It’s still unreasonable to expect the people who are actively oppressed to cater to him. If you have the energy sure. But otherwise that’s another expression of privilege. If cishet men can only sympatise with each other through incel forums maybe they themselves need to be better.

I’ve been in your place too about having next to no social life and jeering to decide if my identity or my connections were worth keeping because I couldn’t have both. It doesn’t help that I belong to multiple minorities. In the end I decided I can’t get a new identity and nobody who discriminates against who I am can be called a friend. Some years down the line I have a very loyal cat who has never once attempted to explain to me that she really know more about autism than I do or that my gender isn’t real or that I really need to go to a church. It’s touch and go with human friendships but it’s nice to have the space in my life for nurturing relationships.

My choice isn’t for everyone but I hope this can give you some food for thought.

I’ve been on a mini quest to try and get my Twitter account banned without doing anything strictly against the ToS and my first idea was to start messing with people who say something completely untrue, then refuse to back down under any circumstances. But that got me thinking, is it okay? I’m not outright insulting/cyber...

Who still has a rift in their family due to differing opinions over Covid?

My parents have always been left-wing hippies and entertained the odd conspiracy theory, but during the pandemic they got lost down YouTube rabbit holes and bought into Q-Anon and anti-vax ideas. They still don’t believe Covid is real (even though they blatantly had it…)....

I had a somewhat comparable thing happen. A sub blew up in a modgate. The mod claimed the user base was behaving like children and put us in a timeout (they locked the sub for a while). Then they took away any and all mechanisms for holding the mods accountable. So similar to spez’ approach in spirit.

The users who were upset eventually formed their own sub reddit, the original sub blocked the hell out of users and mentions of the new sub. Eventually the mods had an internal issue and … Came to the new sub to complain about other mods. After a while some newer mods from original sub kept coming over promising every rything and anything was in the works to improve things.

Initial reaction was distrusting, cautious, somewhat constructive and mostly friendly to the newer mods and rather unfriendly to the mods who tried to bring their internal drama to our new space. Eventually newer mods promises went nowhere and then the user base became A LOT more jaded towards newer mods.

In this example people had been shadow banned and abused in modmail, blocked without reason and so on. So the mods had personally and intentionally hurt many users. For reddit the scale is bigger and the pain for most of us isn’t that personal. So I’d hope the reception would be slightly warmer.

Do you live in a bigger city? If so there’s probably some indie filmmakers/actors and so forth you could search for and connect with. In my city there’s even a festival that shoots short movies in 60 hours. If nothing else maybe there’s a screening of short movies in your local cinema and that crowd might have good collaborators for you.

I’m really fascinated at how in the lead up to this they consistently alienated moderators and users so into reddit that they looked up 3PAs. Like they really went ham on the users that make their site work and go all shocked pikachu when people leave/disengage/protest. That’s a level of social incompetence I can’t conceptualise when the stakes are this high.

have you watch cgp Grey’s video called rules for rulers? I think therein lies a lot of answers. the TL;DW version is that rulers need to keep their other top ministers happy lest they revolt. they have no such strong incentive to cater to the common people. I suspect while keeping the ministers happy they engage in either illegal or not entirely legal actions at least once in a while. indeed to rise as a ruler you probably can’t be too moral either.

so of course they don’t want to take away their tools that help them stay in power. I think the solution lies in what we accept from leaders in terms of amoral conduct. and there’s the conundrum. this needs to be a society wide thing where the vast majority recognize blamrnshifting, gaslighting, moving the goalposts and so on. and don’t accept to be manipulated and lied to that way. most people simply don’t care. and most people also use these exact same manipulation tools in their life as well. which in turn means they don’t want that taken away either.

that’s essentially exactly what we see play out in reddit too. most people can’t be bothered to act on spez’s selfishness. and the mods who by rights should be bothered cling to hard to their own little fiefdoms of absolute power.

yeah I think the apps just aren’t there yet. I used connect for lemmy and today I’ve installed lemming which has the edit and block functions but looks clunky. can’t have it all I suppose.

I think for written words in a professional context it’s very similar. but yeah swiss or high German that’s just one of those totally not made up words that exists to troll German speakers. 🤣

Does anybody feel like the quality of reddit has already dropped massively? (kbin.social)

I see a lot of comments from bootlickers on how the protests are dumb and stupid and dont work and engagement metrics are still holding but the quality of posts and comments has noticeably depreciated imo. So much so that whenever I visit the site Im actually shocked at how bad it is.

shit behaviour is one thing the mods are another. I’ve seen plenty of communities on reddit where the users hated the mods and eventually left and formed their own sub. the fediverse already encourages multiple parallel communities for the same topic. so i hope we can get around the worst of reddit by seeking out and creating healthier communities. Leave the power mods behind.

I think some just take a bit longer to leave the communities b they build behind and still try to fix reddit. there will probably be a longer exodus of mods when they realise after July 1st that their communities aren’t the same they used to.

of course there will always be bootlickers as well.

The thing is, they need to be accessible or they are liable for lawsuits if I understood it right. They took all the labour TPAs do in this regard for granted. So much so they weren’t even aware it was necessary and had regulations in the first place.

Profitability needs somebody who understands what their product is and what kind of legal requirements they need to fulfill. So even under the profitability lens their behavior is destructive.

my personal hypothesis is that the empathic and constructive people are exactly the ones driven away by the money hungry deconstructing antics that reddit leadership currently display.
