I really appreciate @firefox adding the ability to enable custom search engines for searching with the address bar. As someone who just types my searches direct to the address bar, not having the option to use my search engine of choice was a problem that's now solved!

Crul,

If you use the address bar frequently, you may be interested in JS bookmarklets with params:

@Crul Thanks for the share!

sculd,

Same. Things feel so much smoother now. I can set default search engine to a more private one while also using Google search easily when I need it.

Moonrise2473,

I’m not using Chrome since 2008 but I think it can be done in every browser

I guess on Firefox is easier to add, by right clicking on the search field while chromium browsers require to add it in the settings?

Or maybe you mean the small search icons on the bottom of the address bar, click those to change the search engine

That feature maybe is unique, or maybe Vivaldi has it?

HouseWolf,

Is that not a thing in other browsers? I haven’t used Chrome since 2010 maybe, but I still remember it being a thing back then?

baked_tea,

Well not knowing that is expected from someone who is trying to use twitter tags on lemmy

everett,

They actually posted this to Mastodon… I think. Fediverse is weird.

baked_tea,

Ah if that’s the case I’m the joke

mayo,

It is in chrome, but implemented differently. Firefox actually does it better since you can save them as bookmarks

Cwilliams,

I think it’s more intuitive in Chrome, but much more powerful in Firefox. Personally I didn’t know that you could do this in Firefox until today

Boomkop3,

Wait that wasn’t a thing yet? That’s great tho!

No it’s not new, I think they were just trying to say they like the feature.

overat8,

They should remove the words “adding the”. So the sentence would be “I really appreciate Firefox ability to enable custom search”. The way they phrase it sounds like Firefox has recently added the custom search engine function.

Yeah it could have been phrased better. But, no harm done.

WarmSoda,

Considering how the title came out I wouldn’t be surprised if they think it is new.

Boomkop3,

Oh, alright. It is nice!

@Boomkop3 Evidently, there was a way to do it but I could never figure out how. Now, you just go to a search engine you want to make as a default, open up the address bar drop-down for that search engine and there should be a button at the bottom of the drop-down menu that has the favicon for that search engine with a plus icon. Then, from there, you just set it as the default in the way you would with the built-in options!

Boomkop3,

Nice! User interface design fixes can be the most impactful sometimes
