geoma,

or configure your keyboard as English international, dead tildes. You can use ~ with an n to produce an ñ. At least in gnu/Linux that’s easy to do

geoma,

Use newpipe anad install grapheneos on your pixel. I wish i had a pixel to install grapheneos.

geoma,

I think it is true. At least it was last time I checked. Give it a try.

geoma,

Really really please install gnulinux on that child’s computer. He will be grateful for life. If you install windows he might not hate it but he’ll never know what he missed. He will get used to that and will be hard for him in the future to get out of the windows ecosystem. my humble experience installing hundreds of Linux systems: childrenand young are the best adopters. You can do it and ask for help here or on other channels if needed. Maybe go for Linux mint Debian edition.

geoma,

For me this answer is biased. I am a technology teacher and father of five. Had great experience with Linux. Get them on the free ecosystem with no barriers! That’s the best educational environment. Kturtle, gcompris. Krita. Inkscape. Scratch. Godot. Freecad. Gimp. Libresprite/Aseprite. More than enough to keep you busy. I grew up with DOS. The best fuel for me learning computing was trying to make games run. Nowadays everything tries to be so easy and simple and that’s great but sometimes it has an educational drawback. Linux is so much easier for kids than for adults who are already used to windows/Mac. Edit: you could also start with i3wm. That’s what I did with my kids. Of course, the hard part of that is not them learning, but you first learning it so you can show it to them. Have an eye on that and adjust difficulty depending on your time for this project. If you don’t have that much time and willingness to learn yourself, just go KDE plasma or other.

geoma,

My experience is different. I tend to think the billions of dollars spent by microsoft on marketing and lobbies give them some advantage. And a lot of companies use linux more than windows. But of course it depends on your historical experience and choices.

geoma,

Yeah less use Linux. But, even with all of Microsoft lobbies and marketing, a bunch do. For example in the country where I live, the desktop computers of the main bus transport and courier company all use Suse linux. In a school where I worked, all computers also had Linux. It really makes sense in educational contexts.

geoma,

Yeah that’s a sad situation. I suppose you already know about the dangers for the future of our children of not having access to software code and one big company having control over our devices and surveillance capitalism and blah blah blah so I won’t waste your time with that again. Every context is different, every mind is different. Hope you succeed in giving this child what will be best for his future. Good luck and congratulations for your motivation!

geoma,

I try to keep them away from screens as possible until they are 12

geoma,

Yes, I think that tv screens are also harmful for small children. Beyond the content, that is.There are some pretty concluding neurological studies on the subject.

geoma,

Yeah that’s more an ocular thing… for me the main worry, and what I’ve seen in some children, is a tendency towards ASD signs, lack of language/communication skills, easier addiction/hormone reward cycle… that kind of things. It kinda makes sense because screens are so new and there is nothing like that before, so we are not evolutionally (is that a word?) used to this technology I tried to find but couldn’t get to the exact papers I’ve read, but just a search could give some clues: searx.tiekoetter.com/search?q=neurological+effect…

With BlueSky moving towards finally opening up federation, I'm interested in how people feel about it?

Would you be open to the idea of Mastodon, Lemmy, Pixelfed, and other Fediverse platforms adopting the AT protocol in order to federate with it?

If those technical hurdles could be overcome, would you support your instance federating with BlueSky?

Does the same go for other commercially-owned platforms, such as Threads and Tumblr?

