Bishma, in What is the main thing you write on your Obsidian Vault?
@Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

D&D session planning. Being able to query all my plans and notes is super handy.

SamXavia,
@SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

@Bishma Nice it seems like a good amount of people use Obsidian for D&D

kionite231, in Looking to try obsidian, but the sync seems expensive. Do you pay for sync, or are there other alternatives?

If you don’t want to pay then just use syncthing. It’s free and cross platform.

clearnew,
@clearnew@mastodon.social avatar

@kionite231 @nieceandtows I’m in the Apple ecosystem so I’ve been using iCloud for the same reason of the cost. My vault is relatively small and simple though. I’m assuming that once it starts to get larger and more complex I’m going to have to buck up for Sync.

PixxlMan, in What are your thoughts about Obsidian not being Open Source?

Honestly, the whole thing felt like a textbook example of a modern FOSS program (based on the website, the premise etc) that I was quite surprised when I found out it wasn’t open source. I think it’s unfortunate.

ChaosAD,

I had the same impression

grabyourmotherskeys, in Can we talk about how bad the mobile app is?

I don’t find those issues exist in the Android app. I would like a much faster start up time but other than that, the app is great.

Sheltac,

I’ve used obsidian on android very briefly (I was still on android when I started using it) and the issues are definitely there. Maybe it’s not as half-baked as the iPad app, and doesn’t stand out as much in the horrible android app landscape, but the issues are certainly there.

grabyourmotherskeys,

I am sorry you are getting downvoted for expressing your opinion. I realize people who use iPhones don’t like Android. It’s why they prefer I phones, right?

Anyway, I consider it a good app. Like you said the sync is great (I pay for that feature happily). The start up time does bug me.

To deal with the UI issues I use a plugin that replaces the menu when you pull down from the top of the app. It lets you type in a command (any command) so really I basically don’t use the menus much. For me the app is mostly used for reviewing data on the fly, for which I find it more than adequate.

You can always edit your markdown files with any other app and Obsidian will handle that well (just make sure it runs to sync). Not sure if you can access the files on the iPhone like that, though?

Sheltac,

Maybe that’s where I’m going wrong. I want an app that gives me everything obsidian does on PC, with the same ease, on my phone. But maybe that’s just not easy to achieve.

Downvotes shmownvotes 😁

I used android pretty much since it first released, I’m entitled not to like it.

grabyourmotherskeys,

As a developer, I can see the line they are walking. It’s a choice they made to try to keep the experience the same but using completely different interfaces. There’s going to be rough edges. I am fine with it but I do know what you mean. I’m not doing any heavy lifting on mobile. Capture, review, checking items off lists - that’s what I’m using it for.

I think the app is great but within the parameters of the big choice to work the way it does.

I actually used to use emacs on my phone for a long time via an ssh session so I guess I’m fairly tolerant of unorthodox interfaces (was doing this to have full org-mode experience). To each their own.

Sheltac,

Yeah I mean compared to emacs of all things, obsidian on iPhone is a dream.

Compared to apple’s own app, for instance? It’s a lot behind. And I don’t mean in terms of what you can put on notes (my notes are almost 100% text-only and I want nothing but markdown), but in terms of how usable the interface is.

judisohn,
@judisohn@mas.to avatar

@Sheltac @grabyourmotherskeys

I find I have to remember to open the iOS app daily to make sure it’s in sync with the vaults on 2 Macs. I’m also mindful to disable all non-essential plugins on phone.

Do you have an example of an app that’s offers a great phone and desktop experience? I find that it’s often less than ideal on desktop to prioritize the phone, or like can be challenging to navigate with your finger what was meant for a mouse or trackpad.

    @Colman @Sheltac @grabyourmotherskeys if I go a couple of weeks without loading on iOS then it can take as long as 15 minutes to fully sync and it can crash a bit.

    I think I found the offending plugin that wasn’t happy on mobile and that’s why the delay thing you mentioned is something I’ll check out.

    On mobile I just want to check something or throw a quick note on my daily page. I don’t do much more than that.

