I’m autistic, non binary, have ex family members that kind of home cooked their own cult, I’m an atheist now. there’s plenty of emotional abuse in the ex family. Went to a Christian private school (different denomination than the cult), I’m intellectually gifted and chronically ill. There’s some ADHD ex family members thrown in, I’ve spent some time I an African country and my current bestie is my cat. Currently using all my skills from studying a life science to improve my chronic illness situation.

I think there’s some demographics that might be interested. Still not sure whether to actually write it.

I have had several experiences with therapists ranging from atrocious and potentially life threatening to merely unhelpful. I know therapy can be an important and very helpful tool tho. I’d be most interested in your perspective in how therapists can abuse their position of power but also be a force of good.

There’s a nice saying in the community of people who heal from childhood abuse: don’t set yourself on fire to keep others warm. I always found it to be a powerful and succinct way of describing toxic people pleasing.

In Germany plastic straws are forbidden these days. There’s straws made of metal or wood still. Can’t comment on the larger question tho. I’ve never used straws to begin with.

Chronically ill person checking in to mention people with my autoimmune disorder died a slow painful death in the past or ate pig thyroid. And people with endometriosis just spent their days in intense agony (some/many still do because current medical treatment doesn’t work for them).

Huh, neat. I’ve heard of pasta straws in private use but an Italian restaurant, that’s cool. Yeah wooden and metal straws get cleaned. Tho wooden straws would eventually be burned I assume. And metal maybe remelted?

I had a FP2 that lasted maybe twice as long as an unfair phone. Played a game on it that seemed to be too much for the processor/RAM. I bought a FP3 just after the new camera for it came out. It’s starting to show similsr signs of processor/RAM issues. Thing is I haven’t used the FP3 nearly as much and all my gaming is on tablets now. I’m unsure if I can justify buying another heavily expensive phone like this. Maybe a used one for me instead?

I do love the repairability tho and how it tries to be Eco and socio friendly. Installing lineageOS was super easy and I love not having google know my every move (I get adverts in Greek and … Russian? Now as well as stuff for Muslims, I think they really don’t track me well anymore.) It’s probably also the only smart phone customer service who understands and was helpful when I wanted to know how to responsibly deal with a broken cover for the FP2.

They wanted to switch over to a subscription model. I assume many people like me who used to use infinity just bailed.

Edit: I actually dug up the source for this. It still worked for non subscribers until now. Apparently that will stop on august 30th. The headline is misleading. Starting in September it will be the aforementioned subscription model.

Good to hear an update on the issues that blind moderators face even if it is not a very positive one. And of course they came up with fancy stickers and flairs for helpful mods for a community where Admins are supposed to help mods. That’s what the mods really needed!

That’s part of what made reddit interesting tho. Having these niche subs that still had a reasonable amount of activity. If they loose that this is the one thing they had over lemmy for me personally. I’ve never been particularly attached to say r/pics but r/aspiememes was the bees knees. They are coming to lemmy by now.

They made noises about wanting to change the trans law as soon as they got elected and formed the coalition. The longer the process dragged on the less optimistic I was. And I’m now at the point where I wonder if I should change my legal gender at all. It’s not like people suddenly act like non binary people exist anyway.

I also use queer. I’m agender, I don’t indentify with any gender and I’ve given up figuring out whether the term “trans” applies to me or not. But I’m queer. That’s nice and easy to use in conversation.

If it helps I also was firmly over 30 when I figured it out.

Yeah there’s certainly a lot of trans related things I discuss with my binary trans friend. Dysphoria most notably. But he wants to be seen as a gender that already exists (and is exposed to more danger for it) while I want to be seen as a category people don’t have in their minds at all which brings it’s own issues.

Figuring these kind of things out mid life certainly is a process isn’t it? I’m glad I also have younger cis friends who are just much more open to all sorts of queer identities. But it’s still hard for me the discuss at all IRL.

Those who are against iOS and Apple in general, have you tried their devices lately?

I am dissapointed in my peers. For years I have always been told to stay away from Apple devices and the company in general. However, no one who said that actually used their devices, or used them but not recently (some had like iPhone 4s in the past). Their knowledge was always based on some 3rd hand impressions or internet...

I personally am not the biggest apple fan but I find it downright disturbing how your “friends” are so adamant about this. My own dislike stems from overinflated prices, working conditions in the electronics sector in general and apple in particular (I have a fairphone and a headache about tablet use…) and waaaaaaay back I had an iPad that wasn’t compatible with a windows/linux machine.

Doesn’t mean apple doesn’t have their good points, you are most firmly entitled to decide yourself what you spend money on and anything else wouldn’t be decent behaviour in my opinion. Let alone how I’d treat my friends. Stating an opinion is nice and healthy, what they do… Not so much.

Yeah. I was reminded of the sports “debate” as well. Chess is one of the sports where you wonder why they have a gender division in the first place. Are they afraid of loosing to trans people or women (cis and trans)?

I’m especially fascinated by the gendered difference in whether you get to keep your titles. So transitioning one way means you keep your chess muscles? But not the other? Transness itself isn’t the problem then?? I’d love to hear them attempt to justify that rule.

Why is there so much hate against children here?

It was the same on Reddit, people openly say disturbing things against children. What prompted me to post this is someone saying that babies should be put in overhead bins inside airplanes. Even if they’re joking, this is a disgusting thing to say. I won’t say that about anything else....

I’ve been born to people who didn’t really want kids. I admit this colours my perceptive n greatly but yes I’d never condemn a new life to not being wanted/going into the foster system. The damage that you do to someone by not having a good caregiver is immense and I dearly dearly wish I had been aborted. I think it’s sad that so little of the debate centers around the needs of the child once it is born.
