Sheltac,

I wouldn’t buy an automatic bike, coz I ride bikes for fun.

The daily get-to-work shitbox? I don’t want to babysit the gearbox, just do your thing while I chill to some tunes.

Sheltac,

Well, I guess it’s time to finally read the wheel of time.

Sheltac,

Also no one else being there.

Also being in my home.

Also getting to work in pants.

So I guess nothing, then 👌

Sheltac,

Interesting, I always thought it had to do with Android’s ungodly software stack which at some point involves, of all things, fucking java.

Sheltac,

Wait, thats is very different from what I read back in the day. I know there was a point at, I dunno, android 5 where they started doing something different with java, but my impression was that android always ran a JVM of sorts. And frankly, given how it performs even on the highest-end devices, that was really easy to believe.

I guess I need to do some research now.

Sheltac,

There you go, that’s exactly what I was thinking. Thanks!

Sheltac,

I thought you fed on sovereignty like the rest of us?

You’re missing out, bruvva

Sheltac,

Jay-Zed as a joke is definitely something I’ve done.

Sheltac,

I’ve taken to staying away from “all” just to try and isolate myself from the madness that those people are involved in. What an absolute acid trip of a country.

Sheltac,

That’s what they always say, but no one considers the starting conditions.

Imagine you’re fighting a dead fat guy. Sounds easy, right? 300kg of dead weight just waiting for you to bury your fists in it.

But now imagine the fat guy starts next to you, standing. Can you stop 300kg of dead flabby dude from burying you? Didn’t think so. You’re gonna die a gruesome suffocating death under some guy’s quadruple chin because you didn’t consider the implications.

Come on. Be better, people.

Sheltac,

I just bought it the other day and went in blind with a friend. My god is it an insane game.

My friend isn’t even an engineer and he was talking about refactoring.

I’ll make an engineer out of him yet, you’ll see.

Sheltac,

The only reason you get that title, on either count, is that we decided to brexit.

(Using the word “decided” in the widest possible sense)

Sheltac,

Or, you know, you slammed the the bit you held into the body of the phone with a satisfying “pling”.

Now get off my lawn.

Sheltac,

The 80% and wireless charging is where I draw the line. That’s way too much convenience to lose for me.

I’d just rather have batteries replaced every 2-3 years, which I’ve never actually found myself doing anyway. By the time the battery is going, the phone tends to be on its last legs as well.

Sheltac,

This, for me, it’s essentially as good as it gets in the current landscape.

Sheltac,

Hi. Friendly reminder to keep personal activity out of work devices.

Until we meet again!

Sheltac,

Hi. I hold 3 degrees in engineering. 100% of what you said is wrong.

Latex is the norm in any engineering publication I’ve ever been involved with, be it as author, reviewer, or editor. The ones that do take word do so reluctantly and only in a way they can readily convert to latex later.

Judging a quality of a word based on how a paper looks is perfectly valid. I’m disinclined to trust research by people not willing to put in the minuscule effort of typesetting a paper. What else did they cut corners on?

Sheltac,

Even then, you have pretty much no way of knowing if there’s an iris. So it’s all fun and games until SLAM, all your atoms gets squished into metal.

Sheltac,

I’d settle for hiding photos in albums from recents, as that would tell me what I need to organise and don’t.

Sheltac,

Could even flip them horizontally for extra spiciness.

Sheltac,

They called OP’s bluff. They should sue, but reddit knows they won’t.

Sheltac,

No it wouldn’t. Phones aren’t cheap.

Sheltac,

That’s soon to change when regulations come in to force apple to allow sideloading.

Sheltac,

I guess hoovering up all your data ain’t enough.

Sheltac,

Not optimality. Maximum profit. Very different from any definition of optimal I would personally use.

Sheltac,

What a little, ridiculous, narrow-minded view of the world.

Sheltac,

Surely this is bait and we’re falling for it?

Sheltac,

My landlord remortgaged the house to pay for a year-long trip around the world.

I guess it’s good he’s enjoying my money.

Sheltac,

todoist

Great minds think alike! Todoist keeps what I need to do on a daily basis, and obsidian holds the knowledge framework that sustains everything.

Sheltac,

That’s interesting, do you have a link where I could read more about that?

Sheltac,

Hah, I only knew that name from Daisy 2.0, turns out is a whole rabbit hole!

Sheltac,

I don’t mind paying for an app, but fuck subscriptions. It’s dirt cheap and all, but I still won’t pay for it.

I’ll have a look at Organic though, that sounds right up my alley. If it’s open source, I can even have a look at raising a PR or two to pay them back.

Sheltac,

I’ve used obsidian on android very briefly (I was still on android when I started using it) and the issues are definitely there. Maybe it’s not as half-baked as the iPad app, and doesn’t stand out as much in the horrible android app landscape, but the issues are certainly there.

Sheltac, (edited )

Do you use the kanban* plug-in? That’s one of the ones that seems to work worst for me. At some point it wouldn’t let me write on cards because the submit button was hidden behind the keyboard.

But that’s a plug-in, though, not the main app.

Sheltac,

Is that a plug-in?

Sheltac,

I’ll have to take a look, thanks!

Sheltac,

Maybe that’s where I’m going wrong. I want an app that gives me everything obsidian does on PC, with the same ease, on my phone. But maybe that’s just not easy to achieve.

Downvotes shmownvotes 😁

I used android pretty much since it first released, I’m entitled not to like it.

Sheltac,

Yeah I mean compared to emacs of all things, obsidian on iPhone is a dream.

Compared to apple’s own app, for instance? It’s a lot behind. And I don’t mean in terms of what you can put on notes (my notes are almost 100% text-only and I want nothing but markdown), but in terms of how usable the interface is.

Sheltac,

mathematically simple

And, as far as I can see, neutral. Doesn’t put you in a bubble like other social networks do, because it’s not trying to milk you for engagement.

Sheltac,

Imagine you owned a library. That library is in principle open, anyone can go in and read books, browse the web, wank in the toilets, etc. It’s a good place and it takes you some doing to keep it so.

Now imagine a bus full of book-hating pyromaniacs parks outside (in this metaphor, there is such a thing as book-specific pyromaniacs, just for the sake of illustration).

Surely you’d hang up a “no pyromaniacs” sign?

Sheltac,

Mastodon, however, might end up in a bad place.

Sheltac,

The Nier automata soundtrack is on another level. What a collection of absolute masterpieces.

Weight of the world still brings a tear to my eye.

Sheltac,

Yeah I though I was gonna outgrow metal.

Boy was I wrong.

Sheltac,

That’s where I started and ended up staying alllll of these years 😁

Sheltac,

That’s an interesting perspective. I find caffeine really useful, as I use it as pre-workout in the morning (I train strength most days of the week around 7am).

I stay away from it otherwise, though, mostly for the reasons you cite. Don’t want to be overly dependent on it.

Sheltac,

I had the file duplication bug a lot whenever I tried using iCloud on windows.