    @Colman @Sheltac @grabyourmotherskeys I use #raindropio and #omnivore more on mobile and then sync them to #obsidian on desktop.

    DrakeRichards, in Looking to try obsidian, but the sync seems expensive. Do you pay for sync, or are there other alternatives?

    If you only use iOS and a Mac then iCloud will work fine. It’s only a problem on Windows where the iCloud implementation is buggy.

    EntropyPure, in What is the main thing you write on your Obsidian Vault?

    Documentation, for personal reference. Stuff I rather not reinvent down the line.

    Could set up a wiki, but I like the flexible nature of Obsidian.

    InfiniteFlow, in 1.4.0 New Feature: Properties
    @InfiniteFlow@lemmy.world avatar

    Is this just a new way to use/render the YAML metadata or something different?

    If so, it is great to be able to have live links, tags, etc. inside the block. Not too sure about the editor, though. It seems to increase the disconnect with what I think is one of the big selling points of Obsidian: notes are just .md files. The properties editor feels like something different, not part of the note’s text…

    grabyourmotherskeys,

    There’s more details here: obsidian.md/changelog/2023-07-26-desktop-v1.4.0/

    Sounds like a nice front end and utilities to manage Properties, which are stored as frontmatter adhering to the practice of it all being plain text. Which I like. :)

    InfiniteFlow,
    @InfiniteFlow@lemmy.world avatar

    So it does look like it’s a UI convenience layer for the YAML block. That is nice indeed. And the ability to have links there will save me from having to replicate some info right after the YAML block exactly because I need those links! Neat!

    nietscape, in Does anyone here use Obsidian and Rocketbook?

    Check out this handy link courtesy of the Obisidan discord. Syncing between devices can be somewhat cumbersome if you don’t want to pay for Obsidian Sync, but a lot of people (myself included) have success with using FolderSync on android with whatever cloud service you have your notes on.

    bigredgiraffe, in Looking for a URL Bookmarking Solution with Obsidian

    I have been using the app Raindrop for this function, the integration for obsidian is awesome. Raindrop also lets you highlight and tag your bookmarks and it saves those into obsidian as well. The share function through the iOS share sheet is really great too, you can categorize and add tags right then too, definitely recommend it in general. Site is raindrop.io

    I don’t think you need a subscription for most of it, maybe the highlights, I pay for one for the permanent library feature and so it will stick around so I can’t remember but they do have a free option.

    princessnorah,
    @princessnorah@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

    Which Obsidian plugin are you using for it? Is it this one: github.com/…/obsidian-raindrop-highlights-plugin

    bigredgiraffe,

    I had to go and check and it seems I am actually synching the highlights through Readwise currently. I kept switching back and forth, I have used that plugin in the past and I remember it working well.

    ETA: I also use Readwise Reader and it is awesome, I have to check out this Omnivore app that someone suggested though!

    MrPoopyButthole,

    I also use Raindrop for general bookmarking! It’s not open source ir anything, but it’s free option is excellent and I think they still have a standard export option 👍

    pivic,
    @pivic@lemmy.ca avatar

    Wow! Thanks a lot! So weird, I’ve used all kinds of bookmarking services and built my own with the Dataview plugin in Obsidian… This is very easy. I can confirm that the sync part works without a Raindrop subscription.

    bigredgiraffe,

    Awesome! I also have used a bunch and Raindrop is really good at organizing lots of links which I thought they all were until I found it hah.

    haulyard, in What is the main thing you write on your Obsidian Vault?
    @haulyard@lemmy.world avatar

    Notes at work. Meetings, projects, one on one conversations. I also have a template for each person I’ve met that makes it easy to see where they’re located, what company and technologies they’re related to, and links to past meetings I’ve had with them. I also use it for task management.

    anotherlemmyuser,

    For your notes at work, do you create a bunch of new files for new notes? I am interested in how you do folder structure and naming.

