iOS 17.1.1 Breaking Touch on 15 Pro Max (discussions.apple.com)

Just a word of caution for other people: The latest iOS 17.1.1 might break wired charging and touch screen functionality on the 15 Pro Max. I was one of the unlucky ones, for whom charging and touch screen stopped working after installing the update and rebooting. Side buttons work fine, but touch screen does nothing and the...

You know, sometimes I see a comment here or there complaining that Nintendo doesn’t have their games on Xbox or PlayStation. That they should just sell themselves to do that.

This is why they don’t. Get ready for a Switch 2 that by all measure will be “too weak to play modern games,” and then Nintendo will turn around and sell millions of systems and games.

Never tried hitting that share button in eight years?

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

Doesn’t mean you can’t save some fun photos for later. They save to your console by default; you don’t have to share them at all.

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

Counterpoint: I really enjoy taking photos in games that have photo modes, and it’s a great button for that.

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

Same.

But at least my car is less likely to get stolen!

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

Me too. Mine is so noticeably worse I started to think I needed to replace the battery. But I’m glad to hear that’s probably not the case.

Before the update I wouldn’t even think about the battery and just charge overnight. Now it’s a real crapshoot on how long it lasts.

@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

It seems like this update (so far) has also helped with some scrolling issues I’ve been seeing on iPad with a trackpad. I hope I’m not speaking too soon on this, but it feels much better to use right now.

I’ve recently been using an Alexandrite instance for Lemmy on my iPad for a bit because of this, so I’m happy it’s seemed to be improved,

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

I often have my iPad in landscape mode with stage manager on during the day. I’ll plug it into a monitor on occasion for a bigger screen — and of course in that instance I can’t touch the screen.

I have a trackpad and keyboard for it so I can use it off to the side while I do my main work on my main monitors.

Before, the app would get into some state where the scrolling would be really stuttery with the mouse, especially when I went back and forth between posts. But so far today I haven’t noticed anything like that.

But to directly answer the question, I’m almost always using my iPad in landscape.

@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

Uh oh, it’s been a few days, and my issues with scrolling via trackpad seem to have crept back up. Oh well.

I’m sure it’ll get resolved at some point.

Edit: When I just reread this now, it kind of sounds passive aggressive, and that’s not my intention at all. Just FYI for anyone reading this.

@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

It’s just that the scrolling that get really stuttery and sometimes stop working for a few moments.

It’s kind of hard to pin down because on a fresh app load it usually is working just fine. But as you use the app the behavior starts to creep up. What I experience is that when doing the two finger scroll, I’ll flick and it may take a couple of seconds before the scroll initiates. And when it does, it doesn’t have the inertia you are used to. It’s like a “hard” start and stop.

It’s kind of hard to QA since I unfortunately can’t give straight repro instructions. So I apologize for that. But I’ve now noticed it pop back up in any instance (outside of stage manager even which was what I was talking about in earlier posts here). This is an M1 iPad if that makes any difference.

Edit: I should also point out that this is just with the trackpad. Scrolling behavior seems fine when using the touchscreen.

What do you think of Eastward?

I think the pixel art style is great. At the beginning I also thought the game was very cool with a very intriguing story, but then the game started to ask me to do totally useless things for progressing in the story, like: go find the berry for cooking the meal for this person for no reason, but then something stupid happens so...

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

It’s one of the prettiest pixel art games out there, but it’s absolutely the most boring game I’ve played recently that I can recall.

It took me months to get through it.

Some of my worst grades were in Econ class because it’s really hard for me to get beyond the fact that the answers to Econ questions always have an asterisk at the end since we don’t know what the future will hold.

It’s like, yeah we say “all things equal” something should happen in a certain way. And in the vacuum of a classroom maybe that’s OK. But it’s really all just educated guesses. And really that’s the best that we can do, and maybe that’s just fine. But when I hear stuff like “economists predict [x]…” I kinda roll my eyes.

You’re telling me having a weed shop on every corner in OKC would somehow make it so the supply wildly outweighed the demand and some of those businesses would have to close? Crazy. /s

In my mind, I’ve recently had this made up scenario where a banker is saying, “I’m sorry, we can’t help you with that home loan. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to rubber stamp approve 50 business loans for weed shops.”

I’m not anti-weed by any stretch. But there simply are too many weed shops, and we might actually see the “invisible hand” work as intended here.

Links to YouTube videos don't open in the YouTube app but as the web version

I checked what kind of links are tied to the YouTube app and it’s alle the usual links for YouTube (Youtou.be, Youtube. com, etc;). Yet, I click on a Yt video link and it opens up a browser window. I didn’t change anything, whether in the options of Voyager nor which links should open with which app. Any idea what is going...

