TropicalDingdong,

You’ll dig forever, own nothing, eat bugs, and love it.

Anyways here’s Wonderwall.

TropicalDingdong,

Bros not even waiting for his stars to go down.

TropicalDingdong,

playing through witcher rn, shit sweet

TropicalDingdong,

This is actually just a reference guide on the wall at the court for pizza crimes at the Hague.

TropicalDingdong,

Its like indie music versus indie rock.

Indie music has been around forever, with a wide range of artists from different styles contributing. It means being on an independent label and many artists of many different styles contribute to it.

Indie rock is a particular style that evolved out of the indie music scene. It has a particular sound and some consistent themes. It evolved out of but is not limited to the indie music scene.

There are sever non-“Indie music” bands that make “Indie rock”.

Pixel graphics, avant-garde play styles, weird themes. These are hallmarks of the “indie style” of game development, and evolve from not necessarily having the resources of a large studio. But they themselves become the definitions of what it means to be “indie”. Consider turntables and record scratches in hip hop. Consider 8 track recorders in techno, and 4 track recorders in garage music.

I think the quote from CB sums it up: “The work, which becomes a new genre itself, will be called… COWBOY BEBOP”

TropicalDingdong,

City skylines 1 on steam deck is grand. Runs very smoothly and some great community controllers for it. Better than desktop imo.

TropicalDingdong,

I probably will once it gets cheaper.

TropicalDingdong,

Right.

I was looking at this and thinking "I bet this is just a map of cities.’

This may seem kind of stupid but I am kind of stupid, is there a list somewhere of phrases that are stupid or insensitive racially or gender biased?

I just got up from conversation with a couple of older black men, that I said “well I got to go back to work and start cracking the whip.” And it occurred to me then that it was probably a really insensitive stupid thing to say....

TropicalDingdong,

I’m a Linux user and love some good rices. But I’ve no idea what “ricing” comes from. Why is it offensive?

I believe it is racist slang that emerged in the 90s with the advent of cheap japanese and korean cars that were easily customizable (civics, accuras, etc…). Throw a turbo and a loud exhaust, and bam, now its a rice burner. These were prevalent in Asian immigrant communities, but also other places.

It basically meant like, cheap, but also very fast car, of Asian origin.

TropicalDingdong,

Gotta have that conservative christian chicken sandwich.

TropicalDingdong,

I was just thinking about how great it was that lemmy has improved to the point that I now have to put it on my leechblock list. Lemmy has improved dramatically to warrant that.

If you are having trouble with productivity or doing meaningful stuff with your life, no reason not to use tools to help you. Beyond that, I think that social media does have its place in a modern socialization diet, and its important to socialize with strangers. But like most things, don’t go overkill. It makes the experience shittier and makes you shittier.

TropicalDingdong,

car brains will interpret this as a problem with bike infrastructure.

TropicalDingdong,

kind of a duh conclusion.

otherwise you wouldn’t be able to improve at the game.

TropicalDingdong,

I think shifting your reward cycle would help. Right now you are hooked on the dopamine from going hard, which is fine , but if you want to change, you need to replace the reward system. It also might help to ask how old you are? It is a tendency of the youth to have a lack of long term vision, which can make it hard to create a more sustainable reward cycle .

TropicalDingdong,

Bro Rogan.

Its real simple. It gives them identity and something to go after in a society that offers them nothing. So they get into woodworking, hunting, fighting, only eat meat for a while or some shit.

Males are expendable, the way that all people in capitalism are expendable. But to quote Babe from animal farm: Some are more expendable than others. Males have lower impulse control and have a biological more likely to engage in high risk/ high reward. Most white males are facing the same dilemmas and contradictions around the shittiness and meaninglessness of their existence as everyone else; every one else just doesn’t have a direct pipeline to radicalism engineered for them. For years YT has been trying to steer me down the white nationalist rabbit hole, in-spite of how unappologetically leftist the programing I consume is. I’m a bit older and I’ve been around and politically aware since I was a teen and made the impulsive decision to enlist, then months later we were invading Afghanistan and then Iraq.

To incorrectly quote Michael Brooks quoting MLK incorrectly: “Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.”. The right offers a clear moral framework for engaging with young men and giving them a ‘moral right’ to fight for. The left is contradicted on this, and don’t understand what it means to take on a spiritual crusade. But Michael Brooks did. He understood that having something to base your work around is critical.

This same issue plagues young men from all nationalities and walks of life, not just young white men in the US. We have to collectively find a way to give meaning to peoples lives or that innate search for meaning will be taken advantage of.

TropicalDingdong,

I mean, you don’t have to sympathize with someone to try and understand them.

You’ll never beat something you don’t understand.

TropicalDingdong,

This 💯

TropicalDingdong,

I mean… what would it even mean to have equity in a non-profit?

Non-profits are organized fundamentally differently than for profit corporations.

