lolcatnip,

You might also be interested in prosody.

lolcatnip,

People aren’t good for bad because of their ethnicity or religion. They’re good or bad because of the choices they make. A Republican is someone who has chosen to support the Republican party. That’s such an absolutely vile choice to make that I have no problem with condemning everyone who makes it.

lolcatnip,

About 11,000 last I heard.

lolcatnip,

They don’t have sleeping quarters. Being able to house the crew is the bare minimum I expect from something canned a ship.

lolcatnip,

Ooh, name calling! Based on a willful misinterpretation of what they said, too. A sure sign of a solid argument!

when will be your last time to vote for the "lesser of two evils"?

When will be your “this is the last fucking time I’m voting for the ‘lesser of two evils’, then I don’t care after that, let this country burn to the ground”? For me, this is basically it. This is last election I’m going for that " lesser of two evils" bullshit. After that I’m done. It’s just pointless. Let’s...

lolcatnip,

, the whole point of a democracy is that we vote honestly

LOL, who told you that?

lolcatnip,

I gain the license to say I acted like a person in this democracy,

In other words, you get to indulge your vanity.

lolcatnip,

Republicans took away Americans’ right to an abortion by voting for Trump. Is that nothing to you?

lolcatnip,

Any reasonable electoral system will consistently elect people who represent something close to the average will of all the voters. Sounds like the system is working correctly.

lolcatnip,

What kind of dictionary are you using??

lolcatnip,

If your sense of self only comes from voting, you have SERIOUS problems.

lolcatnip,

That doesn’t support your earlier claims. And the etymology of a word isn’t its definition.

lolcatnip,

In that case your problem is thinking that voting is about you and how it makes you feel. It’s not.

lolcatnip,

If you need the concept of a word having a definition explained to you, you need to be talking to sometime far more patient than me.

lolcatnip,

I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a statement.

lolcatnip,

Language does not work that way. What you’re saying is the linguistic equivalent of sovcit nonsense.

can I be a Free Software advocate but still use non-free software??

I’m asking this because one time, while browsing the GNU website, I noticed that some of the members’ emails had “gmail” on them!! And I asked myself how would that be possible?? And I think other members of the FSF had Gmail too. Why? Richard Stallman is against Gmail, so why would those memberse use it?? Would that...

lolcatnip,

Free Software isn’t a religion. Or at least it shouldn’t be.

lolcatnip,

They’re not supporting him because they’re worried about his finances. They’re supporting him because they have faith in his leadership. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t care. Lots of CEOs are just empty suits, but Altman clearly has been doing something his workers liked.

lolcatnip,

I feel very 🍄 about people using emojis.

lolcatnip,

I can think Elon Musk is a shitter, more racist version of Lex Luthor at the same time I think Israel is run by bloodthirsty monsters.

lolcatnip,

For all things brown and sticky?

Impossible

lolcatnip,

I guess I hate free speech, too, because I’m blocking you now. Die mad about it.

lolcatnip,

Fortunately I already have a laptop with a near-OLED display, otherwise I’d be tempted.

(“Near-OLED” means an ASUS Nebula HDR display BTW. It’s an LCD display but the brightness and color gamut are more like an AMOLED display. I have mixed feelings about ASUS in general but god damn do they make a pretty LCD panel.)

lolcatnip,

Kurzgesagt videos aren’t exactly short either. I’m normally pretty irritated when people link to videos like that, but come on, are you really saying you won’t consider criticism just because it’s in the same medium as the material being criticized?

lolcatnip,

I want to like them but I don’t find them trustworthy after watching their climate change optimism video and a takedown that explains how ridiculous it is.

lolcatnip,

It’s 911 for all emergency services in the US.

lolcatnip,

In that case it’s a well kept secret.

lolcatnip,

As far as I can recall, no further attacks were prevented. I disagree with calling it “pointless”, because it was the right decision given what was known at the time.

lolcatnip,

I’m allergic to aluminum-based antiperspirants, and I didn’t know there was another kind for a long time, so I’ve always just used deodorant. It has never been a problem for me.

lolcatnip,

I’ve never had any complaints, but go off.

lolcatnip,

Your use of > rather than ≥ correctly indicates that Affinity is not a Photoshop alternative at all (going by other comments about how it’s not even available on Linux).

lolcatnip,

Also don’t admit you use anything else made/owned by Microsoft. Or Google, Apple, Facebook, Twitter, or—God forbid—Reddit.

lolcatnip,

You are 100% wrong. The word “Jewish” has a dual meaning and you’re ignoring the more relevant one. Try consulting a dictionary sometime. Or talk to a Jew about what it means to be Jewish.

lolcatnip,

Right now, aside from the basics, there is no proper way to use Markdown in Lemmy because different clients interpret it differently.

lolcatnip,

I don’t get why some people are so offended by a piece of software having features they aren’t interested in using.

lolcatnip,

The connection between having a feature you don’t want and missing one you do want is entirely in your mind. If you’re going to complain, why not complain about what’s actually bothering you?

lolcatnip,

I had a mother in law who stayed with her abusive husband because he threatened to kill her and their children if she tried to leave. Seems pretty unethical to me.

A less extreme example would be one partner badgering or manipulating the other into being monogamous when they don’t want to be.

lolcatnip,

Fuckin’ honeydew, am I right?

lolcatnip,

The free version has most of the features of the paid version.

Would it make sense to have #CashAwarenessMonth

Maybe December? So we all take money out of banks, at least current month salary, and spend cash only. I think that is something that shouldn’t be hard to do and it would show if we, the people, have any power left to make positive changes for the future or we can just surrender and eat bugs....

lolcatnip,

Unhinged notions confirmed.

lolcatnip,

You mean you don’t want more Law & Order: UFP?

lolcatnip,

To be really pedantic, gravity moves at the speed of light in a vacuum. OTOH my understanding of the speed of light in a medium is that it’s the result of photons being absorbed and re-emitted, and the speed of any individual photon is always exactly c. Personally, I’d prefer the convention that “the speed of light” without qualifiers always means c, but that ship appears to have sailed long ago.

Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?

2020 was… truly unique. It was so hard to stay away from doom scrolling, and I (and many others) were pretty disillusioned by the sad fact that so much of our country legitimately supported the Orange Man. I didn’t get a wink of sleep the night of the election because I genuinely considered it to be a make or break decision...

lolcatnip,

The suffix “-phobe” indicates aversion, not fear or irrationality. It’s much older than the psychological concept of a phobia.
