I’m confused. Is that not where we are right now?

Where do you get your gaming news?

I was wondering where everyone went to get news, reviews, trailers, etc. IGN has always left a bad taste in my mouth with their seemingly bias reviews. I used to go to the gaming, games, Xbox, and a couple other smaller niche subreddits to gather the vast majority of the info. Now I’d like some advice on what others favorite...

I’m the lead mod over on !ps5 and I am also a mod on !nintendo

I use an RSS reader app/website plugged into all the various news sites for gaming on all consoles and PC that a browse a few times a day. I post a lot of the news I like to the communities I mod. If you’re looking for an app, I recommend an RSS reader (there are a lot to choose from so I would dabble in a few and see what you like).

If you’re looking for gaming centric communities you probably already know where to find them on here, but resetera has good discussions as well. If you want to look for other communities across lemmy instances you can use lemmyverse.net/communities (be sure to set your home instance with the “home” icon so all links open correctly).

I like Ars. For videos/reviews I personally like Skillup, ACG, and Eurogamer mostly, also digital foundry. Plus the official channels for the various consoles.

If only they would spin back up their photo library feature they cut from plex into it’s own app so I can remove my reliability on google photos. I feel like so many people rely on streaming music, but this is still good for those that still maintain an offline library. I think photos would be such a better sell, since icloud and google users or anyone externally hosting their photos could easily download them from those services, and then immediately start self hosting.

Use APK mirror to download a clean APK and then patch it with revanced. They can’t send you a compiled one because you need to use your reddit account to set up a custom app to get a unique API key that’s just for you

Here is a guide I wrote previously on how I did this step by step for reddit sync. It’ll be similar for the other apps but I haven’t tried any of those.

  1. Uninstall reddit sync from your phone.
  2. Go here and download a clean redditsync apk file (click the blue “DOWNLOAD APK” Button) This is the APK I used: apkmirror.com/…/sync-for-reddit-v23-05-031718-2-a…
  3. Go here and download Revanced Manager APK file and install it. qithub.com/revanced/revanced-manager
  4. Go to reddit.com/prefs/aps and go to the bottom where it says “Create Application” (you have to login here to do this)
  5. Name it whatever you want, select “installed app” and under redirect uri, type redditsync/auth then click “create app”
  6. After you create the app, you should see it under the title “Developed Applications”. Under the name you gave it you should see a random string of numbers, letters, and symbols. This is your client ID. You will use this in the next step.
  7. Using a file manager on your phone, navigate to /sdcard/ and create a txt file titled “reddit_client_id_revanced.txt”
  8. Open the text file you just created and paste in your Client ID from step 7. Make sure it is on the top line of the text file with no spaces or indents before or after the ID.
  9. Open Revanced Manager on your phone. Select Patcher on the bottom, click “select application”, click the “storage” button on the bottom right. Navigate to the location where you downloaded the clean redditsync apk in step 2.
  10. When you select the apk file in step 10, you should see that it has selected 2 patches (change Oauth client ID and Disable ads). Click "Patch’ in the bottom right.
  11. Allow the patching to occur and read everything on the screen to check for errors. If the Oauth failed to patch, revisit step 8.
  12. Click install. Google play will likely warn you, expand the option and click “install anyway”, if it asks to scan the app, decline scanning.
  13. Launch the application, run through the setup and re-log into your account if you want.
  14. Profit

A fix for this was introduced in 0.18 and another one in 0.18.1. Version 0.18.1 is in release client 4 now, and lemmy.world just updated yesterday. Lemmy ml is still on 0.18.0 and doesn’t have the 2nd fix yet. There are likely to be many causes to this, but consensus seems to be that federation has drastically improved since world upgraded to 0.18.1rc-4.

So, what to do? Just be patient. These are growing pains and known issues being tracked by devs and admins across instances. If Lemmy.ml and Lemmy.world wanted to defederate, they would do exactly that, instead of some silly shadow-defederation as you’re suggesting.

If you want to follow the issue on GitHub, here is the link:

I agree. I noticed these issues start when lemmy.ml made their server upgrade awhile back when things were still on 0.17.4. Ruud (lemmy.world admin) mentioned in his pinned post some specifics that he had to do in order to get it working. I trust that these patch work solutions are being communicated back to the devs and trust that they are working on it. The good news is that they needed the traffic to Lemmy to uncover these issues in order to then fix them. All in due time.

Reminds me of another website a long time ago that succeeded due to a lively and active 3rd party development scene. I wonder whatever happened to them?

Is lemmy.ml partially blocking /kbin instances?

A post on kbinMeta states that “Lemmy.ml is blocking all inbound ActivityPub requests from /kbin instances.” More details here, but the theory is that – rather than defederating – lemmy.ml returns a 403 ‘access denied’ message in response to any inbound requests from a user agent with “kbinBot” in the string....

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

I'm not sure if this specifically applies, but there are federation issues happening across multiple instances.

Many issues have to do with a mismatch in Lemmy BE versions. Lemmy.ml is on 0.18, others are on 0.17.4 waiting for Capcha support to come in 0.18.1. BE 0.18 replaced websockets with http, so it's a substantial update. How this works with kbin specifically I do not know, but things are in flux.

Additionally there is this issue:

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3101

Which according to the devs is related to this other issue that has been fixed and will also likely come in 0.18.1

https://github.com/LemmyNet/activitypub-federation-rust/pull/52

So, I do not believe this is international. If lemmy.ml didn't want to federate with kbin they would just defederate. With kbin being its own distinct software that is different than Lemmy, these issues are likely due to the drastic change in the last Lemmy update. Things will have to be ironed out between kbin and Lemmy

I'm the creator of kbin.social/m/bestof. I have been 'advertising' the subreddit of it to start getting traction. Despite all my efforts, I'm still the only contributor to my community. How do communities entice their subscribers to post content?

CosmicSploogeDrizzle,
@CosmicSploogeDrizzle@lemmy.world avatar

The nature of your sub also requires that viral Lemmy posts propagate in order to even be considered to belong, which might make it even more difficult to gain traction. I haven't been around that long here but I'm guessing you only have one post...the 3 day poop post lol.

I'll subscribe though!

This is fixed in BE 0.18. Message your instance admin and ask them to update

Very excited to try it out! I applied for the beta.

I really want to like Lemmy

I really want to like lemmy, but it’s difficult. I’m new to all this fediverse thingy, and I might just have old habits and perceptions how things should work but… I keep seeing the same posts more than once, iOS experience is not that good really, sometimes I see dead posts from 2 years ago for some reason, despite having...

It’s a bug that wasnt an issue when the community was smaller. Last I heard they will replace it with a refresh icon that pops up at the top when new posts are available.