    DmMacniel, in What is the main thing you write on your Obsidian Vault?
    @DmMacniel@feddit.de avatar

    I have a vault for general journaling, for my pathfinder 2e campaign notes, my characters (TDE, Dnd5e, Starfinder) campaign notes, and my writing project.

    So… several Vaults for different aspects.

    SamXavia,
    @SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

    @DmMacniel So you use different Vaults instead of it all in one? How do you seem to juggle different vaults it feels hard to manage one sometimes.

    DmMacniel,
    @DmMacniel@feddit.de avatar

    Yup, different vaults since the topics don’t really intersect with each other, or rather shouldn’t. I would like if Obsidian don’t open with the latest vault open, but instead its splash screen so that I can select which Vault I want to open/work on.

    ellane,
    @ellane@pkm.social avatar

    @SamXavia @DmMacniel I'm happy with one vault for most things, mixing personal with business. The only times I create new vaults is for experimenting with different setups (that I don't want to break my regular workflow), and in preparation for sharing with others.

    SamXavia,
    @SamXavia@kbin.run avatar

    @ellane That's pretty much what I do, even know I have many different areas that I enjoy writing about from business to TV Shows it's nice to see it all in one place and makes me not have to go to other vaults that I will most likely forget about.

    Boozilla, in How do you personally use Obsidian?
    @Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

    I run RPG games for my friends. I create a new vault for each adventure. I typically create document folders like: locations, npcs, objects, events, rules, notes.

    For common stuff that I use in every adventure, I just copy those files and folders into the new vault from the most recent old vault (the rules folder, for example).

    I love how lightweight and simple this is in Obsidian.

    I use links where it makes sense to me, and I don’t worry overly much about link counts or the graph view. (I use both, I just don’t stress over it). The tool should work for me, not vice versa.

    I don’t use plug-ins, but I do use style sheets and game specific fonts. Autohotkey is also great for making repetitive and/or complicated formatting easier. Getting the fonts embedded into the first project was a technical nuisance, but now I just copy that into every new vault.

    Watching YouTube videos made by Obsidian power users, I’m super impressed by the things some people do with it. But I prefer keeping my workflow fairly simple. If I spend too much time messing with the tool, that feels counterproductive to me.

    boatswain, in How do you personally use Obsidian?

    I have two vaults: one for general purpose notes, and one for the homebrew D&D campaign I’m running. In the regular Notes vault, there’s very little cross-lining except for one section where I was studying for a certification. In the D&D vault, I use links and tags quite a bit.

    Emotional_Series7814,

    Part of my creative projects vault is ideas for a homebrew D&D campaign! What's yours like? I need to flesh out my world a little and add a few spicy situations before it's ready for players.

    boatswain,

    I’m actually really happy with how world building went. I came up with a basic idea: a world where magic and non-humans hadn’t existed for thousands of years, but suddenly magic begins to return–kind of like Shadowrun, but without the cyberpunk. Then I added in a group modeled vaguely on the Overseers from Dishonored to be a force of anti-magic social sentiment.

    The next step was a couple of prequel oneshots. Since I’m bad at oneshots, those ended up being 4-5 sessions each. They were set about 30 and then about 15 years before the return of magic, and allowed the players to become familiar with the basic setting and to introduce some places and characters.

    The crucial step was then doing a few rounds of Microscope with the players. Using that as a worlbuilding tool after we already built a shaded understanding of the basics of the world allowed us to collaboratively generate a really detailed and interesting history.

    Between the oneshots and Microscope, the players are all really invested in the world they’re playing in. I can throw out references to things and they actually catch them and are excited by them, because they’re either things that their oneshot characters did or experienced, or they’re things they created themselves in Microscope.

    Needless to say this all made for tons of notes in Obsidian.

    Jaysyn, in Obsidian: Syncing Your Thinking with Syncthing
    @Jaysyn@kbin.social avatar

    SyncTrayzor is a nice GUI package & tray icon for SyncThing. I've been using it for years.

    biscotty666,

    I haven’t used that one. There’s a gtk gui on flathub, too. I just used the browser interface here because it’s universally available (tmk).
