gabe,

For the most part, it should be. Will it? Time will tell. A lot of people are actively hostile to the idea of federation, even on lemmy. It’s very “complicated” for a lot of non-techy people to grapple with, but unfortunately as more and more centralized platforms implode its just going to have to become a new normal out of necessity regardless.

@lemmy_support you really need to count users in a saner way. There is no way that alien.top has over half a million user accounts.

gabe,

Oooooof yeah I didn’t even think about the fact that instance might fuck up the user account number statistics. Ugh. I don’t think that’s a lemmy thing, that’s an alien.top thing.

gabe,

Idk if this was wonky kbin federation or spam to start shit but posting it three times in a row isn’t going to lead to more people biting the bait

gabe,

Literature.cafe is very much still here and we didn’t merge into .world nor close down, this software is for book tracking and book reviews :P

gabe,

I would love a federated neopets clone, had an idea for a time for a federated gaia online style avatar website

gabe,

Knitting my own garments (sweaters, scarfs, etc) has made me appreciate how long it really takes to make actually good clothing that’s meant to last. Thankfully more and more people are getting on board with the idea of “slow fashion”, with a significant amount of younger people especially during the pandemic picking up knitting and crochet as well as seeing more of the value it possesses than before.

gabe,

What the fuck? I looked at that title and thought there was no way I am reading this right, but yep I am.

gabe,

Thank you.

gabe,

Antisemitism explicitly refers to hatred of Jews, it’s a weird linguistics thing but its why when referring to antisemitism there isnt a dash (anti-semitism) as that would specifically refer to all semites as a whole (which palestinians are). It has roots to the specific phrase that was used in German to refer to hatred of Jews.

gabe,

Mmm, there’s nuance there. It can be exploited to push antisemitism, but it isn’t inherently antisemitic.

gabe,

As a Jew, I say this kindly as I possibly can but it very much is quite strong in the real world. I’ve experienced antisemitism numerous times over with people using antizionism as an excuse. Antisemitism is really bad and has risen in the past few years online and offline, and people with bad intentions absolutely exploit Israeli war crimes to justify their antisemitism. And it creates a shitty feedback loop as hardcore Zionists point to instances of antisemitism that’s in done under the guise of antizionism as “hey look see they hate us thats why we need zionism!”

gabe, (edited )

Any group. Antisemitism is unfortunately a unique form of racism that can be perpetuated by anyone. It’s complicated, and it’s complexity makes it all the more frustrating. It’s not just a Nazi thing, it’s an anyone thing. Anyone can perpetuate antisemitism, not just Nazis. That’s why it’s such a prevalent form of bigotry across the world. It’s also prevalent not just in Europe but there is antisemitism that has been culturally common in the Middle East as well as it is in the West, most of it which predates Israels founding as a whole too. That doesn’t justify Israels bullshit and their fascist government. Jew’s are hated by nearly everyone, everywhere.

Because West media purposely masking Israel with the cloak of cultural protection given to Jews is often what I discuss with my friend and is fucking disgusting and a disservice to all of the innocent Jews.

This specifically is something to be very careful when stating, as it veers dangerously close into territory of “jews control the media” which is an antisemitic conspiracy theory. I know what you are trying to say and our intentions seem to be in good faith here, but I ask you to analyze that as it is one of those things that people may take in very bad faith.

www.ushmm.org/antisemitism/…/explained <- this is a good primer for it. It’s extremely complicated and there’s a reason why even in the US many well intentioned people don’t understand it either. It also doesn’t help that Israel uses legit examples of antisemitism to try and shield their war crimes from criticism.

gabe, (edited )

Don’t attempt to explain my own peoples hatred to me. I know more than you as I’ve lived this, as a Jew who is explicitly not a Zionist and has faced antisemitism online and offline. Stop.

gabe,

encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/…/antisemitism this article specifically and the series of it goes into detail more beyond that

gabe,

It hurts itself in confusion

gabe,

lemmyverse.net is a good place to find more communities as well as the new communities community as mentioned. I’ll also add !trendingcommunities is good as well :)

gabe,

Wow. He straight up just admitted he’s a Nazi. Absolutely fucking vile.

gabe,

You must not know much about german politics lol go to the wikipedia page for AFD

gabe,

Let it happen organically. It will happen in waves.

