pingveno,

Also, many places have restrictions on what names they will accept. For example, I work in IT at a university. We have a fairly limited set of characters because other characters are known to cause issues with vendor products. Unfortunately, we just don’t really have much of a choice.

pingveno,

You can always wear vintage clothing, you know.

pingveno,

Those areas are also wildly romanticized. Let’s not forget that one of the ways that some Europeans got established was by trading guns to indigenous people so they could go off and kill other indigenous people for their land.

pingveno,

Now fairy tales, that’s where the brutality comes in. Ever heard of “The Death of the Little Hen” collected by the Grimm brothers? The last line is, I kid you not, “and then everyone was dead”. Gotta get those kiddos used to pandemics and family sized tombstones.

Civic Science

iflscience.com/56-percent-of-americans-dont-think…

They openly admit that they were trying to mislead surveyed people with their wording. These results were taken as tribalism on both sides:

Should schools in America teach the creation theory of Catholic priest Georges Lamaitre as part of their science curriculum?

The results were 20% yes, 53% no, 27% no opinion. Turns out the “creation theory” in question was the Big Bang Theory. No one calls the Big Bang Theory a “creation theory”. Overall, I’d call this a shit poll that isn’t good for anything beyond a chance to clutch at pearls.

Edit: How could I miss it! It’s a troll poll!

pingveno,

Same with my state. Also with voter registration update reminders. Oregon really takes its voting seriously.

And if you’re in Portland, you can always pick Pho Kim to get the sexy juices flowing.

Just as long as they’re not going to be around me for the beanie consequences to come to fruition, if you catch my drift.

Ever wonder why this thing can only go 55 MPH? Yup, my Magnum dong! Nothing slows down a truck like moving around that hunk of meat, let me tell you! Now about our date.

pingveno,

And the pig says nöff-nöff. So cute!

pingveno,

It’s not just that. You want businesses to be able to fail if they are being run poorly. That’s something that’s a lot harder with government agencies, state owned enterprises, and large companies.

  • government agencies: People rely on them by design. You can’t simply shut down the health care or welfare system because it’s being run poorly or corruptly.
  • state owned enterprises: There is pressure from the ruling class to keep even inefficiently run or corrupt SOE going because they provide jobs and patronage.
  • large companies: They become systemically important. The loss of a single large business can cascade through the economy. See: Lehman Brothers or the big auto companies during the 2008 crash.
pingveno,

Ugh, I hate the "Government should be run like a business” line. Take recessions. During a recession, businesses will typically engage in belt tightening. But government finances run on entirely different rules. They control the currency, central bank, unemployment insurance, deficit spending, and a number of other levers that can stabilize the economy. It’s the role of the government to step in and offset the business cycle. A lot of folks have very rose colored glasses of what life was like before the modern era’s governance of the economy.

pingveno,

Something like aggressive taxes on the uber-rich and comprehensive welfare for the poor, y’know?

This is why aggressive estate taxes are so incredibly critical. People shouldn’t be professional descendants. And of course welfare provides both ladder and safety net. The fools who are trying to abolish one or both are working against social mobility.

what's your best "insecure boss" story? (lemmy.world)

The image is formatted in a tweet with image format. The caption says “handle with care” over two pictures. The first picture is of an Amazon package with “fragile” written in sharpie. The second picture is on the inside the box with a paper and the text “a middle manager’s ego” on it.

pingveno,

I’m not going to blame this on insecurity, but I think ego is a bit more accurate. I was working under a senior software engineer in maybe his 50’s in my first real job out of college. A big part of our time went to maintaining a build system that was fairly large, maybe on the order of tens of thousands of lines of Ant code.

The bone that I have to pick looking back is that I got the blame when I had trouble organizing myself. Our team didn’t use any sort of issue tracker. There was absolutely zero collaboration tools beyond verbally issued instructions in meetings and email. Looking back, I realize it was madness. As an experienced developer, my manager should have had known that an issue tracker would be a high priority. Yet instead I was blamed.

pingveno,

It’s hard to tell. There definitely was poor communication on the project level due to lack of a ticketing system. That led to him distrusting me and being rather open about it. There were also issues with the position itself. I was supposed to split time between development and monitoring a queue of deployment requests. If the coworker who normally handled those requests was getting behind, I was supposed to jump in. That involved breaking concentration every 15 minutes or so.

