Oh shit. He’s a Nazi? Fuuuuck. I thought he was just a plagiarizer.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

For ducks sake:

If it was “for another reindeer was conceived.” then the line would rhyme properly and fit into the song.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

I’ve got 3 Kobos in my house and we love them. I got one of my best friends to switch to Kobo after her final Nook died. If a Kindle doesn’t appeal to you, a Kobo might be exactly what you want. And they have a huge variety of models to choose from.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

If you’re trying to replace your Pure Beech Jersey I can recommend Sheets and Giggles as a suitable replacement. They aren’t jersey but they are just as soft. My husband loved Pure Beech and replacing them was a huge problem for us. Sheets and Giggles is around twice as expensive and made from bamboo modal instead of beech but they are the closest we’ve come so far.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

This is how I feel every time I see @The_Picard_Maneuver

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Oh shit, Stamets is here too? That shouldn’t surprise me but I hadn’t noticed him yet.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

<3 you too. Thanks for being awesome and giving us all things to enjoy. We appreciate you!

How do you work full-time and stay awake all shift?

A few questions to people who have struggled long-term with fatigue, exhaustion, insomnia, etc.: what do you do to keep awake for a full-time workday? Black coffee, supplements, herbs, drugs/prescriptions, other? None, and it required a lifecycle habit change? Have you had success with “desk” jobs sitting all day, or had to...

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Get checked out for sleep apnea! Being bored at work is normal but not being able to stay awake for an 8 hour shift means you are absolutely not getting proper rest when you are sleeping.

While you wait for your appointment, you can try resetting your sleep pattern by taking a solid 5mg dose of melatonin 60 minutes before bedtime for a week and ensuring you have 9-10 hours before you need to be up. I was in bed for 8 hours every night and got a rude surprise when I got a Fitbit for sleep tracking and found out I was only getting 6 hours of sleep in those 8 hours after you subtracted all the time it took me to fall asleep and any night-time wakings. Turns out I wake up 4-5 times a night and don’t remember it in the morning. Rolling bedtime back 90 minutes felt like a chore but it was worth it to feel good every day.

Working full days does suck so I tend to try to give myself 2-3 things to look forward to during my shift to split it into 3-4 time blocks. Sometimes they are little candies like Lifesavers or Jolly Ranchers, or 10 min bathroom break with phone game, reading something interesting in Lemmy, taking a walk down to say Hi to someone elsewhere in the building, any little activity that feels like something I want to do, that’s not strictly in my job description. Depending on your job you can even plan 6 of them and give yourself something for every hour that not first and last.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

This happens to my front step railing every year or so. It’s two things that have been mentioned, but in combination.

Carpenter bees bored into your wood to make their nests, and then a woodpecker came along and ate the bees in their nests.

Here’s a cool article about the bees. entomology.ca.uky.edu/ef611

Looking for an assortment of beans to figure out what someone likes best

I used to be mostly into teas, but my wife has always been into coffee. I work night shift so I figured it would be nice if I brewed her a cup in the mornings and save her the time getting ready. I’ve learned a lot about brewing coffee and found a brand that I like but she isn’t as into it and doesn’t really have a brand...

hedgehogging_the_bed,

We subscribed to Trade Coffee for about 8 months and they sent us a totally new bag from a different roaster every week. We played around with it a lot, many different kinds and roasts of coffee, and found one roaster in Atlanta we really like. You rate each coffee as you try them and they adjust what to send you next week. You can read descriptions of each coffee on their site and pick what order things come in.

It’s perfect for when you want to have a broad selection of coffee over time.

My only warning is Trade doesn’t really do dark, dark roasts. My taste pallette falls all the way at the end of their range and their rating scale is a little confusing so it took me a couple conversations with their customer service department to get my account set to only send dark roasts.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Source for that?

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Forgive me, but the articles suggested that the problem with tires was their deteriorating into miroplastic particles with use. What other miroplastic problem with tires is there that you’re not mentioning?