@fediverse

geoma,

Bluesky doesn’t even have an app available for us who don’t have access to the google store. So it is a no go for me.

geoma,

A lot of us here are on the same boat. We don’t know each other but deal with these same issues. We know the truth behind proprietary software and surveillance capitalism and we know that we can only succeed in our efforti if we bring together our loved ones. We need to find the best language and ways to let people know the reality behind the software they use, the dangers of using it, and the marvelous solutions of the free software community. We are a community. Let’s hold ourselves together and keep going. The world may be based in libre software in the future. If it doesn’t, it will be not a good place to live on. But at least we tried. If not for us, for the ones that’ll come in the future.

geoma,

And trusting with closed eyes and giving away control of their computers to that big tech co Having ads And enjoying updates at good moments And having to have an antivirus And paying licenses And having your children learn computing on an environment that they’ll get used to so they’ll have to buy their own when they get older and cope with all this sh*t

geoma,

I’m sorry if I insulted you. Didn’t mean to. What I mean is that its not a matter of paying or not paying. Or a matter of privacy or not. It’s a matter of freedom and the future of humanity.I Iove paying for libre software. We need software that respects people’s rights and gives them the possibility of studying, sharing and evolving to us humanity as a whole. That gives them control over their computers and lives.

geoma,

Good. But sometimes not paying for something now makes you pay more in the long run

geoma,

With or actions, we are creating a future for humanity Something like this: mastodon.social/

I understand your practical/functional approach. But I think the approach that sounds radical to you might also be a practical one that considers long term and big scale effects. I mean, the same happens in many aspects of life. Sometimes you do something in a more difficult way because you bet it will bring you benefits in the long term. Sometimes it really pays over but other times you think it will bring you benefits (and for example instead of doing something manually you write a script that does it) but you miss it and end spending more time on the job than if you’ve had just solved your specific problem manually. When we talk about sociology, politics and other complex subjects that go beyond our short term/personal benefit impact, we really frequently don’t have the knowledge to make the best decisions, so we kinda guess based on our experience and convictions. I think that’s what making us disagree right now. Personally, for me using libre software was a chimera until 6 years ago or so when I think it reached a mature point in which nowadays it can solve most needs with more practical benefits by far than proprietary software. Before that, I used Windows, Adobe and other proprietary software and dealt with its limitations. I mean I also have to say that I also used it because it was comfortable, easier and familiar for me (I was trained on Microsoft/Macromedia/Adobe ecosystem since a small kid) Probably, if I had no experience with computers before (and as I can confirm from the experience of installing GNU/Linux on other people’s computers, those that have no former experience with Windows nor Mac whatsoever have so much better/faster adoption of GNU/Linux), I could have adopted it earlier. The thing with libre software (contrary to most things in the material world) is that the more people use it, the better it gets, so that makes a special point on why using it could be beneficial for the whole system called humanity. Well anyway… Thanks for reading!

geoma,

There’s one dragonlance movie and its like the worse film Ive ever seen in my life

geoma,

Yes. could be. I am trying to promote the fediverse as much as possible so maybe I am overly doing it. What about just a minimal ethical/privacy friendly hosted service to put your data on? people use facebook or instagram, but they really could do with something so much lighter.

geoma,

Yes I’ve tried them and they could be used but aren’t really made for a corporate website

geoma,

yeah but needs hosting or using wordpress.com which is full of shitty trackers.

geoma,

Yeah they are on google maps (sadly needed) and openstreetmap, and they actually do have a wordpress (I am thinking of a restaurant) but they really don’t need so much. And they wanna quit hosting because they’ve had a lot of people as intermediaries taking advantage and charging a lot and the hassle of hosting migration etc. I love Drupal architecture though, but it is too much for the minimal needs.

geoma,

Yeah, I understand the logic… but what about if we break this barriers? They don’t really need a forum. Just a couple of static posts plus a microblogging would be enough. The ability of having interactions directly with the community would be a plus. I am not thinking only on solving their needs, but on proposing the fediverse as a solution to an actual problem so that we get more migrations.