I regret not pushing back on the demands made of me. They were entirely unreasonable and could be mitigated. Unfortunately I didn’t know what to ask for and I didn’t have the maturity to identify what I even needed to push for.

pingveno,

Well, I didn’t get much done. I relied some on internal organization with Emacs org-mode to keep track of things. I didn’t know this at the time, but that particular position had a high turnover rate. Apparently a year was pretty typical, which was how long I lasted. I have never outright quarreled with any other manager except this one.

pingveno,

I found this article on the audit. It’s also about boring but necessary things like stockpile management, automation, climate risk, and bookkeeping. It’s broken into 30 sub-audits. It sounds like all of these must be fully passed as “clean” for an audit to not be considered failing.

pingveno,

So these are basically audits that are designed to fail for political points, or at least that’s how it started?

pingveno,

I hear her headstone makes a popular loo.

pingveno,

The worst of us always live the longest.

Jimmy Carter is 99. Granted the guy’s in hospice care, but still, almost 100.

This may seem kind of stupid but I am kind of stupid, is there a list somewhere of phrases that are stupid or insensitive racially or gender biased?

I just got up from conversation with a couple of older black men, that I said “well I got to go back to work and start cracking the whip.” And it occurred to me then that it was probably a really insensitive stupid thing to say....

pingveno, (edited )

Oof. At work we currently have a project for words deemed insensitive. For the most part I think it’s worthy, but some things are overboard. The project group cast a very wide net, ignoring context and etymology. My biggest disagreement is over “black” and “white”.

Take “black box” and “white box” for types of testing. These are based merely on the properties of light. I have serious doubts about anyone ever having felt excluded by their use. And yet, we’re wasting time coming up with non-standard nomenclature to satisfy this supposed slight. There’s a whole laundry list of words like this.

pingveno, (edited )

Yeah, master has a few uses like this. Master bedrooms came about in the 20th century and had nothing to do with slavery. Then there is master in a pupil setting, though that is fairly uncommon in the US anyway. It’s more of a European/UK thing I think.

Again, I have nothing against changing things that are genuinely problematic. I just have a problem with busy work that is being demanded for items that aren’t actually offensive.

pingveno,

I too learned this the hard way, but with an image. Specifically, the “Shut Down Everything” meme. It’s an older meme and I used it in chat room with a much younger (Zoomer) crowd. The image has some resemblance to certain offensive depictions of Black people. I think it was accidental, given that it appears to be more an influence of MS Paint.

Someone got offended and talked to their manager. Unfortunately it was only months later that I got word through my manager. I would have appreciated an opportunity to offer to apologize to them face-to-face. I should have spotted the resemblance and not used the meme.

pingveno,

Well, at least until that came a day for BIG SAVINGS!

All I Want For Christmas Is You?

pingveno, (edited )

I second both of these. For the multitool, I have a Micra. I previously was carrying a larger multitool, but I found that I barely used most of the tools. When I did use them, they were compromised by being part of a multitool. The Micra has the tools I need while being barely there.

My flashlight is one I bought partially with a disaster situation in mind. Its critical feature for me is that the battery is not just USB-C rechargeable, but also can use standard AA batteries as backup. In a disaster scenario with limited access to supplies, there is an ultra-low light setting rated at 58 hours of battery life. It has a clip that goes onto the brim of baseball cap or similar to go hands free. It’s much nicer than trying to deal with a cell phone light, especially in situations where cell phone power is precious. The model is the ACEBEAM Rider RX.

pingveno,

I have a newborn niece by my brother-in-law. His fiancee also has two young boys from a previous marriage. I am looking forward to opportunities to build my relationship as an uncle with the boys. My brother and husband both don’t want kids, so it sounds like this will be the only real chance to have a close family relationship with Generation Alpha.

