HONOR X8b: Risk-free Dimming & 108MP Camera (www.hihonor.com)

The main highlights of this phone are the display, camera and the large onboard 512GB storage space. The processor used is unfortunately, the snapdragon 680. That won’t be lag free in web browsing and will have hang in heavy tasks. They should’ve used a better snapdragon processor or a dimensity for improved performance.

So…it’s an iPhone clone, with the stupid pill-shaped camera hole and everything. Gross.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Americans with Android are stuck using SMS half the time because Americans with iPhones are literally holding us back. If it wasn’t for iMessage, we would have ditched SMS years ago, but when you suggest to an iPhone user that they use something other than iMessage their head explodes, apparently.

I just bought an RX 6600. Far from their most powerful GPU, but it feels good being on Team Red again. Having an AMD processor with an Nvidia GPU made me feel dirty.

I really appreciate @firefox adding the ability to enable custom search engines for searching with the address bar. As someone who just types my searches direct to the address bar, not having the option to use my search engine of choice was a problem that's now solved!

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

No it’s not new, I think they were just trying to say they like the feature.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah it could have been phrased better. But, no harm done.

PeachMan,

Doesn’t seem to have swipe typing, which is important for me. Otherwise it’s great.

It’s pretty common for companies like that to advertise that their app is 100% open source, but then stop short of guaranteeing anything beyond that. In PIA’s case, I would point out that their infrastructure (the servers that they use to route your traffic) are closed, so they could be doing literally anything in there. Their desktop client being open source doesn’t actually do much to guarantee your privacy.

If you want real transparency, Mullvad is the only real option: mullvad.net/en/help/open-source

Having said that, I personally use PIA because it’s cheaper and I don’t care enough.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Right, you can’t be 100% sure, but there are measures that they can take to make you trust them a bit more. For example, I believe Mullvad runs systems in RAM and keeps no records of who uses what. You don’t even have to give them your email address; they don’t want it. And they submit to regular audits (provided you trust the auditors).

Also, if the client matters, then don’t use their client. Use the OpenVPN client instead.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

I mostly use a VPN for torrents, and not much else honestly. And Mullvad isn’t very friendly to torrenters (for good reasons), they don’t allow port forwarding.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

LOL bad timing on that recommendation. They just got bought by a company that puts ads in everything. Supposedly there’s already a fork called Fossify though.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Rather then committing a year to a service, do a monthly subscription until you find something you’re happy with. Then switch to annual billing if you want. I wouldn’t continue paying for a VPN that doesn’t work well. I’m personally pretty happy with PIA.

As others have mentioned, Bitwarden is a very good password manager that has a very full-featured free tier. And its paid tiers are very cheap if you decide to upgrade.

Use Firefox and Ublock Origin, friend. There are specific “annoyances” filters in Ublock Origin that take care of most (but not all) cookie banners.

Edit: turns out you need to customize your filters to get this one to stop: lemmy.world/comment/5775350

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, you’re right, when I reset my site cache for steamdeckhq.com it comes up with that cookie window again.

Luckily, Ublock Origin still has you covered! Click the UBO icon and click the little lightning bolt, starts “element zapper” mode. That allows you to create your own custom filters, just by clicking things on a page that you don’t like.

I was able to remove this cookie window with the zapper. If you accidentally zap something you want to keep, you can go to UBO settings and look for it in the “My Filters” section. Each new filter is noted with a timestamp so you know which ones you created today.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

You’re right, but there’s still hope! Use the element zapper to get rid of it: lemmy.world/comment/5775350

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah fair enough, if a website is going to be this annoying then you could argue we just shouldn’t go there.

But I still want to spread the gospel of Ublock Origin where I can. The zapper feature can be a little finicky, depending on how a site is structured. It helps to move the mouse around and try to find a spot that covers the entire area that you want to get rid of.

PeachMan, (edited )
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Element picker is a little less user friendly, you pick elements and then you have to decide what to do with them. I think you have to click “create” for each element that you “pick”. Element zapper is the simpler tool, you just click things and they go away.

GrayJay is still working.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

The amount of FOSS snobbery in this community is hilarious. You typed that comment on a proprietary device with proprietary hardware, probably running proprietary software (unless you’re on Linux, truly using ALL open source stuff, including RISC-V hardware, FOSS browser and network stack). But God forbid an app is just source available instead of truly FOSS. Gasp! The horror! You should complain about it using one of the completely closed-source Android/iPhone apps that you use every day.

LMAO

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Greedy? Lmao the app is free to use. My point is that you make compromises elsewhere with proprietary hardware and software, just like everybody else here, but you decide to draw the line at GrayJay just because it’s only source available? That’s silly, you’re just making yourself feel good with holier-than-thou bullshit.

Also, for the record, I’ve tried all the fully FOSS alternatives and they all have crap UX. GrayJay just works, like a good app should, and you can plug multiple accounts in from different platforms. It’s an excellent product, and it shows what excellent developers are capable of doing in a short time. It’s impressively stable for an app this young. But I guess you’ll never see for yourself because it’s “proprietary trash”. Lol.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, I get the preference. But these people are acting like GrayJay is somehow worse than completely closed-source software that they use every day. It’s obviously not as good as FOSS, but being able to audit the code makes it a lot more useful and safe than your average closed-source software.

