You have been sentenced to life in a micronation of your choosing (Sealand, Molossia, etc.) The micronation must have actual land and you may never leave that land. What micronation do you choose?...
For me it’s watching petapixel (a photography gear review channel) on youtube, not because i want photography gear, but because i think canada is beautiful especially in winters and so are the pictures in the video
I watch stealth campers on YouTube, even though I have zero interest in camping myself. I’m impressed and entertained by their ingenuity and explorer approach to things. It’s also a tiny push back against a corpo-fashy culture that wants people to “spend money here or move along”. These stealth camper people are harming no one (and the good ones pick up a lot of litter). But of course the “people of Nextdoor” suburban types flip the fuck out over stranger danger, so the campers have to avoid getting caught. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want some rando squatting in my backyard, either. I’m talking about people camping in parks, parking lots, medians, interstitial woodlands, etc.
IPA is a great comparison (and I hate how “IPA” has become synonymous with “beer”). I like blue cheese, but I agree it can quickly overwhelm. I prefer to go easy with it in recipes. For salad dressings I prefer the ones that are toned down a bit.
I’m a lover of physical books but I’m looking to get an e-reader as well, for those books that are hard to find physical copies of, or are just very expensive....
I’ve had an Oasis since 2017 and I generally like it. I am not crazy about all my e-books being hosted in the Amazon cloud. But I made that bed over a decade ago, and will have to lie in it. I do love the convenience of e-books, too.
One thing that annoys me about Kindle is that if it can’t connect to the Amazon cloud for some reason, it will burn through the battery pretty quickly as it desperately tries to connect over and over again. This is an issue in my house, because my WiFi is filtered by a Pi Hole. So I end up leaving my Oasis in Airplane Mode most of the time. The battery lasts a lot longer that way. When I want to sync or download a new e-book, I just take it out of Airplane Mode for a couple of minutes.

You ever see a dog that’s got its leash tangled the long way round a table leg, and it just cannot grasp what the problem is or how to fix it? It can see all the components laid out in front of it, but it’s never going to make the connection....
Thinking that tailgating the vehicle directly in front of them will make thousands of other vehicles in front of that vehicle magically go faster. And many other reckless car-brain stunts.
LOL, I also do the passive-aggressive slowdown thing. 99% of the time it works. But then there’s that rare psycho that refuses to get off your ass just to…uh…prove a point…by slowing themselves down? There was a post on schmeddit several years ago where a guy came to a complete stop in the middle of nowehere with the tailgator just sitting 1" from his bumper.
It may be helpful to think of it as a stream or a river, and not a collection of individual drivers. We can only control ourselves, not the stream. People working so hard to put themselves and others at risk are maybe shaving a minute or so off of their commute. Just not worth the risk.
As I’ve gotten older I realized that, even though I like the occasional drink, it’s just not worth it to me any more. I find myself drinking less and less. Almost never at this point.
I’ve also noticed my friends and family are a lot more fun to hang out with when they are not drinking than when they are. People get so loud and obnoxious when they drink. They think they are fun and funny but they’re really just annoying.
Thank you! It has never made sense to me, either. Hoarding gold did make some sense back in the day when you were fleeing a local or regional calamity, or could expect to see a return to relative normalcy in your lifetime. But if global civilization collapses from climate change or similar, gold will have no practical value to a refugee or survivalist.
I think Deep Throat supports my point more than yours. Took forever to find out who he was, and it was a huge scandal at the time. Today it would be a yawner. Leaks are an everyday occurrence now, and very little is kept secret for long these days compared to back then.
I still love Lemmy. It’s nice to be able to post or comment without getting an automated response telling you you’re doing 15 things wrongs for trying to participate like happens on schmeddit.
I have come across a lot’s of people like these. like 99% of them. Sometimes it makes me think twice if what i am saying is wrong? What’s wrong with them. Is it so hard to swallow your pride and acknowledge that the other person is speaking facts? When they come to know they are wrong they proceed to insult/make fun of...
Online it can become a competitive thing. They still want to “win” the argument even if the light comes on and they realize they have incorrect or incomplete information and the other side has made better arguments with better evidence. I suspect most people fall into this trap at some point in online forums. I definitely have. Guilty as charged.