pingveno,

Here’s one little thing that’s helped me a tad. I make my bed every day, first thing in the morning. It feels good to start the day out with at least one thing just done and in its place.

pingveno,

Interestingly, they are into a lot of the card games that were popular when I was a kid like Pokemon, Magic the Gathering, and D & D. We are thinking about giving them a trip to a game shop for Christmas and some money for games.

pingveno,

I work in IT for a large university and there usually is some level of that. Projects are expected to pull in stakeholders so that interests from around campus have their voices heard. It takes talented facilitators to ensure that people feel comfortable speaking up. Surprisingly, coming to an agreement is rarely hard once everyone has talked it out.

pingveno,

It’s nonsense statements like this that should provide the answer to OP’s question. When push came to shove in WW2, liberalism in the US, UK, and elsewhere sided with communism against fascism.

pingveno,

Until you need to work across centuries. Then it’s eating paste level.

pingveno,

To nitpick, it reads from front to back. It just has a different concept of front and back from the West.

pingveno,
  • Bidet
  • Leatherman Micra pocketknife - all I need for most things
  • Ebike with a front platform - helps transport
  • Acoustic Bike with trunk bag - a trunk bag has a surprisingly large amount of space
  • Ortlieb panniers - add to the bikes only on an as needed basis
  • Instant Pot - it does miracles with legumes, meats, and a large variety of other dishes
  • Instant brand Air fryer - we’re working w/o a vent right now so we got this to provide an oven replacement
  • IKEA wardrobe - configured and used as a pantry
  • Large (40L) backpack with good suspension - great for all sorts of travel
pingveno,

Legumes are kind of like that in the Instant Pot in terms of ease, but much faster. They’re usually done in under an hour. IP also has a Saute mode that allows you to develop the flavor and texture of ingredients like aromatics, spices, herbs, and tough vegetables. I don’t work much with meat, but I’ve made al pastor that was absolutely amazing.

pingveno,

Longevity is nice, but not as helpful if it can’t keep up physically with new releases.

You also have to imagine what that longevity is going to really mean. Even a sturdy phone with a good case is in an unfriendly environment. They live in pockets, purses, and get dropped. Getting updates for 10 years is great, but it’s not too useful if the phone is dead. It’s always good to pursue increased longevity, but there is diminishing return for many reasons.

pingveno,

Yeah, I think you nailed it there. Even a repair-oriented phone like the Fairphone has it’s limits, especially when it gets on to later years.

Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year (9to5mac.com)

In a surprising move, Apple has announced today that it will adopt the RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging standard. The feature will launch via a software update “later next year” and bring a wide range of iMessage-style features to messaging between iPhone and Android users....

pingveno,

Holy crap. Now my uncle can stop complaining about degraded quality when Android users are in message rooms. When it comes to tech, he really doesn’t care about the culprit. He just complains that people aren’t playing in Apple’s walled garden.

pingveno,

I’m not sure that’s quite the case. It sounds like it’s just a big undertaking where Google and Samsung are the only ones that have done it. There was never anything stopping Apple.

pingveno,

Gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up.

pingveno,

The biggest issue I’ve heard of is that message size is very constrained, so photos and videos are reduced to postage stamps.

pingveno,

Especially a candidate with left wing politics. There’s a reason Democrats run center-left candidates for president once it gets to the general. Those are the ones that win.

pingveno,

Yup, polls can’t account for something like an “October surprise”. In Hillary’s case in 2016, that was the James Comey letter that was leaked by Republicans Congress. It had the desired effect, with her poll numbers dropping virtually overnight. He rescinded the letter, but not fast enough to make a difference. This was all prompted by FBI agents in the NYC office who were leaking like a sieve to the press. So if you ever hear someone grouse about prosecutors supposedly interfering with elections because they are prosecuting Trump for his crimes, remind them that Trump got a whole presidential term out of FBI agents interfering for him.
