pHr34kY,

It’s easy.

I need to record over some Hi8 tapes; 5 tapes, ~2½ hours each. I can record audio and video directly. What should I put on there? (kbin.social)

I'm getting rid of an old Hi8 camcorder and figured I'd throw in the tapes with it, but I want to wipe the contents of the tapes before I do. I don't have a huge magnet or anything I can use to quickly erase the tapes, so the only option is to record over them using the camcorder. Instead of being boring and just muting it and...

pHr34kY,

What’s the point of that?

pHr34kY,

I can’t do that in Australia, but I can buy a toy encased in a chocolate egg.

pHr34kY,

Absolutely.

Changing the oil in your car only requires a spanner, pan, and household stuff like cloth rags. You can do it in your driveway faster than you can drive it round-trip to the dealership. I’ve saved heaps over the years.

House painting is a good skill. I knocked over $20k off my house build price by picking up a paintbrush. It was about 2 weeks of work and maybe $1k in supplies.

Learn computer maintenance. Like, how to format it and start over. How to diagnose and fix small issues. So many people buy new computers just because their old one is clogged with cruft. I fixed computers that others threw out, and avoided upgrade costs for decades.

Most importantly - learn to cook. Home cooking is so much cheaper.

pHr34kY,

When I was new to it, I would just do the oil, then get the shop to do the other stuff. Fluids and filters are the low-hanging fruit. They charge a huge amount for something that requires little skill or equipment.

Once the dealer quoted me $300 to change the radiator fluid. I didn’t even own a garden hose at that point, but I bought one, figured out how to flush coolant, and saved about $250.

Later on I started doing brake pads, gearbox oil, suspension bushes and little tidbits. The only “service” I paid for in the last 3 years is a head gasket replacement. Hopefully I get another 20 years out of it.

pHr34kY,

I had a similar experience. A raven got zapped by a 22kV transformer outside my house. It caused a noise and a brief brownout so I went out to the street to see. The raven was half burnt and gasping for breath. It had a minute or two to live, tops.

Went to the shed and grabbed a shovel to euthenaise it. I thought I could dig into its neck and decapitate it instantly. Nope. Didn’t work. I ended up slapping it with a shovel while my neighbors watched.

They probably think I’m nuts.

pHr34kY,

You get off the line to get across the intersection so that everyone queued behind you can get across before the light turns red again.

I’m amazed that so many people fail to realise that there is a solid time penalty for dawdling off the line.

pHr34kY, (edited )

Dude, a “1.44MB” floppy disk was 1.38MiB once formatted (1,474,560 B raw). It’s been going on for eternity.

It’s inconsistent across time though. 700MB on a CD-R was MiB, but a 4.7GB DVD was not.

RAM has always, without exception, been reported in 1024 B per KB. Inversely, network bandwidth has been 1000 B per KB for every application since the dialup days (and prior).

pHr34kY,

I have an F105 because the backlight is really nice in darkness compared to the F91W. For special occasions, I just got an A168, which is basically the F105 in gold.

I can wear the F105 while playing baseball. It won’t break, and it’s a cheap fix if it ever does.

Changing the batteries every 7 years is annoying enough. I couldn’t imagine one that has to be charged daily.

pHr34kY,

Any product name which starts with “smart” or ends with “maker”.

Both are just e-waste OOTB.

pHr34kY,

The Huntsman - Australia’s friendliest spider.

pHr34kY,

Virtual Virtual Skeeball simulator.

pHr34kY,

My wife does this, but there was a time that I was sidetalkin’ on a Nokia N-Gage so we’re square.

pHr34kY,

Go to hardware store

Buy LED replacement bulb

You can get one in “cool white”

Checkmate retards.

pHr34kY,

Have you seen recent benchmarks? Windows games actually run faster on Linux at this point.

The only exception is the small handful of titles with anti-cheat set to to anti-linux.

pHr34kY,

I have sideloaded apps where the malicious code has been removed (e.g. a Spotify client without ads). I bet this is an attempt to block them.

pHr34kY,

Haven’t seen an anti-adblock message yet, and I block ads in all sorts of ways across my devices.

pHr34kY,

I’ve left my bike like this for 50 seconds total in the 25 years I’ve had it - and I had to chase it down to get it back.

pHr34kY,

I threw a 1TB aftermarket SSD in my XBox One S and there was absolutely no attempt to stop me.

The loading speed in Fortnite tripled.

pHr34kY,

This would probably sell in Australia, where the two most popular cars are the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.

They account for about 25% of the cars on the road and they get nothing but contempt when I’m driving around them.

pHr34kY,

I found that a straight-through muffler made for a 99% reduction of pedestrians stepping into the road without looking.

pHr34kY,

Better ban radios too then.

pHr34kY,
pHr34kY,

I’ve done this as a project to go from 3G to LTE for a network of a few hundred devices.

3G and LTE (4G) used almost identical AT commands. The motherboards were build so the modems were swappable. It wasn’t too bad. I’m told the field techs had to drive 5 hours across the Australian outback to access some of them.

pHr34kY,

Oh, I have. The meter stopped transmitting and they just started making stuff up. They did it for months and refused to admit the meter was broken.

pHr34kY,

One of those places was Mt. Isa. It was equipment for mining.

pHr34kY,

A 1TB SD card costs the same as a single vinyl LP right now.