I’ve seen this too. Like the deep linking is messed up for something.

Somehow over the weekend I forgot that this clown show was still going, but I guess we have another week of the GOP punching themselves in the face and then blaming democrats for not helping them when it’d literally take about five (out of 200+) GOP members to vote in Jeffries and end it.

In other news, your local city government said they will not be building dedicated bike lanes because there are not enough cyclists to justify it.

Must be nice to be able to throw money at things like this.

The reason smart phone sales have dropped — in my armchair point of view — is that everyone has a cell phone already, and the normal person doesn’t need to update their phone every year. I feel like I’m a pretty technical dude, but I still have a iPhone 12Pro because it still runs everything worth using. And it’s still fast. It’s less that I’m tired of this form factor, and more that I literally don’t need a new phone. And I feel like that’s most people most of the time.

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know if I saw it mentioned in the article, but Buccee’s is great not only for the bathrooms and food, but you’ll find signs all over showing exactly what you’ll get paid for working there. And for a gas station, the wages seem pretty good.

You don’t see other gas stations posting their wages for every customer to see is all I’m sayin’. All the way up to general manager showing they make something like $150k+.

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah I don’t see any of that garbage, either.

Cat Lovers Rejoice As New Medicine Will Extend Cat Lifespan To 30 Years (www.boredpanda.com)

there is a silent threat that affects kitties – chronic kidney disease. It is a complex and irreversible ailment that typically manifests at around 10 years old in cats, affecting an astounding 1 in 3 felines. As cats age, they gradually lose their kidney function, which significantly compromises their quality of life....

But maybe this can be a thing for my next cat (whenever that is).

I thought you were supposed to get behind someone on your “team” no matter how criminal the charges.

Weird. Weird how…both sides might not be the same.

I’ve had some bunny ears for about 20 years now and they still work fine for the local channels. Never really need or watch regular tv unless it’s the Super Bowl or Olympics or a storm is coming.

But it’s nice to have.

Everyone: “Please just give us a 60fps mode.”

Rockstar: “What about…the opposite of that?”

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a good idea. Perhaps something is wonky on the network side.

For what it’s worth, I guess, I have an AppleTV and two HomePod minis in different rooms and they all talk to each other. I don’t even know which one of them is acting as the main hub (I think it’s the AppleTV).

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not even sure I know what that is.

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

Oh I get what you’re saying now.

But, unfortunately, no. I don’t believe that’s the case here. I can interact with the group chat once I get it back into the “normal” view. It just randomly shows me these three comments — and also a failed FaceTime call — from 2022 when I launch Messages. Then I tap on the chat in the list and it shows me the whole discussion from the latest comments.

Weirdest bug.

I bought some of the Zero Calorie kind this weekend.

My friends and I thought it tasted pretty good, honestly. What I COULDN’T find were full sized cans of it. I wanted to buy a 12 pack, but could only find the little cans in a 10 pack.

That said, one of my friends bought a 20oz of the regular, super sugar kind. And…I didn’t like it as much. The zero calorie one tasted better to me 100%.

I’m kinda the opposite. I thought the first game was kinda boring because it was just snow and snow and snow with tall buildings.

DC had lots of different locations and settings; a lot more interesting to me.

And to be fair I lived near dc for a year so seeing how well they recreated that area certainly helped.

It’s far easier to just not use Amazon than it is to not own a phone or computer.

Yes, it sucks there are no good options to buy an “ethical” phone, but phones are basically a necessity. Instead of shopping from Amazon you can shop from tons of other places.

My series 5 had had a big drop in battery life, too. I hope they figure it out because I do like the update.

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

If they only would have kept 3D Touch. This feature was twice as powerful back then.

Right now you can only move the cursor and select (by tapping with another finger). But you can’t de-select. You could do all that with just your thumb with 3D Touch.

I’m…not positive if I like the Watch updates yet.

So far the update has felt pretty buggy, with some complications acting weird and flashing when I Raise to Wake.

I’m going to assume this is a short term thing, and the watch needs to get settled after the update. But I have noticed a precipitation complication not updating correctly until I open up the weather app.

So fingers crossed this fixes itself after a few hours.

I’m laughing at the thought of this plugged into a dock with the phone flaccidly hanging off to the side.

garretble,
@garretble@lemmy.world avatar

I do this with my iPad a lot, though obviously not a full “desktop experience.” It’s close enough for normal stuff.

I wonder how much different ios is versus iPadOS in terms of allowing for something like stage manager to work on the phone if it’s plugged in. I imagine it may be non trivial right now. But obviously they could always make changes.
