The original Doom and Doom II still unironically kick arse. There are updated engines that allow fancy things like looking up and down the the mouse but other than that (and maybe making the graphics prettier) there's very little you could do to improve those games
Most of us in Lemmy know the importance of privacy and owning your devices in a big tech owned world (me included) but for once I thought to make the opposite question and ask if there are products by them that you actually use and enjoy them....
The thing I like most about Steam is that games under Linux just work, for the most part. I don't play AAA games online multiplayer which is, I believe, where that falls down, but other than that it really is pretty seamless
I've got a few reddit coins from when someone gave me gold. Is there a way I can fuck over reddit or promote the fediverse using them before they time out?
"The best time to plant a tree is fifty years ago. The second best time is right now" - essentially don't worry about what you could have done better, or what could have been, make now and the future as good as you can
and
"If you don't fall off occasionally, you're not trying hard enough" - originally told to me in the context of learning to windsurf (I still can't windsurf), but applicable in a lot of areas. This doesn't mean try to fall off, it means failure is a natural part of growth, not something to be shunned
A lot of us are pretty new to the fediverse and we've arrived just in time to grapple with what is easily the biggest federation/defederation controversy ever to hit it. I've put this thread together to hopefully help communicate some of the more complex ideas that we're trying to get our heads around....
Oh look a troll. On the off chance you're not a troll, the idea that you took the word "transphobia" as an attack on you personally says a lot more about you than anything else. Please go and read what Jesus actually said, or the closest we can get (by which I mean read the Gospels minus the apologetics)
Honestly Linux is no harder to use than Windows nowadays, although it is different in places so there's some "muscle memory" to overcome. I'm the opposite though, I cannot find anything under windows any more without checking in three wrong places first!
Yup, it literally canny comply with EU GDPR requirements. Sadly, while we theorecticaly have nearly the same laws grandfathered in in the UK, they're not enforced post brexit
Yes this has been asked and answered a million times I’m sure. There is a plethora of ‘top ten distros for Linux gaming’ lists out there and the majority of posts I can find on That Other Site seem to devolve into “every distro can do games”....
In addition to the possible business threat, forcing OpenAI to identify its use of copyrighted data would expose the company to potential lawsuits. Generative AI systems like ChatGPT and DALL-E are trained using large amounts of data scraped from the web, much of it copyright protected. When companies disclose these data sources...
The training process of LLMs is to copy the source material word for word. It’s instructed to plagiarize during the training process. The copyrighted material are possibly in one way or another embedded into the model itself.
No it isn't. That;s not how neural networks work, like at all
In machine learning, there’s always this concern whether the model is actually learning patterns, or if it’s just memorizing the training data. Same applies to LLMs.
It's learning patterns. It's not memorising training data. Again, not how the system works at all
Can LLMs recite entire pieces of work? Who knows?
No. No they can't.
Does it count as copyright infringement if it does so? Possibly.
That'd be one for the lawyers were it to ever come up, but it won't
Gnome does anything but get out of the way! It forces you to work its way or get stuffed. Also calling minimalistic and extensible is a joke compared to KDE (extensibility) or literally anything else (minimalism)
Not that I'm particularly against that - quite the opposite, in fact. But I'm wondering if anyone sees, or had seen a path to social and climate recovery/progress that could occur without first eradicating the class of people who most enjoy the present status quo.
It's not people who have more than you, it's people who have more than everyone else combined! At one point (not sure of current numbers) SEVEN people had more wealth between tham than the poorest fifty percent.
That's 7 people vs 350 000 000 000 people.
Are any of those seven people really more than fifty billion times more valuable than a homeless child in Delhi?
Hey, I’m not sure if it’s allowed to ask for help on hunting for specific files but this doubles up as a question about the best place to get books....
Krita. It's quite resource intensive and the UI has been ported directly from the desktop rather than being optimised for mobile, but it works, and it's free and open source
I ran Windowmaker as my primary WM for many years back in the day. now I run KDE, but as a holdover I want the primary taskbar vertical rather than horizontal. GSDE is somewhat interesting for that reason but I doubt I'll actually install it for quite some time yet, I've got comfy with KDE
I'm getting really tired of trying to run away from big tech, only to be ensnared again by the greed and/or naivety of sites who ultimately cave to the whims of big tech....
Threads is available in the UK, the UK is not in the EU any more. We theoretically have data protection laws grandfathered in from the EU but they're not enforced
It's at times like this that I am reminded how lucky I am to have had such great parents. I mean I made it to 41 before even beginning to suspect I had adhd, but in the 80s if you didn't literally run around screaming all the time it couldn't be adhd! But my parents always treated me as a person and didn't do any of that shit - for that I am grateful!
I had a couple classmates that pretended to be vampires back in elementary and middle school. They’d pretend their Koolaid was blood, complain about the sunlight, and bite their friends a lot. Not enough to draw blood, though. I haven’t kept up with most of them, but one guy is a teacher now. He seems pretty normal.
Whether you started with a 2600 and a joystick in your hand, an N64 with a blistered palm or building your first PC in your teens, what is that one video game you've played at some point that to this day sits at the top of your list.
