lolcatnip,

Now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time.

lolcatnip,

Obstacle? No. Annoyance? Yes.

lolcatnip,

The sheer fucking hubris!

lolcatnip,

If by “came from” you mean “was hijacked by”.

lolcatnip,

Are you proud of yourself for arguing in bad faith?

lolcatnip,

A few hundred million here, a few hundred million there, and pretty soon you’re talking about real money.

lolcatnip,

Why have AI say all if it’s not beneficial to us?

Seems perfectly fine to me to engage in that same line of questioning regarding something kind slavery. Why have slaves at all? The obvious answer is we shouldn’t.

lolcatnip,

I have a couple of friends who swear by them. I’m not even remotely convinced, though.

lolcatnip,

Realistically speaking, any of the major changes that happen near the end of a star’s life will make their planets uninhabitable on a time scale that seems pretty long from a human perspective. Imagine the last 100 years of climate change, but it just keeps getting worse at the same pace for a million years. By the time a star swells into a giant or explodes in a supernova, there won’t be anyone around to notice.

lolcatnip,

Historians of the medieval era hate the term “dark ages”, even in relation to Europe. The whole notion that the Roman Empire went poof one day and then everything sucked for 1000 years is just cartoonishly wrong.

lolcatnip,

Richard, is that you?

lolcatnip,

I’ve literally never had that problem.

lolcatnip,

I don’t get this. How is this democratic?

Oh that’s simple. It’s not, nor is it supposed to be. Hope that clears things up.

lolcatnip,

Or, you know, accepting the loss. But fascists don’t consider that option.

lolcatnip,

I think the federal government should throw those officials in jail without the voters having to file a lawsuit. They’re flagrantly violating the literal most important rule in any democratic society.

lolcatnip,

Judaism is a religion but “Jewish” is an ethnicity that unfortunately happens to share a lot of the same terminology as the religion. A whole lot of Jews don’t practice Judaism.

lolcatnip,

A politician who surrounds himself with fascists is a fascist, even if he’s not a true believer. That’s why I don’t hesitate to call Trump fascist even though his motivations are clearly all about enriching himself and stroking his ego.

lolcatnip,

I’m of two minds about national service. On one hand, it seems like a powerful tool to build national unity. On the other hand, I see a lot of risk that people will be forced to serve in ways that offend their conscience.

My main reference point is the US during the Vietnam War. Lots of people were conscripted and sent to fight in a war they didn’t believe in. Being a conscientious objector was a thing, but the criteria were very narrow, such that (for example) I would not have qualified even though I consider it an immoral war. The main way people got out of serving was though the exemption for people getting university degrees, but that of course is a very unfair system that only benefits people who are privileged enough to attend a university.

lolcatnip,

Puddle-deep falsehoods deserve no better.

Pixel 8 and 8 pro users - How has the experience been so far?

Hi Pixel 8 and 8 pro users, how has your experience with the new line of phones been so far? I’m still rocking a pixel 6 pro, and don’t intend on upgrading this year; however, as a pixel nerd, I am curious about how the new phone is holding up? Has there been any noticeable improvements or compromises compared to your last...

lolcatnip,

Definitely not any better in my experience, although I do think there is some luck involved in how well it captures your fingerprint when you’re setting it up.

lolcatnip,

I’ve heard you can get better battery life by turning off 5G, but I haven’t tried it myself.

lolcatnip,

I saw celebration of Palestinian deaths in my own Facebook feed and I’m an American with no conservative associates.

lolcatnip,

“AI” is not a term for photo editing at all, much less a generic term for it. Using totally wrong words to refer to things doesn’t make you innovative, it makes you a crackpot or a liar.

This is seriously the dumbest take I’ve seen all week and I can’t believe how many people upvoted it.

lolcatnip,

I’m not into men so maybe my opinion doesn’t count here, going by visual appeal, I’d take Geralt over Pike any day. OTOH Pike is definitely who I’d want helping me out of a jam.

lolcatnip,

I live in Seattle. We implemented the 25mph rule and it does seem to actually be helping. This is after a lot of attempts at improving pedestrian safety failed to have any effect. It’s irritating because it seems like it takes forever to drive anywhere in this city, and there are definitely a lot of corners cut in infrastructure that could improve safety—including very simple things like adding more marked crosswalks and stop signs at uncontrolled intersections—so I consider it a mixed bag overall.

lolcatnip,

Left arrows are pretty common. Right arrows are extremely rare.

lolcatnip,

The title would’ve been a lot clearer if it mentioned Tor.

lolcatnip,

That’s a bullshit definition that came about because of politicians and cops misusing the word so much.

lolcatnip,

Definitions are not all created equal. It’s about time you learned that.

lolcatnip,

You are clearly a better person than all the Google-using riffraff.

lolcatnip,

The music subscription service is older than YouTube Premium. It started as Google Play Music, then YouTube Premium was rolled in, then they replaced Google Play Music with YouTube Music.

lolcatnip,

I’m pretty sure advertisers aren’t paying for ads that get blocked.

lolcatnip,

Name and shame the airlines.

X runs ‘timeline takeover’ ad promoting anti-trans film (techcrunch.com)

Thursday on X (Twitter), all users saw the same pinned topic under the “What’s happening?” sidebar. As part of a “timeline takeover” — which gives advertisers “priority access to logged-in users’ first impression of the day” — conservative media nonprofit PragerU is promoting the hashtag “#DETRANS” to...

lolcatnip,

Only fascists refer to the existence of certain people as a “narrative”.

lolcatnip,

IMHO the bigger gotcha on the “states’ rights” lie is that the Confederate constitution gave states no more rights than the US constitution, while specifically denying one: the right to abolish slavery within their borders.

lolcatnip,

Well yeah, he’s a CEO of a major corporation.

lolcatnip,

I’ve had to manually type in passwords on a TV several times in the last few months because sometimes the login for even the biggest brand-name services is just broken.

lolcatnip,

Because they’re a major pain to type, except for the most common ones?

lolcatnip,

OTOH, there is only one character set that matters, and any system using a different one is, by that fact alone, broken.

lolcatnip,

There’s no such thing as a non-UTF8 character. You mean non-UTF8 bytes? If a system sees those, it should reject the entire input, not try to patch it up.

lolcatnip,

It’s not the 90s anymore.

lolcatnip,

That only works if someone already has access to a system’s password database.

lolcatnip,

That’s not what security by obscurity means. And going by your definition, all passwords are security by obscurity.

lolcatnip,

I said only one that matters. So I already did pick one. It’s called Unicode.

lolcatnip,

Those are encodings, not character sets.

lolcatnip,

Then you are a useful idiot for Republicans, assuming you’re not just a troll.

lolcatnip,

Apologists for capitalism promise everything.