If anything they should have had equity in the for-profit side of the company to ensure that their incentives were aligned, if that is even your point.

I think it brings up a very interesting test case for how this particular kind of ownership structure can fail. In another thread, it strikes the difference between authority and power, which I think was very clearly made here.

That all being said, it seems like things have taken a turn for the worse, and if anything, this board has set the mission of a truly open AI world even further back. There seem to be some real Luddites on the board who seem to think they’ll some how be able to cram Pandora back in the box after it has well escaped control. If anything, the should swing the gate wide and at least open source the everything else so as to prevent Microsoft from having a complete monopoly on the future of AI (how things seem to be shaping up).

TropicalDingdong,

If you’ve ever been a part of something that had real leadership, this is what it looks like.

TropicalDingdong,

Yeah that’s what I thought. I’ve formed/ been a part of several non-profits that have looked at developing for-profit components to fund the non-profit mission.

TropicalDingdong,

I mean, that seems like a generally fine structure.

I think they maybe could have figured out a different path that didn’t involve MS. But otherwise, it seems fine.

TropicalDingdong,

Hmm. Thats a neat feature. I love signal.

TropicalDingdong,

damn, we really shouldnt discuss things that have happened in the past.

TropicalDingdong,

Ah yes, let me just type into a search engine a search for all of the things that I don’t know that I don’t know about…

TropicalDingdong,

I simply do not have bo. I’ve never worn deodorant because se I’ve never needed to. I’ve had the non existence of my non bo confirmed by men, women , and non gender confirming individuals.

TropicalDingdong,

Hmm that’s super interesting. I wonder what kinds of volaltile ices phosphorus can make in deep space.

TropicalDingdong,

I believe this is right after psychotic mommie issues superman murders a protestor with his Lazer vision and is surprised to be cheered for it by his supporters.

Huh. What show is it?

TropicalDingdong,

there is very very very little nuclear waste.this is complete handwringing. it can be buried and forgotten.

Bigger issue is the carbon costs and pay back periods. Nuclear (unless you’ve got sources otherwise stating) is green in it’s planning phase but not as often in execution. A shit ton of concrete is used, and the plants rarely operate at the capacity they are expected to (or have in the past). Open to revision but that’s my current understanding.

They are a massive upfront carbon cost and only become carbon neutral or negative relative to fossil fuels 20+ years down the line.

TropicalDingdong,

How are there individuals who understand the Palestinian/Gaza conflict circumstances regarding Biden yet don’t have knowledge of Trump’s absolute undying support for Benjamin Netanyahu?

Because its inconvenient to their narrative.

TropicalDingdong,

Any one who is saying the wouldn’t vote for Biden because they are taking a stance against genocide is unlikely to have voted for Biden first place, or even to have voted at all, and can and should be safely ignored. They aren’t arguing in good faith.

TropicalDingdong,

If anything it represents consistency.

TropicalDingdong,

it seems like if you are interested in private, Lemmy isn’t really a great place?

It strikes me that the lemiverse is basically self doxximg with no ability to get rid of the data. I mean I don’t really know what gwts logged but it seems like it’s never gone via federation.

TropicalDingdong,

At which point it becomes Gregus.

TropicalDingdong,

So, more broadly, want to express the sense that there is a bigger issue around ‘unspoken market collusion’ that I dont know fits under the existing terms of monopoly, price fixing, or conspiracy, but is very very very clearly evident in a wide range of markets. Three great examples of this are oil prices, food prices during and post pandemic (coffee being one that goes far further back in time; 16 ounce coffee bags used to be standard), and digital services (ie, the enshitification of all things; a ‘conspiracy’ to make all things ‘worse’ because their is no where else to go).

The free market idealism, a worship of the supposed power of competition, is so obviously horse shit that only 8th grade level MBAs and their sycophants truly believe that shit. Its so obviously not how things work at scale, but because of field effects of many players whose are incentives are aligned (around capture and deregulation), we seem to have lost any real mechanisms for addressing the fact that so many industries are in a silent form of conspiracy to fix prices and monopolize market spaces.

Its frustrating that its happening, but its equally frustrating to not have people calling it out for what it is. Each of these story lines is but a thread in a broader narrative around these examples (Apple and Amazon), consistently happening over time, repeatedly fucking over consumers who are effectively operated on by both governments and corporations to become perfect consumers (tools to destroy the yields of production to justify endless production).

We need a way to push back against the kinds of capture that we don’t seem to currently have the ability to address. Specifically (at least in the US) Citizens United, and corporate lobbying. I’m tired of pretending that markets solve anything. I’m tired of pretending that ‘good guy capitalism’ is anything other than a half cycle of a corporate mechanism to enslave the world.

TropicalDingdong,

Depending on your usage of a VPN, it can help your anonymity, but it’s very much not necessary.

Can you extend this metaphor to help me understand the issue? I was getting signed up with mullvad, and they have a tor browser. I’ll be honest that I dont really get it.