The other way around would be to use something like neocities.org or silex.me or maybe even codeberg.page

geoma, (edited )

I’m sorry, I think I didn’t explain well my motivations. First of all, as many of you also are, I am a libre software and ethical platforms promoter. I am always looking for ways to help people migrate, for example, form instagram to pixelfed and the fediverse. It is difficult, mostly because of the network effect, so we need groups that are willing to make the change. Sometimes I help people and communities with their IT issues ad honorem, but in exchange I ask them to use and promote libre/ethical platforms. So, the other day I was thinking… what if, instead of trying to find how to make people move to the fediverse, we promote the fediverse as a platform for solving a need people are nowadays having? And it turns out I found a lot of people wanting a minimal website with minimum hassle. Instagram was not designed for websites, and the hindrances it intentionally has, make it a much worse platform thaan what a static site or a even a CMS site would be. But a lot of people and businesses use Instagram as their main “website”. So, the thing is, what if for example I could set up an instance, in which I provide premium support to “clients”, and I could even charge for this! (I am not thinking in making money, but where I live, although it sounds stupid, people sometimes value more what is paid than another “free” web platform.) And I give them their minimal space for posting their things with an easy interface. They will get the interactions with peoples as a plus. They will see they won’t have ads nor need to have an instagram account. Maybe this will help boost peoples migration to the fediverse. Pixelfed for example is perfect for artists… it offers a portfolio feature. But for other kinds of business, we need something more like facebook pages. Firefish (ex calckey) has pages functionality… I don’t know… I am just thinking out loud.

What did you do to survive the night of/after a breakup?

Boyfriend of 2 years (best friend of 6) just told me he’s started seeing someone else. No discussion. Just ghosted me for a week and hit me with this news. Thought he was my soulmate, lmao. I feel like someone just ripped out my insides. Just turned 31 this year, this shit is not any easier than when I was a teenager....

geoma,

I’ve tried many things in this situations (seeing other girls, distracting with alcohol/drugs, etc) but they all just seem to alleviate the pain when they just throw it under the rug for a while.

For me, the best way to handle this has been to face my pain altogether. This pain does not come from this event. It is my own ancient pain that has been triggered by my now ex. Staying with the pain, listening to it, feeling it in your body and letting it be there is a transformative act.

I recommend listening to Pema Chödron’s videos or books. Maybe “When things fall apart”. I personally have been helped a lot by doing the “tonglen” meditation.

geoma,

someone could stock stock stock photo photos and share them with the rest of us

geoma,

If you use the minimum and precise amount of water, water will be completely evaporated when pasta is done, so you won’t have to strain. I don’t know why, but this makes pasta so much tasteful.

geoma,

Yeah but also has like another taste (I don’t salt much)… Maybe starch or something?

I understand there is an open engine for morrowind with better graphics called OpenMW. Look for it here: osgameclones.com

How can I download spotify songs with premium quality without having a Spotify premium

I am talking about downloading to my disk not to Spotify App. Now, is there a way to download songs you like in their highest quality? Zorify and Spot-Dl requires spotify premium and YT-music premium respectively if I am not wrong. What are my options now?...

geoma,

Songs are not spotify’s. They are songs.you could use torrent or soulseek.

Fennec (android) and Firefox (PC) for most people

I just started using Linux... any great tips?

I just installed Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS (Cinnamon) on an empty laptop a couple days ago and have been experimenting a lot. I’m coming from being a Windows user since I was just a little kid playing old DOS games on my grandpa’s Win-98 PC back in around 2000. My daily driver is currently running Windows 10 but I am pretty adamant...

geoma,

This. Or mx linux.

Gemini

geoma,

It’s purposely designed to get you in the ecosystem easily an comfortably and make your exit hard, so you stay and keep buying all gadgets from them

geoma,

Where do you get that app from?

geoma,

Ah I see. I don’t have access to that store. And connect is not on f-droid store because ot’s closed source. I wonder why using a closed source lemmy app if we have open ones.

geoma,

It is becoming each day more critical to choose open source over closed source. It’s a matter of security, privacy and concentration of power

best fediverse solution for a project/corporate /entrepreneurship page

I know everybody with a project should have their own website and then federate to social networks. But people have become lazy in this sense and they hold their projects inside instagram. Ok, they could use pixelfed instead, but IG/PF are not the best fit for holding a project (for example your artistic/therapeutic/whatever...

geoma,

Cool! I’ll have a look Thanks!
