Also, what’s the plan to correct salaries for higher than normal inflation over the last several quarters?

(Or maybe that would get you fired idk)

We only send the most heinous offenders to coffee geek jail. We’re coming for you, Folgers drinkers!

No need… Those on the list can object and I’m sure the judge will remove their names if they’re powerful enough.

I think it is worth pointing out that while therapy can certainly help you manage stress better and be more content maybe, if you are truly struggling and falling further behind here in the US, no amount of therapy (which you can’t afford anyway) is going to make you stop being hungry, sleep deprived, heal severe injury or illness, or give your home back. And going without food, sleep, or housing can lead to death.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

What if your needs take a back seat to your trauma? That can’t be good either.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

If you’re happier now then awesome!

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

People don’t need to toughen up. If they’re struggling they are already tougher than you realize and maybe tougher than you can imagine.

Yet even the toughest can’t go it alone forever. Nor should they have to. Sucking it up isn’t healthy and it isn’t a bragging point. It is unwise.

If you need help, you need help. Nobody has the right to tell you that you don’t.

This idea that we have to be rugged individualists is bull puckey and is probably responsible for a lot of suicides especially among men.

All people thrive with support and without it they crash and burn eventually.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

That makes a lot of sense, thanks.

UK? Yeah that shit is scary. I am gobsmacked they’re pulling that authoritarian crap.

I’m probably full of shit but here is what I’m thinking. Some things like employers not paying enough and treating employees like shit in various ways-- that is depressing if we are totally helpless. If we can form unions and protest in effective ways, that actually get some reforms going, then it feels like maybe there is some hope.

Content isn’t the right response. Neither is giving up in despair. Being able to channel anger and frustration productively seems lots better.

If you’re lonely for a bit, or some things aren’t going great you can learn to live with that, for now while also working on fixing what you can. Spinning your wheels fretting and self-pitying doesn’t help but taking action does.

Some things will always be outside of my control.

It is probably best to find a way to accept those things. Rather than stewing about them. Because all that does is make me feel worse.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I popped over there for a sec and holy hell what a toxic crap hole. Like, ok, on lemmy there are a few shitty takes here and there. But most of the folks writing them are generally ok and it is a one off. Discussions are mostly good faith and reasonably civil. Signal to noise ratio is so much higher.

On Reddit it is just a deluge of hateful bullshit and most of those post an endless stream of it. Nearly all the discussions are bad faith full of venom and ire pushing propaganda and lies and hate. With downvote brigading and astroturfing galore.

(Mind you I don’t see anything from hexbear anymore… Quite a few really bad eggs from that basket JFC)

Just moved to Linux: a follow up

I recently made a post discussing my move to Linux on Fedora, and it’s been going great. But today I think I have now become truly part of this community. I ran a command that borked my bootloader and had to do a fresh install. Learned my lesson with modifying the bootloader without first doing thorough investigation lol....

Sweet, welcome! :) I know the feeling. I just finished reinstalling Nobara after being dumb and goofing up patching. Then I tried to fix it and made the system totally unusable and I gave up.

A while ago I jacked my grub config and decided to try to fix it manually. I managed to stumble through it and learned some stuff, though I am still fuzzy on some details.

I mostly want to just use the computer without a lot of headache and both Mint and Nobara have been great for coding (various), electronics design, 3d modeling and printing, graphics, photo editing, and such.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

Totally valid! Theoretically with more experience it may be easier / faster to fix but…idk

See this is why I keep /home on a separate partition (or drive in some cases). I can reinstall or switch distros anytime without worrying about all my files (they’re backed up, anyway but doing a restore is a pita).

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

I can’t for lack of evidence and aside from curiosity I don’t really need to. It is interesting to ponder.

Scientific theories exist but I’m not sure how one can reliably determine which, if any, are the better explanation.

What is a term to describe expressing one's opinions with links and memes instead of words?

My views on things often differ from those in my social circle. I am often bombarded with article links and videos from people with no words of their own attached. It is very easy to send a link. It takes a bit of effort to form a coherent paragraph expressing a single thought....

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

It’s simply parroting what they see/read/hear, isn’t it? If they can’t explain their opinion in their own words is it really their opinion? Do they even understand it or the arguments against it?

