Albbi,

Deployable sail for bicycles for when the wind is going in your direction. Easy to retract and put away when not needed.

Albbi,

You must spend a lot of time rereading your posts then! I love 'em all.

Albbi,

Just get me in a shower and I’ll give you tons of great ideas!

Also can’t do that in front of people…

Albbi,

Haven’t seen Summoning Salt mentioned yet. He does great videos on the history of speed running a video game.

An example video would be Super Mario Bros: The Human Limit where the difference between a tool assisted speed run and what a human is capable is discussed. And how Super Mario Bros has an interesting mechanic allowing humans to be imperfect but still able to tie a perfectly executed speed run done using essentially a script of commands.

Anytime I get new shoes I go to Ian’s Shoelace Site to pick out a new lacing pattern.

And Ian’s Secure Knot is a godsend for winter boots that usually have a bit thicker laces which come undone with a regular knot. Learning that knot is great because it’s as strong as double knotting without needing to pick apart the knot afterwards.

Albbi,

Even the lights go out after that pun.

Albbi,

Baby wristlet with heartbeat sensor (this one will make you go proper crazy)

They have socks that do this. Bluetooth app connection to your phone.

Albbi,

What’s your source for gluten being bad for your heart? This Harvard study from 2017 says the opposite.

www.bmj.com/content/357/bmj.j1892

Conclusion Long term dietary intake of gluten was not associated with risk of coronary heart disease. However, the avoidance of gluten may result in reduced consumption of beneficial whole grains, which may affect cardiovascular risk. The promotion of gluten-free diets among people without celiac disease should not be encouraged.

NYC MTA sets Manhattan congestion price at $15 for most vehicles, just one MTA vote left before the first congestion pricing in North America (www.planetizen.com)

New York City’s congestion pricing program is moving forward with a $15 fee on passenger vehicles, reports Stephen Nessen in Gothamist, after the MTA board voted to approve it. The program now enters a 60-day public comment period before a final vote....

Albbi,

At least their vehicles aren’t obnoxiously noisy.

Albbi,

I left old.lemmy.ca to upvote you.

Albbi,

As someone who enjoys the magic systems of Brandon Sanderson, I do piss on Star Wars for not having a logical basis for The Force.

Actually it’s not that bad. Harry Potter is much worse.

New extensions you’ll love now available on Firefox for Android (blog.mozilla.org)

Albbi,

The stairs in the movie don’t line up either. Always bothered me.

Albbi,

You need to know where the wooden studs are first because drywall is only easy to punch between the studs.

Albbi,

Been seeing a lot of this stuff in my Google news feed.

“This game is Hades + Dead Cells!” etc.

Such an easy way to get clicks. I’ve stopped clicking though.

Albbi,

Tandy Deskmate! Guess you never forget your first.

Albbi,

Robert Jordan wrote some Conan the Barbarian books. I was caught off guard by Conan being smart. It was rather scary.

Albbi,

No problem. It was a random find at the library for me. I was looking for the next Wheel of Time book, but it was out and these Conan books were right there. I picked them up and loved them.

Actually, I’ll put them next on my re-read list.

Albbi,

You and me focus on different things while reading a book.

Albbi,

Oh right, sorry. I kinda forgot about that.

My most recent read through of WoT was while falling asleep. Those sections were fucking boring even then. Most of the time I would remember 10-15 minutes worth and then rewind to what I remembered the next night. During the slog I didn’t even bother sometimes.

Albbi,

Mods are locking down discord tomorrow?

Albbi,

There’s also no time travelling in Old Man’s War. (listening to book 5 right now)

He must’ve misread the title. Certainly misread the book.

Albbi,

You mean with the skip drives? Which books I the series have you read. There’s something about them that isn’t talked about until I think book 2. Definitely in 5.

Albbi,

I’m struggling to think of what part of the book you’re thinking of.

I’m on book 5 and 15 years have passed since the events of the first book. One of the characters says he’s 90, and they leave Earth when they’re 75. There’s no hundreds of years passing for anyone. The FTL travel is explained in a way without time dilation, but does have other side effects.

I’m being intentionally vague as Old Man’s War is one of my favourite book series and I enjoyed the reveal of the early plot points.

