US sues Amazon.com for breaking antitrust law and harming consumers (www.reuters.com)

WASHINGTON, Sept 26 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Trade Commission filed a long-awaited antitrust lawsuit against Amazon.com (AMZN.O) on Tuesday, charging the online retailer with harming consumers through higher prices in the latest U.S. government legal action aimed at breaking Big Tech’s dominance of the internet....

ohlaph,

They hand it over to them because of how Amazon operates.

Let’s say you’re a small shop and you ship out oven mitts. Paying for storage of your oven mitts can get expensive. So instead of paying for storage, you can actually have Amazon store them in their warehouse and allow people to buy directly from there. You don’t have to pay Amazon extra for storage, just their standard fees.

It does make sense if you have a business model that doesn’t support storing your products.

I don’t like it, but it makes sense for businesses.

ohlaph,

Get mad? Nah. Life needs these little curve balls.

ohlaph,

Besides pumpkin shit, I tey to avoid buying anything holiday related. It’s such a waste.

ohlaph,

Yes, yes, and so the thirst continues…

ohlaph,

Don’t worry, us millennials ruined toast apparently.

The Man Amazon Erased (www.tabletmag.com)

Jackson soon discovered that Amazon suspended his account because a Black delivery driver who’d come to his house the previous day had reported hearing racist remarks from his video doorbell. In a brief email sent to Jackson at 3 a.m., the company explained how it unilaterally placed all of his linked devices and services on...

ohlaph,

Use your wallet. Don’t buy products like that.

ohlaph,

Drop your mileage and intensity until you recover.

Do 25-40 percent.

ohlaph,

I typically don’t read anything from the new york times, unless I find a free paper somewhere.

Oklahoma judge opened fire while driving and intentionally crashed his car, police say (www.nbcnews.com)

An Oklahoma judge was arrested in Austin, Texas, last week after authorities say he opened fire on parked vehicles while out driving, striking at least one of them, and intentionally crashed into a woman’s vehicle, telling officers later that she had cut him off....

ohlaph,

Huh, so he’s a pervert too.

I hate how everything requires you to download a shitty proprietary data harvesting app nowadays when everything can be done just fine without an app.

I have recently started university and am required to use an app that has three Facebook trackers, one of them being a Facebook location tracker according to Exodus App Privacy, for the dining plan, when it would literally work perfectly fine using your student ID and ordering to a real cashier, LIKE HOW IT HAS BEEN DONE FOR...

ohlaph,

That’s terrible. So much data harvesting out there. It’s crazy. Cities and companies hire out to contractors that also do shady shit to the code to also harvest that data. It’s wild.

ohlaph,

I installed something similar at my house, just a keypad, not app connected. It’s awesome. But a key will still unlock it. They are wonderful if it’s not connected to the Internet.

Seriously, though. How often do you think of the Roman Empire?

I know this is a joke/meme, but I sincerely think of the Roman Empire a surprising amount of times. I find myself obsessing over how Roman citizens were living just as complex lives as we are today, or about Marcus Aurelius’ life and philosophy, or about how the Republic fell and became a totalitarian state.

ohlaph,

There are actually only 12 people in the world who know how to code. The rest of us copy some variation of their code or their derived code.

ohlaph,

Birds don’t live in nests.

ohlaph,

Wait, at which point?

ohlaph,

The armpit of the United States.

ohlaph,

It’s also an armpit, but Alabama takes the cake.

What are some FOSS programs that you think are a far better user experience than their counterparts? (sh.itjust.works)

I used Plex for my home media for almost a year, then it stopped playing nice for reasons I gave up on diagnosing. While looking at alternatives, I found Jellyfin which is much more responsive, IMO, and the UI is much nicer as well....

ohlaph,

Can you point me to the repository? I’m an android developer and looking to give back. Maybe I can fix a bug or two.

ohlaph,

Second krita vote. It’s pretty good.

ohlaph,

Not hard at all since you linked it. Hehe.

Seriously though, thank you.

ohlaph,

This is the way. I wish software engineers would do the same.

ohlaph,

96… let that sink in. Way too old to making any legal decisions.

ohlaph,

We really do. The millennials need to step up. I’m finishing my degree and am considering a post bachelorette in political science or something similar to get into politics. It’s frustrating to see such an aged population making decisions they won’t have to live with.

ohlaph,

Damn autocorrect… yea. I’m going to leave it because I deserve that.

ohlaph,

I think just “Twitter ranked dead last” sums up anything Twitter related.

How often do you get new running shoes?

I saw various articles saying you should get new shoes every 300-500ish miles, but I’m skeptical if they just want you to spend more money by saying that. Do you follow this advice, or do you put more miles on your shoes than this? Do you think 1000 miles on a pair of shoes would be too much?...

ohlaph,

350-400 miles. If I’m just running 1-2 daily over a year, I’ll lean more towards 400. If I’m running longer runs, like 4-8, then I’ll usually aim for 300 miles.

I don’t just toss my shoes out though, they become chore shoes, beach shoes, hiking, etc. They just aren’t used for running any more.

ohlaph,

Useless. I’d rather park myself. Saves a few dollars in tips and saves time.

ohlaph,

Haha. That’s basically my current role. I was asked to help in an area while they find someone to fill the role. It has been ages, like months. And no fill. Just found out at a minimum, it’ll be next year. So… yeah. Even working really slow hasn’t triggered them to find someone. Fuckers.

ohlaph,

Believe me, I have done far less and they still won’t budge. It’s almost hilarious.

ohlaph,

It kind of is.

ohlaph,

It’s why I focus on work life balance over everything else. No point in giving away weekends and nights for an average review. Average is perfectly rine with me, but that’s also what I give now.

ohlaph,

It’s almost there already.

TIL In the Hot Coffee lawsuit against McDonalds, punitive damages were given due to McDonalds intentionally overheating coffee to save money on refills (www.poolelg.com)

During the trial it was revealed that McDonald’s knew that heating their coffee to this temperature would be dangerous, but they did it anyways because it would save them money. When you serve coffee that is too hot to drink, it will take much longer for a person to drink their coffee, which means that McDonald’s will not...

ohlaph,

When you dive into that case, you definitely side with the lady. She had some pretty serious burns, like way beyond what most of us would get if we spilled coffee that we made at the house.

If my memory serves me well, she originally only asked them to cover the medical expenses. So their greed ended up costing them far more.

ohlaph,

Probably a fainting goat.

ohlaph,

I remember that one!

ohlaph,

I can think of a few. Jenny, Kevin, non zero guy, and Iranian yogurt.

ohlaph,

That’s so gross.

ohlaph,

I think about it daily.

ohlaph,

I love it.

It replaces most of my Reddit time. I still find myself going to some subreddits that have activities wince several here that are more niche have zero activity.

The UI is nice, although seeing duplicate posts can be annoying. Pagination could use some improvement. When browsing by new, new items posted seem to push the list so you could see the same items over and over it enough new items are posted. Adding some kind of timestamp and better list filtering could improve the experience.

The people here tend to be nice. Conversations have been mostly pleasant.

Overall, I have enjoyed it.

ohlaph,

Growth and deep conversations is what I miss most about Reddit.

The posts where you have thousands of comments to read through where you could easily spend an hour or more just reading through comments of a single post… I really miss that aspect.

ohlaph,

Yeah, I agree. Hopefully it’ll get closer each day.