And not to excuse this behavior, but part of it comes from poor sportsmanship and lack of grace from damned near everyone vis a vis Twitter/X/Facebook/reddit. People who “win” a competition like this are quick to gloat on how they “owned” the other person. Worse than this, trying to be reasonable and open-minded in these spaces often comes across as weakness.
There is a small movement of folks who call for radical empathy. This is where you do your level best to make a good faith effort to fully understand and see the merits of the other side’s arguments even if you don’t agree. That way lies learning and growth.
I agree with you that it shouldn’t come across as weakness, and to a mature person it is sign of strength. I should have phrased it better, but my intention was to say that in these online forums many of the ‘spectators’ (who up and down vote, and/or pile on) seem to read nuanced arguments and open-minded thinking as being “weak”.
In other words, there’s often too many points scored for having an aggressive style, nasty sarcasm, insults, etc.
I had abdominal surgery several years ago and the surgeon mentioned that they left some clips inside. To this day I have no idea if they are magnetic or not.
Thanks. I did a bit of Dr. Google research (and everything on the internet is true!).
It seems that surgical clips are usually not magnetic, but it depends on the type and year of manufacture, etc. Mine are several years old. So yeah, I would definitely bring it up if I ever need an MRI. I’m used to doctors acting annoyed and condescending, so what’s one more time?
Hopefully they don’t perform MRIs on unconscious patients. Nothing in 'Murican healthcare would surprise me.
I’m thinking past could work better, as you could pretend to be mute or have a very limited vocabulary. Future could be anything and will probably have an uninhabitable atmosphere.
Is it shallow, or petty, to decide based on name alone? Yeah, pretty much, but there’s probably something, a product or service or site, that the name has made you gloss right over it or jump to it ASAP....
Warby Parker. Something about the name just completely frosts me. I know I should grow up and give them a chance (because Luxotica is fucking evil). But it really turns me off. “Warby Parker”…sounds like the name of some kid who’s dad owns racehorses.
I tried Zenni a couple of times. Really wanted to like them. But the glasses they sent me were horrible. I do have a somewhat complex prescription, though. I suspect for basic prescriptions they are OK.
Glad I’m not the only one. I am highly averse to anything that sounds like a “lifestyle brand”. Hollister and such. I’ll never understand people who wear expensive brand name t-shirts and provide free advertising for giant corporations. Ryan George made a pretty funny YouTube video about this strange phenomenon.
Thank you! I get so tired of the generational generalizations. And you’re right, it’s getting more difficult for working people of all ages to navigate this late stage capitalism shit show.

Those dumb people are confusing privacy with secrecy.
A good example of privacy is a bathroom. Everyone knows what goes on in bathrooms. It’s not a secret. But you still close the door. Do those people with “nothing to hide” want the government recording and storing video of them every time they use the bathroom or have sex? If they answer “no”, then they value their privacy. (If they answer “yes” they should probably seek therapy).
An example of secrecy is laundering money to avoid paying taxes on it. That’s not privacy, that’s hiding something illegal.
I mean, I dont actually mind ads… within reason. But over the past few years I have watched less and less youtube content due to the ratio of ads to the actual bloody content I wanted to view....
It will hurt them a little bit, because it will drive a few people to alternative platforms. However, the majority of their user base is now captive, because they have grown dependent on Alphabet for a number of services. All they have to do is ban a few people from all of Alphabet to set the example, and then 99% of folks will either subscribe or disable their ad blockers. Because getting banned from all of their services would really, really suck for most people who depend on them. Just think of how many non-Alphabet logins would suddenly stop working (either because of federation or gmail dependencies). Not to mention their data saved to the cloud.
Unfortunately, big picture is, they will come out on top. Because of the “embrace, extend, and extinguish” model that they are veterans at. IOW, they know how to royally screw people.
I think our only glimmer of hope is the government continuing to go after monopolies. That’s not much of a hope, though.
You are more optimistic than I am, and I hope you are right. I am mildly encouraged by some of the backlash we’re seeing in the news against tech bros.
I got a lot of complaints from family, too. Especially because I block Meta. I just let them bitch and I tell them things like “those ads are broken because of malware” which isn’t entirely untrue.
I’ve been using Kagi and I like it. It’s not perfect. It’s not great. Hell, it might not even be good. But it’s better than Google. And I decided I wanted to support a search engine that does not depend on ad revenue.