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Only one? I’m stuck between the US court system and Mormons looking for a wife but I guess Republican Congressmen’s Dating Pool is also a possibility.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

I’ve had IKEA Family for many years and honestly had NO IDEA it offered a discount on purchases. I’m not sure if they just didn’t advertise this very well at the start or it hasn’t been offered for very long.

We’ve been using it for free coffee, wifi in the store and savings on deliveries. 5% is not much of a discount but it’s adds up.

For those of you who don’t know, this wasn’t a paid membership. I think we entered our email at a store kiosk at they either gave or mailed us a orange card.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

No, fuck Active. It’s like 2 weeks of old content.

Top 6 hours or Top 12 hours if I’ve been asleep.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Depending on your instance I think you can set that at the account level. I was able to set my default home page and sort on Lemmy.world

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Not just lemmy.world. Alexandrite will do many different instances at its main site alexandrite.app

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Shit, now I’m thinking about it and you’d need something big like a flank steak or a brisket. I don’t think a pork-loin would work since it’s not broad enough. You’d still need to probably butterfly it, and then fringe the edge so you had strands to work into the braid. Best I can think of would be more like braided filled pastry than anything else. Not a terrible sway to do a stuffed roast or roulade I guess.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

I have ADHD and cannot keep track of one more paper anything. I record it as something boring akin to a bank transaction now that I fear the government snooping but an app with bright blaring notifications kept me sane and only pregnant when I wanted to be for a decade. I’m mad that I don’t feel safe using it any longer.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

That’s so cool you have your own kitchen!

hedgehogging_the_bed,

I think you misunderstood me. It’s great you have a place where you can leave stuff and it doesn’t get messed with. I don’t have that in my life so if I want something to be the way I left it, I need to keep it with me like on my phone. I’m glad that you can use a calendar for your purposes and you have a safe place for it but not everyone has that so quit shaming people for having different coping strategies than your own.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Because a paper calendar isn’t a viable option for everyone, which is how I started…

It’s not being inflexible to understand that a particular option isn’t going to work for you, or others. I’m thrilled a paper calendar works for -you- but for people like me it’s not a viable option and calling us inflexible isn’t helping.

Between Bad Dragon and RuPaul’s Drag Race on the top row is the State of Pennsylvania Department of Transportation aka PennDot.

Always free, not shitty. Been great for and simple for 5 years now.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

It is! I taught research at the grad and doctoral level and Zotero was the best by a long shot. SciWheel is a close second.

I hope the Devil comes for EndNote soon, it is awful and has been awful for a long time.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

John Oliver doesn’t seem to have a problem with HBO/Max

Colbert seems to struggle more with the FCC regulations on what he can’t say and show more than what CBS wants. It’s less often now but at the start of his Late Show he really appeared to be mean to CBS on-air specifically to prove that they didn’t have a presence in his writers room.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Stuart has 22 Emmys from the Daily Show and Colbert Report combined. John Oliver has 17; 3 from the Daily Show and 14 from Last Week Tonight.

I agree with others who said this is Apple’s problem, not Stewart’s. He can get a platform/desk anywhere he wants one.

price discrimination

So we took a family vacation recently and we had to drive halfway across America and what creeped me the fuck out was how we were getting such different prices on different phones while looking at the same hotel room on Priceline. For example I would look for a hotel in Chicago and find a room for a $180, then my cousin is also...

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Travel companies have been doing this shit for years. The most egregious is that Apple users tend to get shown higher prices overall but it’s been around in many forms for a long time. They call it “Dynamic Pricing”

hedgehogging_the_bed,

While being totally wrong because it wasn’t called Alfredo at the time and wouldn’t be until like 1930s, they did often put oil, herbs, and cheese on pasta before the popularity of the tomato so you are still correct.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

This was what I remember about the US restrooms before the auto-flush mechanisms came. 30-50% of the stalls in a ladies room would be unflushed and people would occasionally take their chances flushing it with their foot to get an unflushed one back in use if there was a line. Nice places had someone walk through the bathroom and flush everything, refill the paper towels and wipe down the sinks occasionally. Really nice places had people stationed in the bathroom full-time but they often expected $1-5 in tip for handing you a paper towel. Fuck, I’m only 40 but I’m old.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Dude was both sympathetic and what he wanted was kinda reasonable. He’ll probably get it too.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Hahahaha. “Go back to”?

