I played it two years ago and ran into slight issues with shadows. The game has the same quirks as it does on Windows with some quick time events being linked to the framerate.

Modding the game on Linux is quite difficult.

There’s a few open source front ends for Twitch that I’ve tried but I’ve had the occasional issue with video playback either stopping and being unable to reload or if I’m watching a VOD it won’t consistently remember my position so I’d say I prefer the official app.

Normally I use open source ones when possible such as NewPipe or Invidious for YouTube for example.

GRIS. An absolutely gorgeous game with some relatively easy platforming and puzzles. It was published by Devolver Digital.

If you are lightly toasted ECHO can be a lot of fun. Great visuals and plenty of ways to cheese your way around puzzles.

Cloud Punk is a super chill cyberpunk taxi game. I don’t think I ever felt stressed playing it.

Is it dumb to create a wiki in this day and age?

I have a vague idea to create a wiki for politics-related data. Basically, I’m annoyed with how low-effort, entirely un-researched content dominates modern politics. I think a big part of the problem is that modern political figures use social media platforms that are hostile to context and citing sources....

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I think Wikis themselves are more useful than ever but I don’t know how well a political Wiki would go over. I could see it being very easy to get accused of being biased in one direction.

You may want to do some digging and see if something similar exists though I doubt a lot of websites would be open to outside submissions.

If you do decide to create one I would be interested to see a historical background section. For example if a page is dedicated to improving failing infrastructure in the United States including when and why it was developed, prior large pushes for maintenance, and the history of funding.

I feel like knowing how things go the way that they are should be a bigger part of people’s political views. That is unrelated to your question though; just an idea.

Have you ever tried an open source dating app?

I recall hearing about Alovoa a year ago and while it sounds nice with no ads or paid features, being open source, and private data being encrypted I have to imagine the userbase is incredibly small relative to other services. Google Play lists it at over a thousand downloads but it’s also available through F-Droid so that may...

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

With more and more people leaving mainstream sites like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook I could see not having to login with another social media platform being what drives people towards a privacy focused dating app even if the actual privacy portion is more of an after thought for most users.

I am not sure how reputable Zippia (or other sources) are when it comes to statistics but if accurate and similar 2022 the tech industry is still mostly men and caucasian.

I wasn’t able to find statistics on sexual orientation. There are a lot of companies vagluely bragging about how inclusive they are and not much in the way of stats.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yeah like I said I wasn’t sure where to get information on orientation.

I’d be curious how those numbers overlap with average dating apps and match statistics.

It doesn’t hurt to be cautious. Trusted sources have occasionally included malicious materials and blindsided users

State of gaming on linux?

I used linux in the past, both privately and work-related, but the last time was over 10 years ago, so I’m a bit out of touch. I am in need of a new PC, but it’ll be a good year before I have the funds, so for now I am making due with an i5 7500 and a gtx 1660. I do have 32 GB so there’s that. I finally feel confident...

Have you heard of ProtonDB? It rates the current state of games and recommended fixes.

Gaming on Linux has improved a lot over the years. It’s typically only multiplayer games with Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) that you’ll run into major issues with. Mod managers frequently require a fair amount of extra work and reading but I think a lot of Bethesda games have easy work arounds and documentation.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

One other website I’d check out if you are getting into any obscure/older games that might not have a lot of comments on ProtonDB is the PCGamingWiki. Lots of fixes are listed there

Following the spirit of spreading across the Fediverse (and because my main instance is down so many times, because diverse reasons) I’m intrigued about the joining instance process, because I honestly don’t know what criteria to have in order to join another one if I ever want to do it....

I have a similar story where I originally went with FMHY up until it went down. I decided to go with dbzer0 because they have a similar stance for discussing piracy.

That said, as far as I know, they have the same rule as /r/piracy when it comes to requesting or linking to content which I don’t personally like. I enjoyed helping people find music and TV shows on FMHY. They also want to keep things SFW which I don’t personally have strong feelings about one way or the other but I’d prefer an instance with an indifferent approach.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Thanks. I think dbzer0 will be fine.

The instance owner seems really on the ball when it comes to things like defederation and updates and like they have plans to keep the instance alive in the long term even with the influx of users. I might create a FMHY account and check to see how things are going.

Normally $399

256GB: $419 refurbished versus $529 for new

Normally $529

512GB: $519 refurbished versus $649 for new

Normally $649

I read some of their comments and it seems like this is a re-created account and they got into contact with the old moderators about it instead of going the /r/RedditRequest route. They did post on /r/RedditRequest about /r/LinuxQuestions.

They are aware of Lemmy and have commented the following

I use lemmy via the browser on my iPhone. It’s not amazing and it has a lot of bugs but I believe it’s a good platform - it’s just not ready yet

and

I’m very pro lemmy but as you say, it’s not quite ready yet. In the meantime, there’s an opportunity to help new users and maintain a decent space for everyone

In /r/Linux’s pinned post they stated that we have new mods despite being the only moderator but commented the following

(We’re waiting to hear back from another user who might be available)

At least so far it doesn’t sound like they are doing it maliciously or squatting on the subreddit. I feel like waiting until they had additional moderators or stating which moderator(s) gave them the go-ahead before making a pinned post along with mentioning that a lot of the community has attempted to migrate to Lemmy would have been a good idea.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yeah I’m wondering what exactly they meant. Maybe they were referring to the mobile applications?

