lolcatnip,

Your government used to be quite good at providing healthcare.

lolcatnip,

It’s preaching to the choir but it’s not wrong.

lolcatnip,

Same as any other large organization, I suspect.

lolcatnip,

Anarchy (as a political philosophy) is about an absence of coercion.

Capitalism is about the supremacy of property rights over all other rights, backed up by the threat of violence against anyone who doesn’t play along.

How anyone can think those two concepts are compatible is beyond me.

lolcatnip,

Sounds like the NPR model of funding. Even if you can get everything else to work, you still have a couple of weeks every year when you can’t go anywhere without having to stop and listen to Nina Totenberg lecture you 20 minutes about how important it is for everyone to pitch in as much as they can afford.

lolcatnip,

I fail to see how debating the form of a transportation network is related to the necessity of funding one.

lolcatnip,

Anarchism claims to be different. But yeah, that’s a big part of why I see anarchism as a thought experiment and not a serious ideology.

lolcatnip,

LOL.

lolcatnip,

Easier said than done if you ever want to eat out. So I just tip and grumble about it.

lolcatnip,

Some of us can’t downvote.

It’s just alcohol spiked with acetaminophen.

I wonder how likely it is that aquatic alien animals would have a taste or scent we’d think of as fishy.

Why do many microwave ovens hum in an interval of a minor 7th?

Something that I’ve noticed across most of the microwave ovens that I’ve used is that when they hum while cooking food, I can pick out 2 distinct tones. One of them is pretty clearly 60 120 hz, the 2nd harmonic of the AC power frequency. The other is consistently a minor 7th above that (which would be somewhere around...

lolcatnip,

A few microwaves don’t do that because they’re able to continuously run the magnetron at less than full power by using an inverter instead of a transformer.

This may seem kind of stupid but I am kind of stupid, is there a list somewhere of phrases that are stupid or insensitive racially or gender biased?

I just got up from conversation with a couple of older black men, that I said “well I got to go back to work and start cracking the whip.” And it occurred to me then that it was probably a really insensitive stupid thing to say....

lolcatnip,

Ok but “Cracker Barrel” still refers to the customers, right?

lolcatnip,

If you get drunk and drive, you had the intention to do something you knew could result in someone being killed. The intent very much matters in determining responsibility, and it’s the reason you’d likely be charged with involuntary manslaughter, but not murder.

lolcatnip,

I’ve seen dedicated Christmas stores before, and you’re ignoring how every store becomes a Christmas store after Thanksgiving.

lolcatnip,

“Neoliberal” is much more specific than “capitalist”.

Spam calls and texts are driving me fing crazy anyone have suggestions?

After repeated data breaches that no company really seems to give a s— about my phone is blowing up with literally hundreds of spam calls and texts month. I get and make MAAAAYBE 2 or 3 important calls per month, 180-200 of the rest are literally all spam. Anyone have any suggestions, apps ect that they have found refuge with?...

lolcatnip,

This is the reason why I won’t consider anything but a Pixel. I’ve tried other phones a couple of times but ended up replacing them with Pixels for the spam blocking.

lolcatnip,

Or a debt collector. Fuck those people.

What opened your eyes to what's happening in Palestine?

We’re a group of activists in a Western country where most have been brought up with either “Israel = good, Hamas = bad” or “It’s a sad, but unsolvable conflict between two equal sides”. The media heavily skewed to the Israeli perspective, and our politicians want to condemn protests in support of Palestinians....

lolcatnip,

As an American, considering how much my government supports Israel, I feel like my country is a party to the conflict.

lolcatnip,

It seems pretty sus that there are so many patterns in Vulcan names that only appear when they’re written in the Latin alphabet.

lolcatnip,

Touché.

lolcatnip,

Nah, just X.

lolcatnip,

I think trying to draw a distinction between religious names and secular names is an exercise in futility. I have a New Testament name despite being an atheist with atheist parents. They just liked the way it sounded, and it’s one of the most common first names in the US. Is it a religious name? Not to me!

lolcatnip,

A lot of given names started as surnames.

lolcatnip,

Hmm, I did some pretty heavy drinking in my 30s but rarely had hangovers. I have no data for my 40s because I just haven’t had much desire to drink, or to drink that much when I do drink.

lolcatnip,

What do you even do with files on an iOS device?

lolcatnip,

To what end? Are there iOS apps that can open the files?

lolcatnip,

Yes, everyone knows metric is nicer. But it’s just not an issue at all in day to day life. How often do you need to know the weight of a certain volume of water or the edge length of a cube that exactly contains that much water? For temperatures, everyone memorizes 32 and 212 as a small child and never had to worry about looking it up.

Would I rather use metric? Sure. But when almost everything is labeled in US units, all the advantages of metric pale in comparison to the hassle of having to convert almost every single measurement I encounter.

lolcatnip,

It’s pronounced like yiff. I have spoken.

  1. If billionaires didn’t exist nobody could do that
  2. They wouldn’t anyway
lolcatnip,

Not me! Wikipedia lists 14 people with my first and just name just in the category of American politicians.

lolcatnip, (edited )

So we just have to replace all the cities? Sounds easy enough.

lolcatnip,

If you want to say something shouldn’t exist, you have to account for 100% of the people who rely on it.

lolcatnip,

Read more carefully. They didn’t say 25% of all emissions.

lolcatnip,

As usual with “where do you draw the line” questions, I suspect there’s a reasonable way to do it, but I don’t know what it is, and finding a good answer might take some work. It would be worth investigating if there was any possibility advertising would actually be reined in.

Why is everything in consumer / American life so fucking shitty now - and companies literally just say 'oh bc profit margins' and we're now expected to swallow that and sympathize?

like I went to taco bell and they didn’t even have napkins out. they had the other stuff just no napkins, I assume because some fucking ghoul noticed people liked taking them for their cars so now we just don’t get napkins! so they can save $100 per quarter rather than provide the barest minimum quality of life features.

lolcatnip,

That would probably be true if climate change wasn’t about to fuck everything up.

lolcatnip,

Who orders “dark” coffee and not “black” coffee?

lolcatnip,

Yes but it’s far cheaper to take a regular vacation.

lolcatnip,

Signs like that wouldn’t be necessary if we weren’t living in a hypercapitalist dystopia.

lolcatnip,

The Little Caesars One is still going on. I saw an ad for it last night.

lolcatnip,

Maybe the corporate executives are robots. That would explain a lot.
