Nope. Not at all. I can’t wait for more.

Discovery … I still can’t believe what they did to the Klingons and I have other issues but… goddamnit that show won me over in spite of itself. Will start season 3 in a while. And I liked the first two seasons of Picard I don’t care what anyone says.

I might be alone in saying all that, idk lol

But not The Civil Rights Act of 1964. Presumably you mean The Civil Rights Act of 1968?

I’d like to point out that while some things about the assassination of MLK don’t add up, conspiracy theories don’t agree about exactly who was behind the assassination. A civil case in 1999 pointed to the Mafia and Nashville law enforcement, for example.

Although there isn’t sufficient evidence, I think, to draw a solid conclusion about any of these theories, I don’t think they are outside the realm of plausibility.

After all, the FBI had expended quite a bit of effort to discredit MLK. They had mailed alleged sex tapes to King with a letter urging him to kill himself. And we now know that the FBI had put together a dossier of unverified claims. It’s also well known King was wiretapped on the word of J E Hoover since 1963 and surveilled since 1956.

As threatened as racists in power were by MLK, it isn’t a huge stretch to imagine one of the more corrupt ones going farther than simply attempting to discredit him or push him to suicide, since those tactics didn’t work.

I stuck with Mint for about a decade but switched to Nobara for gfx drivers. Now that Mint is on a newer kernel I’m seriously thinking of going back because my current distro is just not as stable as Mint was. And I like Cinnamon better than Gnome. I miss my Mint.

Custom shell prompt tips and tricks?

Recently I stumbled over an article, about how to customize your shell prompt. What really surprised me, is that it lacked one of the most basic tips I learned nearly 20 years back: Always display a timestamp in the prompt, to be able to check how long a process is running or when it ended. (Don’t need it daily, but every so...

Moms for Liberty members call the cops on Florida librarians (popular.info)

Two members of Moms for Liberty, a right-wing activist group, have reported several Florida school librarians to law enforcement. They claimed they had evidence that librarians were distributing "pornography" to minors and requested that law enforcement officers be dispatched. This represents a serious escalation of the tactics...

Want to get rid of religion? Educate kids with critical thinking and get them excited about science – the whole process. Teach them to find their own answers scientifically. Religious zealotry can’t survive in minds so cultivated.

Good to know. I really need to settle on a replacement soon. I wished we could just keep a phone for 10 years with no issue. Because I really like this damn thing and nothing else really ticks all the same boxes.

Here is the link in that article to The study

Regarding mathematical impossibility…

We then provide a theoretical impossibility result indicating that as language models become more sophisticated and better at emulating human text, the performance of even the best-possible detector decreases. For a sufficiently advanced language model seeking to imitate human text, even the best-possible detector may only perform marginally better than a random classifier. Our result is general enough to capture specific scenarios such as particular writing styles, clever prompt design, or text paraphrasing.

Interesting. Now, this is just one paper. And one paper does not mean the science is settled on that topic.

The implications are certainly interesting.

I’m curious how much data would be required to successfully mimic a specific writing style (e.g. lemmy post or research paper or letter to family) for a specific person. And conversely how easy it would be to detect.

I haven’t thought about this in depth yet. But the threats that come to mind are: someone spoofing me for some reason or me using AI to “research” and write for me (school, say) so I don’t actually have to learn anything. The former makes me wonder if digital signatures will become more widely adopted. The latter probably requires a different approach to assessing the knowledge of students. I’m sure there are other threats we can think of given a little more time.

if we’re speaking to a real person or an actual human being

Ummm …

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

To me this question hints at the seismic paradigm shift that comes from generative AI.

I struggle to wrap my head around it and part of me just wants to give up on everything. But… We now have to wrestle with questions like:

What is art and do humans matter in the process of creating it? Whether novels, graphic arts, plays, whatever else?

What is the purpose of writing?

What if anything is still missing from generative writing versus human writing?

Is the difference between human intelligence and generative AI just a question of scale and complexity?

Now or in the future, can human experience be simulated by a generative AI via training on works produced by humans with human experience?

If an AI can now or some day create a novel that is meaningful or moving to readers, with all the hallmarks of a literary masterwork, is it still of value? Does it matter who/what wrote it?

Can an AI have novel ideas and insights? Is it a question of technology? If so, what is so special about humans?

Do humans need to think if AI one day can do it for us and even do it better than we can?

Is there any point in existing if we aren’t needed to create, think, generate ideas and insights? If our intellect is superfluous?

If human relationships conducted in text and video can be simulated on one end by a sufficiently complex AI, to fool the human, is it really a friendship?

Are we all just essentially biological machines and our bonds simply functions of electrochemical interactions, instincts, and brain patterns?

I’m late to the game on all this stuff. I’m sure many have wrestled with a lot of this. But I also think maybe generative AI will force far more of us to confront some of these things.

2023 and we’re still body shaming dick size.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

For more complex devices, I agree videos can be better.

For simpler repairs, text and stills take me less time to understand than videos, especially with ones that pad a 2 minute video to 10 minutes so it can be monetized, with like 4 minutes of intro, 2 minutes of content stretched to 4, and 2 min of outro.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

A side note/observation: good videos also take significantly more time to create/edit, along with getting decent equipment, which means a much higher startup cost.

Starbucks announces higher pay, but union workers will have to bargain for it (www.cnn.com)

Starbucks employees are getting more pay and new benefits, but some are only going to baristas that haven’t unionized. A National Labor Relations Board judge previously found that similar moves by Starbucks violate federal labor law, with the company appealing the decision....

agent_flounder,

I hope they poke harder. This seems to be the year of unions rising up. Let the Starbucks union gain some more power and maybe the effect snowballs some more.

Totally agree. It’s always a risk buying used. You have to be savvy on what to look for, research if there are common catastrophic problems, and hope the vehicle was maintained properly (any car needs more than just oil changes, including Toyota and Honda) and was not abused.

Generally you’re taking less of a risk buying new because of a good warranty and known history, but be sure to get a reliable car not something that will give lots of problems over its life. Plenty of data on which cars are best in that regard. Some makers are better than others on average but reliability can vary by model and model year, even.

Yes, cars depreciate in terms of resale value. That’s why we keep ours for 10-15 years. By then it doesn’t matter.
