Starglasses,

I recently upgraded my RAM because it was wild how much was being used. I have to eat the cost of more RAM because sites don’t seem to minimize it at all.

Starglasses,

It’s solitary confinement. Even with multiple in a tank, it’s just solitary-confinement-sized conditions but with bonus miserable buddies with you.

If a whale can propel itself across the tank in a few seconds, then that’s the maximum time they could ever “feel the breeze in their hair” for their life. (Swimming in circles makes that longer, but circles over and over and over messes animals up. Pony rides are an example.)

Starglasses,

Most movies that people dump on are really good.

Starglasses,

In a genuine “wow look at the details and thought put in this. It’s great!”

And most movies. There are also terrible ones.

Found one: Master of Disguise 3.3 stars. Great movie

Starglasses,

Totoro is a “slice of life” film. No real plot because life doesn’t always have adventures.

Think of it like how people watch streamers (like the ones that are about their life). You get to experience someone else’s life for a bit.

Starglasses,

Being prepared like your library card is one, definitely. Always be polite. Always. If they’re grumpy, it’s something that happened in their life. Could be their boss is crappy, someone flipped them off, etc. It’s not about you, so injecting kindness would really help make their day better.

Be prepared and kind. Again. It really is the best way to make things go smoothly.

Those two, prepared and kindness/politeness, are really it if you think about it.

Starglasses,

It’s unintentional the first times. Speak up and help them know better. If they keep doing it, ask again. If they keep doing it…

I’d be upset if my partners family was racist and insulting to people not like them. I’d be pretty frustrated that my partner lets it slide.

Starglasses,

despite me explaining it over and over again.

I keep telling myself it’s useless, they refuse to understand.

… then I keep trying … T_T … in vain (15+ years of trying)… but then I try again. I just want to feel understood. I long for the family connection they’ve told me is so important my whole life .

I have bent my words over backwards and reworded them in every way possible. I’ve used articles, videos, and infographics. I have made dozens of analogies and comparisons to their own lives. I have handed them literal scripts of things they could say. I’ve ve tried everything I’ve heard of so far to try and get my family to understand me. It very much feels like I am solidly in a box to them because I see them be understanding to others, to their own family, but never receive the same compassion.

I resonate with this quote:

“Once everyone sees you as a villain, that’s what you are. They only see you one way, no matter how hard you try.”- Nimona

Starglasses,

Yeah, same. I’ve accepted I just don’t have a family 😪

Now it’s all me… mostly. I’m working on it 😌

Starglasses,

Kind of a po-ta-to po-tah-oh thing. No worries!

Why are you pointing out a mistake so accusatory?

“You made a mistake, this is how it’s spelled!” “Thanks!” "Two 'k’s in 'Hanukkah, Guardian. “Geez man, why make me feel bad? Now my day is worse.”

Starglasses,

It’s up to you to make the next big thing. Or someone else. It really doesn’t matter. People are just tickled by beans right now.

Starglasses,

Absolutely. This has been my favorite end-of-the-world film since I saw it the first time.

(You can find it on Youtube!)

Starglasses,

I liked this one. I’ve only seen it the one time, but it was obviously excellent because it still evokes memories that I liked it.

Starglasses,

The Razr flip phone was my first phone. It was such a cool phone to have. Now its back, and with a lot more!

Starglasses,

Just because we call it plant-based milk on Earth doesn’t mean that’s what they call it there. They call it ice cream and it could be made from plants.

And there is 100% reason to invent plant milk if you don’t drink animal milk. It’s a drink. We like it so we invent it.

Starglasses,

That would be all apps then. Apps are legitimately great. Websites do the same scummy things.

Starglasses,

What does that mean? I don’t understand. Apps have full access to what that websites don’t?

Starglasses,

Someone to help me de-clutter and get rid of stuff, to help me list and sell the valuable stuff, to organize my home in a logical way.

Stuff and tasks accumulate and have become overwhelming.

Starglasses,

Two come to mind:

If you can’t pay the property taxes every year.

If you don’t pay HOA fees or follow their rules (they have way too much power)

what's your best "insecure boss" story? (lemmy.world)

The image is formatted in a tweet with image format. The caption says “handle with care” over two pictures. The first picture is of an Amazon package with “fragile” written in sharpie. The second picture is on the inside the box with a paper and the text “a middle manager’s ego” on it.

Starglasses, (edited )

This is my parents.

Showing them they defend every single critique… is a critique. I’ve emphasized in so many ways how what they did wasn’t a big deal, how I’m not mad, how it’s ok and it’s a nothing-burger. I’ve given them literal scripts of what they could say. I’ve sent articles, videos, infographics that could help them understand and ways to be able to accept that what they did was a mistake an that it won’t make them a pariah. Telling them dozens of examples of times when I or anyone else has made a mistake and then apologized and fixed it when it was pointed out and everything was fine… nothing.

They don’t change. Like you said, the critique is the problem, it’s not the problem that’s the problem to them.