If I had said something about ReVanced, which is a FOSS project that only repackages a completely closed-source app (YouTube) then nobody would have said anything negative. But because I mentioned GrayJay instead, I get gatekeeping responses about “proprietary trash”.

It’s so stupid.

What? Plex is not one of those open source, self-hosted, privacy-centric services. Plex can do whatever the hell Plex wants with your watch history, because you agreed to their broad terms of service that said exactly that when you signed up. You chose to run your traffic and authentication through Plex servers because it’s convenient, not for privacy reasons.

If you don’t like it, use Jellyfin. I’m personally looking into moving, as Plex seems to be getting slowly shittier.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know how you could read that and think I’m defending them.

I’m just telling you how the world works. If you want real privacy, you need to PAY somebody with a rock-solid privacy agreement or fully host it yourself. Plex is neither of those things. Remember, if something that costs money to run is free, then YOU are the product.

@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

First multiplayer impromptu SteamDeck session. (lemmy.world)

I’m at a friend’s house for the night and was invited to an among us group. Installed among us and discord, had everything working (after a restart) within 10 minutes. I was shocked that simply adding a keybind for mute/deafen just worked. Yet another “it’s just a computer” moment. I’ll have to get that discord...

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

How did you get discord installed? Last time I tried, it was buggy and crashed. But that was over a year ago I think.

Decent YouTube client?

I’m looking for an app to browse YouTube using multiple accounts. It has to be convenient to switch between multiple accounts, and keep them separate. I’ve struggled to find a YT client that does this well, most of them seem to advertise “Use YouTube without an account”. I’d look on the app store but frankly the play...

Unfortunately I haven’t been impressed with the TRULY open source options. There are two KINDA open source options that I would personally say are much better:

  • ReVanced is sorta open source, but it’s basically a tool to modify the YouTube app, which is not open source.
  • GrayJay is source available, not truly FOSS. But it’s an excellent app and has been stable in my experience (especially impressive as it’s only a few months old).
PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Sounds like it’s pretty standard, benign stuff. Luckily FF is open source, so if this freaks you out, then try one of the more private forks like LibreWolf. You won’t see these same connections there.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

I think either choice is fine. But I would take the free upgrade if I were you.

Absolutely, these are the numbers for Q3. They fucked themselves near the END of Q3. I’ll be very interested to see their Q4 numbers.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

This makes perfect sense to me. If you plug your phone in to your car and give it permission to access all your shit, then it will access all your shit, and store it locally so that it doesn’t have to re-download all your shit every time. If you don’t want your car to do that, then don’t plug in your phone and give it permission to do that.

Having said that, it is terrifying how much of our personal data modern cars collect. We should be fighting that, but this specific case was not the way to do that.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, but from what I’m seeing, the article wasn’t about them selling it. It was about them storing it, which only happens after you plug your phone in and agree to their terms.

PeachMan,

What? FUCK.

PeachMan,

Credit Karma also doesn’t have bill tracking, which is the main feature I use with Mint. It’s just a fucking credit score tool lol.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

I’m actually trying PocketGuide, just started the 7 day trial. I’m really impressed so far, it seems better than Mint and the annual price is only $35 (which isn’t free, but it’s cheaper than most of the alternatives). I plugged in all my checking and credit card accounts and it’s working great. It already told me that I’m spending too much money and I need to re-do my budget. 😂

It has a free version but you can only plug in two accounts so it’s pretty useless (unless two is enough for you).

why aren't r/piratedgames here? I thought they migrated to lemmy too

Not to start a war, but I think the place here is better for free discussion of games piracy. the lemmy community they site on their subreddit is literally dead, has just one or two posts. It would have been good if a rival community to r/piratedgames appears here on dbzer0 too, I mean r/piracy is still there, but this place is...

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah pirating games is way sketchier than pirating movies. I used to do it when I was a kid, but nowadays I know enough to avoid random .exe’s. That’s basically just volunteering to be a part of a botnet.

Also, most of the games I’m personally interested in are online multiplayer titles. Playing pirated games online can be very difficult or basically impossible, depending on the game.

Game piracy certainly isn’t dead, but there are valid reasons that it’s less popular.

Yeah this groomer needs to be fired, I assume they have no training or experience. This is a pretty bad thing to do to certain breeds.

Edit: looking at the context in the photo, this is either a really amateur home groomer or somebody just shaving their own dog. The caption might have been added later.

PeachMan,

They’re bigger AND heavier. Small vehicle manufacturers still use lithium ion batteries because it lets them cram more range into a limited battery space, without being too heavy. And the fact that a lithium ion battery goes bad in a few years is just icing on the cake. Many people will just buy a new scooter rather than replacing the battery, so the manufacturer makes more money.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

You’ve been out of the game for too long, friend. We have Lidarr now…among all the other tools mentioned here.

PeachMan,
@PeachMan@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, you have to find your own trackers, that’s always been the case. And Lidarr does help with renaming and organizing files, yes. I’d argue that this person is making things harder by searching for FLAC files specifically, which is unnecessary. Most people don’t care about lossless, so it’s harder to find. Makes perfect sense to me.

Also, check out Soulseek. It’s a proprietary app that doesn’t use torrents, but it’s P2P and it’s very popular.

EU Alternatives (dasprive.be)

To escape from the big corporations of the USA, as a user we have two options, either to use OpenSource alternatives, although not all of them they are free of influences from Google, MS, etc., or using products and services of European companies, which in general are rather more aimed at protect privacy (GDPR), although only a...
