  • The whole set of NES Mega-Man games had amazing soundtracks, although 2 is the best. There’s barely a story there, but the gameplay is solid.
  • Final Fantasy VI has Dancing Mad, and that alone would be enough, but the whole damn thing is just amazing, especially the Opera.
  • Similarly, Final Fantasy VII had a stellar soundtrack, including the holy-shit-this-is-amazing One Winged Angel.
    • All Final Fantasy games have great soundtracks, but these two are my faves
  • Someone mentioned Terraria, and I would be remiss if I didn’t second it. Not much story there, but I’ve been playing it for like 12 years and I’m still happy every time I start it up.
  • The Elder Scrolls games from Morrowind on all have bangin’ soundtracks. Oblivion had the best one (although Morrowind and Skyrim are both better games, IMHO).
  • Tempest 2000 for the Atari Jaguar of all things had a phenomenal soundtrack. Seriously, it it was one of the first games in the US to have its soundtrack sold in stores. And it stands up.

I’ll add more if I think of them. Most of the others I can think of have already been mentioned.

ETA:

  • Chrono Cross, I can’t believe I forgot it! That OP is unforgettable, and yet somehow I managed to forget it! The game itself pales in comparison to its predecessor (Chrono Trigger, which also has a great soundtrack), but it’s not bad.
  • On a similar note, the original Wild Arms had an excellent soundtrack with a western theme. Actually, the whole Wild Arms series has good music, but I just couldn’t get past one of the main mechanics that showed up in 2 and stick around.
  • Another one I can’t believe I forgot, Nights: into Dreams had the best soundtrack on the Sega Saturn. It’s just perfect for the game, not a bad tune in there.
EddyBot,

the soundtrack of one of the most popular mods Calamity for Terraria is also way too good than it ever should be

LegionEris, in Newer games have bad achievements and difficulty options right?

Tbh, I don’t give a fuck about trophies or achievements. I don’t have a single platinum trophy despite having a ps4 for like seven years. I played Fallout 4 on Survival because it was fun. It’s a good balance for gunplay. I like the immersion of saving on sleep. It’s actually a damn good survival mode, and you should do it even without a trophy.

It is basically two games in one. The Clocktown/‘sidequest’ time loop game, and the traditional Zelda dungeon game. I tend to agree that the latter is mostly just not good. The dungeons don’t improve with the existence of the time mechanic - in fact they needed to add a mechanic to slow time down because of how poorly the two designs mesh, which is kind of antithetical to the whole initial conceit, in my opinion.

The Clocktown Game, on the other hand, I think is really cool. You get to see all the routines and problems that characters have over those three days, and nudge events towards desired outcomes. Exploring how all their lives intersect, and how they react in the literal face of impending doom, allows for some really cool stories and moments.

It’s a Clocktown game trapped in the body of a Zelda game.

M500,

Just today I started to think that this game is basically Zelda + animal crossing.

MajorasMaskForever,

needed to add a mechanic to slow time down

The devs actually thought of that. There are two auxiliary time control songs. One slows down time by ~50%, the other jumps ahead to the next dawn/dusk. MM3D revised the latter to allow to jump to any top of the hour across the next 12 hours.

Any of the scarecrows around town teach it to you just by talking to them, but they do so by describing the songs, not teaching you the notes

@bogdugg@sh.itjust.works avatar

I realize this. What I meant is, ‘that’s why it was added’, rather than ‘I wish that this existed.’ Relying on the time slow is recognizing that the dungeon wasn’t really designed around the time loop in the first place. It just doesn’t feel like a very cohesive design.

Forbidden_Acadia, in I hate Majora’s Mask!

I absolutely love this game. It was great because you have to do actual puzzles, which for sure gets annoying sometimes. But figuring how to fit everything together with the time constraints feel much more gratifying to succeed at. It also stops me from just endlessly running around doing random stuff for no reason like the Witcher or something 🙃. Different strokes for sure!

korewa, in I’m playing Metroid Prime 2 and am a little stressed about the ammo. Would using an infinite ammo cheat ruin the game?

Play like you want I cheat in games because I can only play for 30 minutes or an hour a week

korewa,

I also play to decompress

Somehow, nobody's mentioned Cyberpunk 2077 yet. Every track in this game goes so incredibly hard. The in-game radio stations are all full of absolute bangers, and even the ambient world music is fantastic and sets the mood for every scene. It's one of the few games whose soundtracks I listen to on its own.

harmonea,
@harmonea@kbin.social avatar

I suspect patient gamers have held off on this one given its relatively high system requirements, need for patches to improve performance, and super recent expansion. I'm sure you're right, but speaking for myself, it's not on my to-play list for at least another year. (Only mentioning it since you seem surprised)

Damn yeah you got me there. I forgot about Cyperbunk. Ponpon SHIT will never escape from my mind. XD

Super Mario Galaxy. Full orchestral music, and the game is cracking too.

Hades, Hades, and Hades. I listen to that OST all the time it’s just so good. Also DOOM 2016

PrivateNoob,

You’re the 2nd one who suggested Hades. Did you find it hard as a rougelike?

SolOrion,

As far as roguelites go, no. There’s even an option you can toggle on to make it easier every run if you’re not there to git gud.

PrivateNoob,

Oh that’s reassuring. Thank you!

Rose, in Old games you can nominate for the Steam Awards (in any category)

Perhaps like many here, I haven’t played enough 2023 games to make a confident choice in every category of the Steam Awards, so I looked for games from the prior years, released in 2023 on Steam.

While I don’t agree with the idea of a 2019 game being named the game of the year in 2024, the choice is there and we might as well use it and remind Valve that their system is flawed.

LetterboxPancake, in I’m playing Metroid Prime 2 and am a little stressed about the ammo. Would using an infinite ammo cheat ruin the game?

That doesn’t sound too patient

I can also recommend FTL, Risk of Rain and Risk of Rain 2. Really good OSTs, I’m listening to all of them regularly. They’ve also got great gameplay! But they’re rogue-likes so basically no story in case that bothers you.

sverit,
@sverit@feddit.de avatar

RoR 1 and 2 are my two most favorite OSTs. So unique and awesome.

Ropianos,
@Ropianos@feddit.de avatar

Yeah, I think it’s also very impressive how they have different styles but are still very similar in some ways. Most noticeable with Arctic and Antarctic Oscillation.

And “The rain formerly known as purple”, “Coalescence” and “The raindrop that fell to the sky” are just soooo good. Could listen to them on repeat (and have done so (: )

Owljfien,

Into The Doldrums makes its way randomly into my brain so often

all-knight-party, in I finally got to finishing the Titanfall 2 Campaign
@all-knight-party@kbin.run avatar

I really enjoyed the PvE Frontier Defense mode too after the campaign. Played that for a long while

Sternhammer,
@Sternhammer@aussie.zone avatar

I played Frontier Defence obsessively for years and maxed out all of the titans (which really enhances the experience). A fully unlocked Scorch is such a beast!

It’s still possible to play on console but hard to get games near me (Australia). Luckily it’s quite playable on more active European or North American servers.

Chais, (edited ) in What are you playing this week?
@Chais@sh.itjust.works avatar

Finished Batman: Arkham Asylum yesterday. Also started Witcher 3 a while ago and have yet to finish that.

_ed,