Not sticking up for that girl in class (in the 80d) that the super scary bully called ugly. Worse. Going along with his bullshit. Fucking hell. I was such a goddamn smarmy scared little bitch. Never, ever again.

Young zoomers communicate in memes. Tamarian, but with pictures.

what is a skill you wish you had, and why?

Ok, I might as well go first: I wish I could draw. Not at the level where I could make photorealistic portraits, but I’ve always been envious of those who are able to scetch something together in a few minutes that perfectly captures what they want to convey. Sometimes words aren’t enough to express what I want to say, and...

I bet you could find a class on it somewhere. Trade school or adult edu or even a local car club might have occasional offerings. This one is on my list too.

I was gonna write a fully researched rebuttal but… eh

They are. A lot of the new math curriculum my kid took in elementary school was exactly about that. Estimating, quick ways to calculate things, and sort of an underlying grasp of what it all means vs just memorizing multiplication tables or something. So much better than the bullshit way they taught me 40 years ago.

Can’t be any worse than what I did to bork my Nobara install during the last update. Now half the letters on system widgets are blank lol. Might be a great time to switch distros. And get the devil’s kernel.

I honestly can’t think of seeing anything like that.

For me it is usually due to how incessantly preachy and judgemental some vegans are. I respect their choices and consistent choice of morality. But people tend to get annoyed when someone else feels the right to dictate their morality to them. See also: religious nuts.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

It’s pretty nuts what they’re asking for meat. I don’t do the major shopping in the family but last time I went to get some ground beef… holy sweet baby cheez wiz. I could swear it the price had doubled since the last time I looked (which was probably pre covid).

There are so many great vegetarian recipes out there. Like, I mean, original things that were designed without meat in mind from the start not fake meat stuff like those vegetarian ribs I made one time. shudders

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

I think our ancestors also hunted large game which is why we evolved to be endurance hunters. Not that we are bound so tightly to our evolutionary as all that. But still.

I support vegans and respect their decisions, I just have little interest in being one myself.

Although when I buy leather products (belts shoes) I tend to buy ones that last decades. So there’s that. And yeah I try to reduce meat consumption and I strive to do better.

agent_flounder,
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

I appreciate that you are willing to engage on the topic respectfully. And you ask good questions.

I have spent some time pondering the choice of veganism vs meat eating vs vegetarianism in the past.

I agree it is important to examine one’s emotional reactions. That is how, ultimately, I left behind religion. And that experience is what colors my view and provides the answer to my reaction.

To wit, one of the (many) things that I chafed against was people dictating to me what my morality must be as if they are the final arbiters of absolute morality. It is one thing to disagree, to share your own morality, to state your beliefs. To state what the other person must believe, that is what I find annoying.

It’s an interesting topic because one then has to ask, what is the difference between this and me arguing with a bigot? I believe very strongly that people are all on equal footing and of equal regardless of skin color, ethnicity, gender identity / expression, etc.

So how do I engage with racists…and why? E.g., Is it to change their minds? I mean that would be nice. But really it is to make certain their viewpoint never goes unchallenged.

And if I am morally reprehensible to a vegan, does that give them the right to challenge me? Yes. Does it give them the right to tell me what my morality must be? Hmm. If yes then I have the right to tell bigots what their morality must be too and I haven’t grounds for complaint if someone does this to me. If no, then I may need to engage differently with bigots.

Now I could argue “but I am right about bigotry” and “being omnivorous isn’t actually wrong” … But that’s from my perspective. I’m trying to step out of my belief system to look at this.

It isn’t the scientific facts that are an issue; I am aware of them and don’t dispute them. I have no qualms about reducing or eliminating most of the meat industry based on its environmental impacts. And I do wish to reduce my meat consumption on those grounds, not on moral grounds.

In Henry Ford's abandoned city of Fordlândia (reddthat.com)

Henry Ford dreamed of establishing Fordlândia, a rubber plantation city in Brazil, to ensure a steady supply of rubber for his automobiles. He invested millions to build the city from scratch, and included luxuries for the workers such as an 18-hole golf course and a dance hall....
