I have a hypothesis that adolescents staying up late and the elderly waking up early is an an evolutionary holdover from a time when someone needed to be awake to watch for lion attacks.

Works great on all kinds of infestations, too. I had wasps in my siding that were getting in my house and stinging me in my sleep. Doused them with DE and they haven't come back.

Leavened products, especially chemically leavened ones like cakes, need the oven to be hot when they go in for proper texture. The heat creates steam which means more and bigger bubbles, and the baking powder also reacts better at high temperatures, producing even more bubbles. And these bubbles need to start growing before the protein in the flour starts to set, otherwise they stay small and you get a dense texture.

It’s less about the land claims than it is about the CCP’s laughable rejection of reality

Finding room for carry-on baggage has become 'the Hunger Games' of air travel, analyst says (www.cbc.ca)

Airline industry insiders say passengers have become carried away with carry-on baggage, leading to costly delays. That’s prompting calls for changes to how airplanes charge for baggage, with some discount airlines like Sunwing and Spirit already beginning to flip the fee structure so passengers pay for the privilege of...

That would help but a lot of folks check bags so they don’t have to wait and the carousel and because airlines lose bags all the time.

It feels crazy to me. ALL the bags have barcodes. The barcodes tell them where to go. How in the entirety of hell do you scan a bag for Chicago and put it on a flight for Philly?!

I never really liked watches to begin with. I sweat a lot and it would always smell funky under my band. The last watch I had I got a machine washable nylon band to prevent this and had to wash it every other day.

If I do that, what’s the point of the smart watch?

If we all did it, yes. But there's no way we'd get enough people to do it to outweigh all the people who vote party line.

I taught my kids how to do it and for a while they'd tell each other to binary four off

young voters say social media to blame for divisions in the u.s (thehill.com)

A Quinnipiac University poll asked U.S. registered voters to select one of four options to blame for the divisions in the country. Overall, 35 percent blamed social media, 32 percent blamed political leaders, 28 percent blamed cable news channels and only 1 percent blamed other countries.

How does attraction feel like to you, mentally, physically and emotionally?

It was sometime in early 2022 that I found myself reading a few romance novels. I remember being mildly annoyed about how most of the books had instant chemistry/attraction as part of the plot. Then I suddenly found myself wondering, how do I feel if and when I feel attraction? I think I have probably never felt instant...

Semi-Hemi-Demigod,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

For me it's two things: The Tingle and The Fizz.

The Tingle is an intellectual and emotional. If I see an attractive person do something nice, or they're extremely competent about something, especially if it's something I don't know a lot about, there's a flutter in my heart and a tingly electrical feeling in my brain. If they keep doing these things and don't do unattractive things, maybe I'll work up the nerve to ask them out.

The Fizz is more primal. James May explains it well.

I imagine the ban on rainwater collection is from before the war, and I imagine there are similar laws in Israel.

There’s lots to be mad at the Israelis for doing. We don’t need to make things up. This article on water in Gaza makes a good point:

A graphic representation of the unfair restrictions is that while many Jewish settlements have swimming pools, Palestinians in “Area C” of the West Bank are not allowed cisterns for collecting rainwater.

I would really love a version of Calibre that ran in a web browser instead of a desktop app

Semi-Hemi-Demigod,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

vnc-style web interface

That's still not what I'm looking for. What's wrong with good old HTML?

Semi-Hemi-Demigod,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

I tried that but you need a Calibre library first, and that requires using Calibre AFAIK

Semi-Hemi-Demigod,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

All the other services I have running are on a server in my closet, which I access with a web browser from other devices. Calibre needing to run on my workstation is a big shift in that workflow. Especially because all the rest of my media is sitting on that server.

Also, UX of open source desktop apps is… lacking. They don’t look good, and they don’t feel good to use. But that might be because I’m picky and spoiled by decades of using a Mac.

I definitely don’t want more Electron apps. About the only things I want to run locally is a browser, a text editor, and a terminal.