Just own it, make it right, and let some time heal any embarrassment that’s felt.

Just had to vent.

Starglasses,

“It’s not religious, I just don’t like showing my hair.”

Starglasses,

I wear a headscarf in the winter. Looks just like a hijab. I’m not wearing it for religion.

It’s fine to not want to show your hair. Some people don’t want to show their belly, shoulders, cleavage, legs. Nothing wrong not wanting to show your hair.

Starglasses,

I see this problem everywhere. “We should fix X” “But what about?”

Can people please just talk about the topic instead of finding arguments against it? Too many people just want to argue and be ‘right’.

Starglasses,

Yep! I once tugged the hose too hard and broke the pipe it was attached to and WAM! Water gushing up like a fountain. But luckily I knew where the ‘key’ (what’s the T thing called?) and got to the shut off valve in less than a minute.

Imagine not knowing where it is and feeling so helpless as you watch that water drain your bank :(

Starglasses,

I have the coolest clothes. Where’d I get them? I made them, patched them up, altered them, etc. It’s so nice :) You can even patch up things like shoes, luggage, furniture, pet toys, and so much more. Honestly, the world would be just fine if every company stopped making anything at all. There is more than enough products out there to satisfy the world.

Too your last point, yes!! I do not care what people think about me and it helps so much.

Starglasses,

This is such a useful and critical skill for anything with a keyboard. Being able to type without looking is great.

As a teacher, it pains me to see so many middle school students chicken typing. I don’t know if they teach typing in elementary like I had.

Starglasses,

Improvisation and problem solving.

Don’t have the thing you need? Can anything else work in the moment? It can be as simple as “All my bowls are dirty but I need one NOW. Use the big measuring cup. Or a pan, or a pot, or…”

You’re presenting with a collegue and they mess up their lines, what can you do in the moment to get things back on track? Your original line you were about to say would make no sense now. Think! Yay!

Being able to solve problems with what resources you do have is so fulfilling.

Starglasses, (edited )

Why is it so massive??? Can I limit the size??

Idk I just deleted the gif. It was superfluous anyways:)

Starglasses,

I should probably know if they have a class, but based on the average skill-level in 6-8th grade, it’s not effective.

And yes!! The bad habits part will be a pain in the butt for stubborn teens.

Starglasses,

That’s funny and cool! Do you know if it’s using roughly the same amount of electricity as a space heater would? Idk if that’s possible to know.

Starglasses,

I wonder if one could create a computer that generates the heat while doing that cool computing stuff, but also have it regulate the temperature so that it slows down when it hits, say, 65 degrees in the room. I’m intrigued very much by this idea.

Starglasses,

“The winter discovery boost”! I can imagine that. It would be so cool if humans cooperated together for these cool projects. Maybe if society was more like a beehive; meaning the way that everybee does some part to help out the whole hive instead of the widespread me-first individualism that neglects the problems they don’t have.

Starglasses,

Isn’t anyone who has hordes of wealth lucky? How can that not be luck? No one earns that much. It’s luck that he happened to be born to that life.

Starglasses,

I would do so much to improve the world if I had even one billion dollars. Rocket ships don’t help the homeless. Mars won’t solve the lack of money in education. A car flying through the void of space does not create public transportation. A mega yacht doesn’t feed the hungry.

Please let me handle your money, billionaires. You’ll look so good at the end of it.

Starglasses,

You’re right. I don’t mean discredit all space-related activities. Satellites help make our world function, and rockets are needed for that.

I meant to emphasize the desire to go to Mars. I see no net-benefit for the world. It’s a vanity project.

Starglasses,

Fly. Omg fly. I have always wanted to be able to fly. I went hanggliding once and it was magical. I want that again <3

Starglasses,

The result of destroying great green walls is a large part of why we are here.

Restore what was destroyed. It’s only a ‘bad idea’ for $$.

Starglasses,

I came here to understand and also understand less now haha

Starglasses,

Oh, so it’s a joke I didn’t know. Carry on! I’ve got my own jokes you guys would stare blankly at 🙃😸

Starglasses,

Thanks for helping us understand. Appreciate it.

Starglasses,

Even better. More things I love.

Starglasses,

Absolutely very helpful! Gives a funny way to point out speech stuff :D

Thanks for the link!

Starglasses,

A good example for time-to-time instances*. It means what I mean, but cadence works better for my original question

Thanks for the input. Never knew stuttering was also referred as cluttering. Neat.

*edit: though stuttering/cluttering isn’t always a time-to-time thing for some people. Thanks for understanding.

Starglasses,

Hey that one works too! Thanks :)

Starglasses,

You are agreeing? Tone on the internet is lost to me.

The post you replied to is saying that ads can’t “just not be looked at”.

Same with nudity. You can’t just not look at it. You didn’t even know it was there.

Starglasses, (edited )

Oh ok. I can see that perspective now. Thanks for explaining it to me.

Edit: and upon re-reading the comment several times, I can see that exactly.

Without tone the same sentence can go anywhere.
