A New York judge sentenced a woman who pleaded guilty to fatally shoving an 87-year-old Broadway singing coach onto a Manhattan sidewalk to six months more in prison than the eight years that had been previously reached in a plea deal.
This is the problem of moral luck. We often want to punish people more because factors outside of the perpetrator’s control turned out badly. Either we should punish everybody harshly when they push an elderly person, whether or not it injures them, or someone like this should get a pretty light sentence. Yet we have an irrational pull to treat the cases differently.
The sun is not yellow or orange as we see in books and movies. It emits all the colours in the visible spectrum (also in other spectrums as well) making it white!
I always viewed it as a give and take. You’re expected to do the reading and understand the basics. The professor is there to give context and help you work out the harder stuff that doesn’t leap off the page. If neither does their job, no learning gets done.
Lens manufacturers say that anything other than a microfiber cloth will damage the coatings on a lens. But microfiber cloths eventually pick up crap and they look like they’re a pain to wash....
Obligatory capitalism is bad too (but at least I’m in less danger of getting vanned in the middle of the night for insulting random great leader - attemtping to undermine the social order or whatever they called thoughtcrimes.)
Maybe you are, currently, in the United States of Europe. But this is really more a function of liberal democracy than capitalism. You could get vanned for saying the wrong thing about the great leader in quite a few capitalist countries. You’d be in high danger of having pretty terrible things happen to you for saying the wrong thing in the US until pretty recently, and the US has been capitalist pretty much since its inception.
No shit skip, of course they shouldn’t turn the ball over, or get red cards, or what the fuck ever. Passing gas in the bathroom and think it’s perfume; literally shitty analysis I just heard on ESPN....
I’ve never smoked, but I’ve been around people that do. What do people feel during/after smoking? It doesn’t seem to make people high or hallucinate or anything. It maybe mildly relaxes them?
Nicotine is an awesome drug. Increases your focus and provides a mild euphoric effect. Of course it’s not good for you, and if you’ve got to do it, it’s better to get it in some other way than to smoke cigarettes.
Edit: lots of people are suggesting that you don’t get any benefit once you’re addicted, except satisfying the cravings. That’s not true. Nicotine feels good even after you’ve been using it for a long time.
If I’m on my computer I might. But the reddit android is so bad. Loaded with apps and I can’t change the font at all. So I use Lemmy on my phone, which is most of the time.
It could be over a few months, like a new job where one day you feel like actually going to work thinking, hey I actually like these people and don’t mind working here....
Yeah definitely. In the span of a month my wife suddenly left me to date women, my job laid me off, and my dog got sick and needed surgery. Everything I’d relied on for ten years just fell apart real fast and without a whole lot of warning. It’s been quite the year trying to recover from all that. Dog survived, divorce finalized, still no job.
Warms my heart to see somebody concerned, though I imagine I’ll have to figure it out myself. I’m in Seattle and used to work in management/IT consulting. I’ve got a weird background though, cause I’ve got a PhD in philosophy and spent the ten years before that teaching a bunch of logic. It’s a pretty tough combination to find a job with.
In my experience it doesn’t work well when you have more than a couple people editing the file. My company had a group of ten modifying the same file in live time; it led to huge desync problems.
What a profound indictment of the spirit of capitalism. That someone could have limitless money, look around the world and see all its misery, and yet have no idea what to spend money on. That cold evil is hard for anyone with a beating heart to imagine.

I’m an adjunct professor. If every adjunct professor disappeared today, universities would instantly be better for students and professors. Administrators would hate it, though.
It’s pretty easy to come up with some things billionaires have done that are good. Bill Gates funding cures and prevention of diseases in the third world is one that comes to mind.
Now, if we’re talking about finding an example of a billionaire whose life is on balance a good thing for humanity…that’s pretty much impossible.
I’m really confused reading this thread. Why isn’t it possible to just twist and tuck it left or right? I’m a dude and have never had a problem peeing sitting down on a round toilet.

People should be allowed to wear what they want. That said, nobody should voluntarily wear these terrible symbols of sexism and oppression. The literal religious purpose of the abaya and even the hijab is to promote modesty, with the rationale that men can’t control themselves and it’s women’s responsibility to do that for them. Fuck that message and fuck the ideology that it perpetuates.
Yeah, I’m a leftist and I find Islam as abhorrent as Christianity. I get that Muslims are a minority in the west, and so they’re often unjustly persecuted. But that doesn’t mean we should accept conservative nonsense just cause it comes from a minority religious group.
This reasoning goes all the way back to Epicurus. With regard to your latter points, Epicurus thought they were also solved by being dead. For someone to miss out on something, they have to exist in the first place. No person, no missing out. And for not existing to be bad, a person must be around to be upset about it.

By automatically declines, you mean you have the assistant answer, then you select your response from that screen, right? It annoys me that I even have to screen the call at all, but I guess it’s better than what you get on most phones.
These people saying one a week must be living in hell, but they’re definitely outliers. I’ve lived in the same spot for three years here in Seattle without ever having a solicitor come to my door.
