. After a hundred hours or so you can move on to content with less context clues, and after maybe 400-600 hours start with media meant for native speakers.

bdonvr,

French is considered just about as hard as Spanish, maybe a little harder on the phonetics. German is harder than French or Spanish. Russian is harder than German/French/Spanish, but Japanese would be significantly harder than Russian.

bdonvr,

Yeah that’s probably true. Perhaps something like this?

Hardware RAID. Not too expensive.

Yeah it’s USB and not likely to be super performant, but I don’t think I need super fast read/write for media playback.

bdonvr,

Oh yeah, I backup all configs 4*day. The good thing about torrenting is even if I had catastrophic loss, as long as I have the list of torrents it should repopulate (assuming someone’s seeding).

Of course I also want to self host my personal photos/videos, and I can’t afford to lose those. I’ll have to look into seeing if any solutions support local storage plus maybe object storage as a backup.

bdonvr,

On my PC direct play is possible 99% of the time.

I also watch a lot on my Apple TV which requires transcoding for some codecs.

But the big thing is my SO who does watch on the go often.

bdonvr,

Mid resolution, but my god the bitrate…

bdonvr,

I’m having compsci flashbacks help

bdonvr,

Shit if I think I got my point across I’m pretty happy

Actually really I think more often we think “I SHOULD have said that!”. It’s like we know so so many words until a native comes to talk to us and then all our words go hiding somewhere.

bdonvr,

I think what they mean is that you can just make a swap FILE instead, which you can grow and shrink as needed. No need to mess with partitioning.

bdonvr,

Dislike Apple if you want, but they make a decent set top box free of OS-level ads and crap

bdonvr,

YouTube view counts can lag a few hours behind when videos get sudden huge views like this

bdonvr,

la chancla

bdonvr,

I have three mothers, though I don’t call them by their first names.

bdonvr,

Parents got divorced, father remarried (stepmother). Then transitioned to female 🏳️‍⚧️ (still married)

bdonvr,

Yeah like it would’ve been better to leave the doo there, now you’ve littered shit AND a bag.

bdonvr,

There’s an app for that, Fog of World.

Here’s my map.

bdonvr,

Correct. Most of it took a year and a half before I got a job that keeps me home every night. Hit all 48 contiguous states except Vermont (I tried to avoid the northeast whenever possible)

bdonvr,

More traffic, and way less truck parking. If you’re not shut down by 4pm forget about it.

Out west I got longer loads, better views, and always somewhere to park outside of the cities. Midwest is okay but a bit boring, southeast isn’t much better than northeast.

bdonvr,

Nah on this app you actually back up the data yourself by hooking into one of your personal cloud storage accounts

bdonvr,

Sure, but neither are self hosted media servers, and if you can afford/run the one you can afford/run the other. Domain names are cheap as dirt and aren’t all that complicated for anyone running a home server.

Why didn't anyone remind me the dual booting exists?

I was talking to my dad yesterday and he talked about how he dual booted windows and Linux in his college days. I immediately left to download Ubuntu, I feel so dumb for forgetting it’s an option. I literally only use windows so I can play Fortnite with friends. PSA: you can have both Linux and Windows, or you can use a vm in...

bdonvr,

I always found having each OS have a separate physical drive is much better, but partitioning is fine if you must.

bdonvr,

It’s a luxury indeed. Hopefully maybe a little less now that decent storage has come down in price a lot

bdonvr,

I don’t think blahaj has downvotes, so they don’t really count lol

bdonvr,

Why not both?

I shouldn’t have to wade through possibly ad-filled, data-collecting, unknown third party apps to do a basic function…

bdonvr,

Yep. Dude was definitely nutso, but he was an incredible programmer. Shame really.

bdonvr,

The best part is their autocorrect changed it to “should have”, so they said something like “should have is just as correct as should have”

bdonvr,

The top banner shows content from whatever app you hover over. You can rearrange your apps.

And I don’t use Music on mine much but I’m pretty sure it just shows your own content?

bdonvr,

macOS is certified UNIX. I don’t think the other Darwin OSes are. Though it’s more a licensing thing iirc

bdonvr,

Am not a statistician, but my understanding is predicting single events are pretty hard.

Predicting the percentage outcomes of a lot of events? That can be done.

bdonvr,

Am I meant to read this to the tune of Dixie?

bdonvr,

It’s not a stack. Two players are playing, the +4 also skips the turn of the player it affects. The person who played the +4 is then allowed to play any valid card such as a +4 wild.

bdonvr,

I hope they used kawaii variable names at least

bdonvr,

Beating the ultra wealthy with a rock is entertaining, if not funny.

bdonvr,

I just check every few hours instead of doomscrolling. It’d be nice to have more content and more active niche communities, but somehow I think this is better for me lmao. Anyways it feels cozier but not on the decline imo