Just because you don’t know what they are called today doesn’t mean those sites stopped existing. Shock and gore sites have been part of the Internet for a long time because they fill a human desire, same as porn and gambling and anything that makes your brain think you’re being naughty enough to hand out that sweet dopamine reward.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Teenagers, adrenaline junkies, other thrill seekers of all sorts. People jumping out of airplanes is a popular hobby worldwide and so is controlled falling down snow-covered mountains. People get happy doing weird stuff, what can I tell you?

hedgehogging_the_bed,

I’ve used OurGroceries for a long time and I also think it would do the job.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

I recommend colinwoodard.com/books/american-nations/It’s a well written source on this subject. Woodard details eleven groups each with a shared cultural background, with names like New Netherland, Tidewater, El Norte, and the Left Coast. The Wikipedia page for the book has a broad outline of the ideas if you want an overview; but, the book is well worth a read if this is an area of interest for you.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Huh? In the exact same place on this Pixel and my last three Pixels is the Power button, Double tapping the Power Button on my Android phone opens the camera. Press and hold to talk to Assistant. Hold a long time to open Emergency and eventually call 911 automatically. It’s been a option for a long time. It would be nice if Google made these use assignable actions but they already exist.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

You can turn it off now. I think it’s the Feature called Crisis Alert in Safety and Emergency

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Due to odd building geometry, the handicap stall in the ladies restrooms off the main lobby is bigger in sqft than my assigned workspace. I think of it as my “more private office.”

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Does anyone else remember reddit’s Knights of New? I’m just doing my part.

America’s Funniest People?

en.m.wikipedia.org/…/America's_Funniest_People

It was on right after America’s Funniest Home Videos in the early 1990s.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

His quotes on Native American rights and women’s rights suggest he might have had broader views than you are considering. He could have been a racist but he appears to have been fairly progressive by 19th century standards.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

My NP told me to avoid this stuff and just hand over my Photo ID at the back to get the real pseudoephedrine.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

The real pseudoephedrines are also little red pills, at least where I am on the US East Coast.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Nearly hucked my Vizio out last night as I discovered that between last football season and today they have hidden the broadcast channels I receive with my antenna, in their “Free+” offerings and no longer show the channel number when you rotate between them.

This also means that when you choose “Antenna” from the input menu, you get around 15 seconds of black screen while it loads an informative slide about the change and then demands you press the OK button to finish loading their program

Then, to change the channel you must open their fiddly “broadcast guide” and use it to choose the channel you want to watch (after 15 second loading delay for the guide and another 5 second delay once you’ve picked a channel.

To change the TV from the Nintendo game to Fox took me 10 minutes. Then I realized Fox was showing the Packers game and I needed CBS and it took me 5 more minutes to find the menu again and find CBS.

Just last February this exact same action took maybe 20 seconds? Turn TV on, change input to Antenna, flip channels manually.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

Ooo, there’s a name I haven’t heard in a bit. I had Plex sometime a decade ago. I had a Boxee 2 Beta test device around the same time or maybe later. They were followed by an early Roku which I have neglected to replace and got stuck relying on the Vizio software for the antenna.

hedgehogging_the_bed,

They are terrible! I bought one box of these bad boys and never looked back. They are going to last me a lifetime at this rate because they only need to be replaced when I loose them and the box of 50 takes up no room.

Stainless Steel Needle Threader a.co/d/c2lSo1N

hedgehogging_the_bed,

The difference is that guy was working at a major pharmaceutical research firm with animal advocates and whistle-blowers and accrediting board all over them. Musk’s group is new and is still in the fucking around phase. As soon as they have to answer to any outside org, suddenly this will be a huge liability.