I could see them having issues with the smaller user base or how a federated platform works with things like finding communities outside of your instance but those aren’t bugs.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

There is crypto. You could take Bitcoin or if you want to be incredibly cautious Monero. It is an additional hurdle though for the average consumer.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Similar to the classic joke:

Why did the sperm cross the road?

Because I put on the wrong socks this morning.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yeah it’s federation.

A different domain (ex. .TV, .us., .gov, etc.) doesn’t always mean it’s the same site. I couldn’t find any notable cases (or court cases) but an example could be mylocalbusiness.de versuses mylocalbusiness.pt

In that situation I can create a website for my local business in Germany and not have to worry about an identically named business in Portugal potentially.

It is important to keep this in mind though because spoofing one website for malicious purposes is a real hazard.

I need to take a break from Lemmy

Hello guys, I need to take a break from Lemmy. Lately, I’ve become attached to it, a part of the community (which is probably good). Unfortunately, it triggers fear of missing out (FOMO) lately for me. Don’t get me wrong, Lemmy has become the most wonderful community on the Internet, but this time, I need a break from the...

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Good luck.

In addition, I want to test myself how long I will stay away from social networks. I want to understand why community-based social media like Lemmy is addictive, what are the benefits and drawbacks of it, and re-learn how to use the Internet.

I think a big part of it is accessibility. If you are using your phone for social media then you have something alleviate boredom at a moments notice. It’s good to think about how you use those awkward amounts of time in your life and if using a social media service like Lemmy starts exceed those time periods and eat away at your day to day life.

I feel like Lemmy is at a point where you can browse by all and find a sizeable chunk of content you can interact with and we haven’t reach the point where people can go back and tell you something has already or is regularly posted in a community.

It’s nice but I don’t think I’ve felt any FOMO yet. I feel like Lemmy will continue to grow and feel this way for a while yet and I don’t think I need to really push to add content in the hopes it stays viable and relevant

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

They work just fine. You can either attempt to use the install script Lutris provides you and hope it gives you the option to supply your own files (this is primarily GOG games and source ports) or set up a new game from scratch by selecting the exe file of the installer and later changing it to the game.

You should check ProtonDB even if you aren’t using Proton to make sure there’s no additional fixes or edits that need to be applied.

If you need help or have questions let me know.

  1. Lemmy is now a real alternative. When reddit imploded Lemmy wasn’t fully set up to take advantage of the exodus, so a lot of users came over to the fediverse and gave up right away. There were no phone apps, the user interface was rudimentary, and communities weren’t yet alive. Next time reddit screws up in a high profile way, and they will screw up, the fediverse will be ready.

I definitely think having mobile apps is an essential step. I was looking at alternative platforms such as Raddle.me but using a mobile browser was an extra hurdle (similar to using the official Reddit app) that kept me from regularly checking in.

  1. Lemmy has way more potential than reddit. Reddit’s leadership has always been incompetent and slow at fixing problems. The fediverse has been very responsive to user feedback in comparison.

I could see this causing issues later. We’ve already seen issues arise with some instances using the .ml domain or not being updated immediately.

Defederation is another beast all together. Most of an instance might be fine but a few problematic communities could create problems leading to arguments and, as much as I hate the term, drama.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Would you be down for playing with a mod?

If so you could do The SomeGuy Series for Fallout New Vegas. It provides several more friendly and fully voiced quests.

If you want to play Fallout 4 you could try Project Cartographer combined with Sim Settlments. That way you can fully explore all the neat unmarked locations Fallout 4 has to offer and not worry too much about settlement building.

If you are stuck between Fallout 3 and New Vegas you can try Tale of Two Wastelands and bounce back and forth between the two.

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Are they inactive right now? I’m not sure if they went the way of re3 (a reverse engineered version of GTA 3 designed to fix bugs, port the game to several platforms, and expand modding capabilities) and were shut down under pressure from Rockstar.

CorrodedCranium,

Another classic. It’s a shame the client cannot run on Linux due to the lack of shared resources in DXVK.

From what I recall Doitsujin of DXVK seems to think it’s a ways away from getting fixed.

CorrodedCranium, (edited )

There are archived versions of re3 and reVC if you wanted to give it a try. I can’t say I’ve had any issues running the latest release.

How can i become a true pirate?

Hello. I have now recently set up an i2p torrenting system connected to jellyfin. The upside is that I pay zero to vpns and i2p actually has a pretty awesome selection of movies and tv shows (postman ftw). For real, i feel like i2p is where it’s at right now in the torrenting world, as it completely bypasses the need to trust...

CorrodedCranium,

Did you let it run for a bit and configure your browser? Mental Outlaw has a good setup video.

What are some tips and tricks to help in doing online research about a particular topic? (kbin.social)

This is one of my goals of the year - to better myself at doing online research. I wish to be able to get more precise (?) results for what I am searching. Idk if I'm making myself clear here but I'd greatly appreciate any tips that you may have for me. Thanks in advance!...

Depending on your search engine there’s all kinds of things you can do from excluding results that contain specific words, matching exact phrases, or searching for specific file types.

I’d recommend finding a cheat sheet for Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, or whatever else you use.

Due it being like this since I got it, an intermittent issue, and a common issue online I don’t think it is the unit. Killing Oculus’ software and restarting it would occasionally get it to work so I feel like it might be that. I spent sometime reading Oculus Support threads and others shared my suspicions.

My only other thought would have been my motherboard or power supply. My CPU, GPU, and RAM should be enough.