A little rant about lemmy.ml

I like a lot of the communities on that instance, but every once in a while I just get hit with a random wave of toxicity by them for no reason. For example, there was a post asking which communities from Reddit do you wish existed on Lemmy, and I answered honestly saying more car related communities as they are one of my...

gabe,

Something that takes a bit of adjustment that a lot of ex-Redditors here are yet to realize: the fediverse is specifically built for curating your experience overall. It’s not meant to replicate the Reddit’s everything all jumbled together experience. There technically is somewhat of a post algorithm to a degree on lemmy, but most of the fediverse doesn’t have that and what lemmy has is a very bare minimum. Follow the communities you are interested in and block the ones you really can’t vibe with. When more granular blocking and silencing comes especially on the admin end, it’ll be more easy to utilize that curation experience as well. No one here is forced to interact with you and you aren’t forced to interact with them, and if the person you cant vibe with is an instance admin or a community mod you can go somewhere you vibe better or start something new yourself instead if you have time and energy to do so.

Free yourself and block that community that raises your blood pressure. You aren’t missing anything, I promise.

gabe,

Reserved for pickup at my library 👀

gabe,

The series looks excellent so far! I am so freaking excited!

gabe,

It’s only just begun. That’s what they said about Xitter ages ago as well, but if it can get worse it absolutely fucking will

gabe,

It’s gradually improving but its 100% not ready for full production outside of enthusiasts who are willing and patient enough to take the time and effort to wrangle with its quirks. If you want to self host (especially as a single user) and aren’t prepared to make vigorous backups and aren’t extremely technical inclined/are a regular average user it’s *really *not worth it right now. It likely will be in time, but there’s a lot of issues with lemmy that need to be addressed. Thankfully the coming update will address some of its most serious though. It helps to be involved in the admin matrix community chats and generally accepting community assistance, but it’s just far too much to keep on top of for most people. If I didn’t have a community and mine was a single user instance, I 100% would have shut it down weeks ago and migrated over to a larger instance.

gabe,

There are some in development! Gotosocial is very very single user friendly and easy to setup and so is writefreely. I do hope in time there is a “lemmy lite” version that has local communities disabled completely and more local user friendly settings. It likely will in time, but we will see.

gabe,

We absolutely welcome that here :)

gabe,
gabe,

If you ever wanna share it or talk about it, you’re welcome to on many (if not all) of the communities on literature.cafe

gabe,

I think for a shitpost instance a custom ad network banner ads with memes and shitposts would be make sense. What I mean by that is that on geocities as well as some small internet sites there’s “custom ad networks” where they basically rely on donations and or just random people submitting “ads” that normally tend to be just links to their site, weird obscure memes, animal pictures, etc.

I think real ads for the sake of advertising on lemmy wouldn’t really be acceptable in any form, but shitposting ads have potential imo

gabe,

I liked it at the time but it was just very much forgettable. I still haven’t bothered with the sequel because I forgot what the first one was even about

gabe,

I read that in an old posh British ladies voice and it fit so well

gabe,

Hey uh let’s please not use the r slur

gabe,

No. “R****d” is a slur against disabled people. It has an extremely dark history and people with disabilities have been advocating against it for years. It has a very, very, very dark historical connotation here in the US.

gabe,

Doing so much better than last week. Got my instance back up and running and was able to bring up some very much needed conversations that hopefully lemmy backend contributors have begun to take note of. Had a lovely Rosh Hashanah and am prepping for Yom Kippur soon. Was sadly unable to participate in person due to increased COVID stuff, but it was still nice to disconnect from everything and dip some apples in honey. Been actually coming out of my reading slump too :)

Hope the rest of your week is somewhat more chill, or you can at least get some rest this weekend

"How can we make lemmy a safer place for women? Is it even possible to?" - literature.cafe (literature.cafe)

Conversation ongoing over there, inviting anyone who wants to participate to please consider sharing their thoughts if they are willing to. If you wanna post in the original thread from your instance copy and paste the link into your instances search panel...

gabe,

Absolutely. Having people involved in this discussion directly and hearing their experiences on lemmy from a non-cis male perspective may help a lot with moderation tool development to gauge what safety concerns need to be addressed.

[Solved] Federation Issues

I run a Lemmy instance at lemmy.sedimentarymountains.com. It has been working for some time. 6 days ago it stopped getting updates from communities it was federated with. If I view all posts by active there is nothing newer than 6 days old. I checked disk space on the server, there is plenty. I don’t appear to be running out...

gabe,

Are you able to renew the SSL certificate? It appears to be expired.

gabe,

What reasons are they uncomfy and is there any way we can make women safer here? Not sealioning, being genuine. I try my best to make my instance as inclusive and welcoming as possible and would love to know if there’s anyway I could improve. I honestly would go as far to say there’s a pretty high ratio of women on literature.cafe compared to other small niche focused instances, but I don’t have any actual statistics to gauge from to say definitively.

gabe,

I can vouch for slrpnk.net. Their staff team is fantastic and extremely proactive in engaging on matters pertaining to user safety.

gabe,

Oh g-d, I don’t even wanna include ebooks. I have at least 1000 ebooks, and about 100 or so audiobooks.