Albbi,

Nope, totally different book series. In Old Man’s War, 75 year olds from earth are recruited to fight aliens in space. How the military makes use of old farts is the first plot point.

Albbi,
Albbi,

I thought it was a far side comic I saw as a kid, but after googling it I couldn’t find the original source.

Albbi,

That was a pretty fun video! Wasn’t sure what I would get without a title on your post.

Albbi,

Must be following you. Stay alert. Especially if they turn on their blinkers right after you do

Albbi,

I got “Invalid Dynamic Link” on your link.

Albbi,

In any case, every time I visit Reddit and look at my local subs (Montréal, Québec or Canada) I look at the comments and they’re absolutely vile. The community has become so fucking toxic it’s unbearable. And I also realized how my mental health actually improved since I left that community.

I used to dread seeing that I had messages on Reddit. My first thought would be “Oh, what did I do now?”. On Lemmy, I’m much more interested in seeing any responses to my comments.

Albbi,

I mean, there’s a lot of work that goes into recording and editing the audio for an entire book. As well as desire for good talent to do the reading and acting is an important part of audio books as well.

(said by someone who has never purchased an audiobook outside of humble bundle and sailed the high seas for the others)

Albbi,

Ooh, do we have another Jesus situation going on here? I’ll hop on on this.

Albbi,

Could be using a stock photo for getting the story out quickly. Still, good to be skeptical of any fast news coming from the region.

Albbi,

Pixel phones have built in spam blocking on phone calls and messages.

Albbi,

I think it is on android in the ‘phone’ app, but many other manufacturers have their own default apps, so it’s not as common for them to use it. Also, I think it was exclusive for a while since only pixels had Android 12 when the feature came out. I think now anyone can use it but I have a pixel and can’t really confirm that.

Albbi,

"I’m not going to ask you to remember them all. Mostly because I don’t remember them all. Therefore, for ease of both narrative and our collective sanity, I’m going to name only the more important members of the Crow’s Song. The rest, regardless of gender, I’ll call ‘Doug.’ You’d be surprised how common the name is across worlds. Oh, some spell it ‘Dug’ or ‘Duhg,’ but it’s always around. Regardless of local linguistics, parents eventually start naming their kids Doug. I once spent ten years on a planet where the only sapient life was a group of pancakelike beings that expressed themselves through flatulence. And I kid you not—one was named Doug. Though admittedly it had a very distinctive smell attached when the word was ‘spoken.’'Doug’is the naming equivalent to convergent evolution. And once it arrives, it stays. A linguistic Great Filter; a wakeup call. Once a society reaches peak Doug, it’s time for it to go sit in the corner and think about what it has done."

Albbi,

Huh, I guess having a big phone helps? No idea what this is taking about and I use Liftoff.

Albbi,

Good one!

Not!

If it was good enough for Wayne’s World, it’s good enough for me!

Albbi,

Omg, thank you so much!

Albbi,

It’s not tire noise I’m hearing in bed at 1am while some yahoo is treating residential roads like a racetrack.

Albbi,

That arm wrestling scene scared the hell out of me. I was way too young for it.

Albbi,

Got that free from Epic a little while ago. Guess it’s a good time to start it up for the first time.

Albbi,

Yes but viruses are unseen and can’t be shot. A zombie can be seen and can be shot. I think those that didn’t understand how to fight a virus or believe it was a thing at all would happily shoot a zombie.

Albbi,

I work in bioinformatics, which is the application of computer science to biological problems. I have set up a genetic sequencing machine and nearly a petabyte of storage and backup for all the data because it’s huge. I really like my field because it is the application of my skills to solving problems real world problems. I’m currently employed by a children’s hospital creating tools to make genetic testing procedures better. Very fulfilling.

The field does have some issues. Many of the tools are research projects, not necessarily written by good programmers. Getting things working is a task in itself, but is becoming easier thanks to containerization technologies. Also, the pay for some reason is lower than IT work, even though it’s an interdisciplinary field requiring knowledge of biology, IT and programming. But I worked as a programmer for a few years, fixing bugs and not really working on making anything new or interesting, and I wouldn’t go back to that even though it paid better.