It’s not even a concern.

However, I have a box of CDs that I ripped to 96kbps Vorbis in the early 2000s, and I think this time I’ll go straight to FLAC. Plex will transcode to the flavour-of-the-month codec on the fly when listening with limited bandwidth.

pHr34kY,

Schrodinger has a question about that cat…

pHr34kY,

x/x = 1

0/x = 0

x/0 = ±infinity

When x=0, it is all three of these rules.

pHr34kY,

I’ve found it quite difficult to find PCM/lossless audio lately. You can go from CD to MP3, but not the other way.

pHr34kY,

Australia has a Superannuation Guarantee. It’s currently at 11% and will go to 12%. Employers get fined if they don’t pay it to their workers.

ato.gov.au/…/key-superannuation-rates-and-thresho…

pHr34kY,

Conservatives here are the worst at picking and choosing. They’ll happily borrow America’s racism, anti-socialism, hypercapitalism, nationalism, mysoginy, gun culture and mass surveillance… but holy crap do they make noise when you put a pumpkin on your front lawn in October.

Does the American accent or British accent sound better?

I grew up with a thick Australian accent with a drawl I dislike, and have been consciously trying to change it for a while. The problem is I tried to make it sound more American at first but keep getting drawn to speaking “Britishly”. Now it’s a Frankenstein of all 3 accents and I don’t know what to go with....

pHr34kY,

I’m an Aussie, and I reckon you can’t beat the articulated British accent. It’s just… proper.

I consider the King’s English to be the gold reference.

pHr34kY,

As a general rule, if I want it, I seek a good deal. If I am approached, it’s bad deal for me so I avoid.

pHr34kY,

I would also argue that a Suzuki Jimny / Samurai is plenty to get across a muddy track.

pHr34kY,

Yeah. We gotta tax the shit out of them. By the kilo.

pHr34kY,

I got that. It turned out to be ADHD and it required stronger stimulants.

pHr34kY,

I’m a software dev.

Looking at this thread, Lemmy’s userbase would halve.

pHr34kY,

As much as I hate Apple (and like beef and leather), I suspect a bit of work went into making it financially viable. Maybe they’ve worked their synthetic material to be as good and cost effective.

But yeah, there’s the chance it’s all marketing and they’ve merely replaced the word “vinyl” with “vegan” and called it a day.

Maybe they want to move manufacture to India where the cow is sacred. Who knows.

pHr34kY,

If you have steam, btrfs compression will dramatically shrink the size of an installed game with zero performance impact. In some cases, the disk read speed even increases.

pHr34kY,

Then it would be WD-41.

“WD” is “Water Dispersant” and the “40” is the sequential number of the fornumation attempt.

Changed ISP and server now unreachable

Hey guys, Changed ISP to Aussie Broadband yesterday, and suddenly can’t seem to connect to my server using my domain (still can connect in the local network). Aussie Broadband uses CGNAT, and I opted out of that, but I still can’t seem to use the server… am I missing some router settings I might need to change? Any other...

pHr34kY,

I’m on ABB and everything was fine after I called up and got CGNAT disabled and the ports unblocked.

You can unblock ports in the MyAussie phone app these days.

And you most definitely got a new IP address. Make sure you’ve updated your DNS. My IP hasn’t changed in over a year. It only ever changed when they upgraded their equipment.

Simulant meds for inattentive ADHD?

I’m a 45-year-old dude who’s only now coming to grips with having probably lived my whole life with undiagnosed inattentive-type ADHD. My wife and online communities like this one (and formerly Reddit) have helped me see that I may have been playing life on hard mode by pretending I didn’t have ADHD....

pHr34kY,

39, got diagnosed a year ago and also put on vyvanse. That’s pretty much the experience I got. However I did realise how much the constant feeling of starvation distracted me from my job (programming).

One correlation I am seeing is that fatigue makes everything worse. Melatonin before bed (and not being forced out of bed early in the morning) makes almost as much difference as the stimulants.

pHr34kY,

Larger garages are more environmentally friendly. My garage is huge compared to my house. It has 2 cars, a laundry, and all of the stuff I don’t use every day.

This is an area that is not heated or cooled. By having all the storage in the garage, I can get by with less living space.

Garages are cheaper per square metre than rooms, so you save money there too.

You get all the stuff into the same size house, but with less building materials, less heating and cooling costs, and less clutter in your house.

pHr34kY,

My car is 20 years old and has zero rust. The environmental footprint of manufacturing a car is huge. They last much longer in a garage. It also doesn’t need to get washed as often. Washing has an environmental overhead too.

pHr34kY,

You just need an older car with a DIN profile radio. You can swap it out for whatever you want.

I should chuck in a box with homebrew firmware for the lulz.

pHr34kY,

I would bet that the majority of these would have a SIM card that you could just remove.

pHr34kY,

When I got officially tested, it was deliberately long and enduring. The reason is that the symptoms surface once you lose the energy to mask them. On a focus/attention test, the results look very different 40 minutes in.
