I was going through Pine64’s page again after I found the latest KDE announcement. With that said, I seem to see a lot of issues with firmware on the Pine, whilst the Librem is just plain out of budget for me. Was interested in how many people here run a Linux mobile as a daily driver, and how has your experience been?...
I’d love to run a system without Google but it’s hard. I tried to run LineageOS with microg for a week or two but eventually had to install Google Play Services. Lots of hurdles with push notifications and unfortunately some apps really refused to work when they detected no play services installed. It really sadden me, to be honest. Really wanted to make it work.
Never gave Linux phones a chance, I rely too much on apps that wouldn’t be available.
I think the apps would work without Google Play services but they refuse to boot without it. Unfortunately since these are banking and finance apps the only alternative is not to use them.
I own a Poco F2 Pro, ROM support is somewhat limited. CalyxOS is insupported, it seems. When this phones starts dying I’ll probably give GrapheneOS a shot!
My first attempt was to flash the stock LineageOS and then install the microg packages from the fdroid store. I didn’t manage to get that fully working, the microg self-check would have a lot of fails due to version mismatches. I never figured out why. A lot of applications complained about the lack of play services and warned me they wouldn’t work, microg was clearly not installed properly.
Then, I flashed the “LineageOS for MicroG” ROM, which is a LineageOS fork with microg already installed. I had to enable all microg services but the self-check was 100% successful out of the box. No warnings about the lack of play services, everything was mostly working. I installed all software from Fdroid when possible and Aurora Store when not possible.
Push notifications were a bit of a struggle at first but they did work. I still didn’t get notifications to work on Telegram, but “Telegram FOSS” fork seemed to work okay. For GPS/Maps I used Waze (which is technically owned by Google) and it worked flawlessly. I assume you can use other GPS application, I just didn’t do my research on this one. For email I am using Proton Mail, which worked as expected.
The problematic apps were banking/financial apps, which I guess most people can live without. I’m confident the apps would work with microg but simply refused to even start. In Portugal our interbank network developed an application called “MBWAY”, which is really ingrained in the portuguese population. Most people use it. It has a ton of cool functiontionality such as sending money to other people just by using the phone number (instantly and without fees), replacing your ATM/food cards for payments and generating virtual credit cards for online shopping.
I use MBWAY way too much (pun intended), and just decided I didn’t want to live without it. I ended up flashing stock LineageOS and their GAPPS package, which contains the play services and play store app. I still install most stuff from the Aurora and Fdroid store. The banking/financial apps are now working.
I have had a tendency since my earliest days on social media where I will get halfway or more through a response, and end up just cancelling it. Sometimes I feel like I’m just being to over the top with snark or otherwise don’t want to be that kind of person, but a lot of the time I’ll decide I just really don’t care...
All the time. Sometimes I’ll write an entire wall of text, correct all the typos I could find and then delete it. “Why bother? This person is just not going to consider a different opinion, just save yourself the pointless discussion.”
I’ve played 4 of the 12 games so far and I’ve been having a blast. I’m excited to play the next session, which is something I could never really say about ticket to ride....
You are not supposed to be an inanimate object. You’re supposed to listen, acknowledge, talk about the topic at hands. Empathize, ask questions to better understand the problem. Show interest in your significant other, show them you care about what is upsetting them.
Sometimes people get stuck on the “have you tried the most basic and simplest answer?” questions and it’s frustrating as hell. You can just ask “wanna brainstorm about it?”, at least you’re setting the mood in the right direction.
Because there’s already so much parking available, right?
When I’m driving my mobility impaired grandma to her eye surgery, I want a parking space. Driving in major cities is already enough frustration, no need to add more.
Fewer parking spots is not a solution on its own… It’s a natural consequence of good public transportation network. No one really enjoys to spend hours on traffic to go anywhere.
Not sure how it works in your country, maybe it’s different. Here you car needs to have a visible disability permit or you’ll get fined. Only the car owner can apply for the permit. I’m the car owner.
Everyone has different preferences but its THAT time of the year again and getting some inspiration could be useful :). I really like practical solutions like gaming mats or storage solutions but not sure where to get the best ones.
I think this is a really hard question to answer! Whenever someone who is not into the hobby tried to give me anything boardgame related… Well… It’s the thought that counts, I suppose!
I definitely think accessories are the way to go. I love inserts/organizers but sometimes it feels hard to justify their cost. I’d love to get them as a present!
Cool dice are also nice gifts, if you’re into that.
I believe in an open internet, FOSS, privacy by default, etc. I migrated away from Google by self-hosting Nextcloud. I prefer messaging apps like Molly, SimpleX, Threema, Matrix, etc. over standard SMS. I love the Fediverse (Lemmy, Mastodon, etc.)....
I’ve been on both sides of this table. Yes, I wish people would move away from WhatsApp but that’s not going to happen. They’re not going to even make an effort to begin to understand Signal just to talk to me. I could just not use WhatsApp and use Signal to talk to myself, that’d be fun.
I understand their frustration as well, people already have too many message apps already. WhatsApp, telegram, hangouts, SMS, Slack, Discord… When asked to install a new app they are naturally reluctant to install yet another messaging app just to talk to me and only me. I too have that one friend who bugs me every couple of months to install the new cool message app that is going around. Currently that SimpleX, wonder what comes next.
I’ve been struggling with a rather complex shell script, and it’s becoming apparent that Bash might not be the best choice for this particular task. While I usually gravitate towards statically typed languages like Go or Rust, I’ve noticed that many people recommend alternative languages such as Lua or Python for scripting...
I make bash scripts to automate the configuration of new servers. Stuff like install packages, create users, create groups, configure the database, manage permissions…
I feel like that sort of stuff would be a nightmare to do in high level languages but maybe I’m just too used to bash.
X11 development is dead so it really is just a matter of time before Wayland is the norm and you’ll be saying stuff like “back in my days we used X11 and we liked it!”
Yeah, I share the feeling. Not sure if the problem lies on Wayland or Nvidia but hopefully if Wayland becomes the standard they’ll address the elephant in the room!
You seem to forget that without third party apps we would not have had a mobile Reddit experience for a long long time. The official Reddit app, in fact, was once a third party app. The subscription is only necessary because Reddit decided to nuke all other apps by pricing them out of the game. You really shouldn’t side with Reddit on this one
I also find disgusting that people have to pay to use the Reddit app of their choice. It sucks. Rewarding Reddit for their outrageous stance is bad.
These folks, however, are willing to pay a subscription, receive ads and not have any NSFW communities. Imagine how bad the official app is that people would rather pay for less content. Imagine defending that these people shouldn’t be able to have alternatives that suit them better. Jeez.
This question was inspired by my hatred of Temporal Anti-Aliasing which, in many games nowadays, is poorly used as a performance bandaid. On lower resolutions it will smudge and blur the image and certain bad cases of TAA will cause visible ghosting....
Even the most basic actions, like walking, require time to learn. Linux has some very user friendly distributions like Ubuntu or Linux Mint where you can basically auto-learn really fast. You don’t have to start with Arch Linux nor should you.
Linux will never compete with Windows because most people will never bother to change whatever OS came with their laptop. That had nothing to do with the community.
While the article is just rubbish, as if vertical va horizontal is settled by sticking your games to the wall (how big do they think my house is, maybe if I life in a climbing gym). However for a few games it could be cool.
I use a keyboard with an american layout because I find it much much better for programming. However, since I’m portuguese, I want to use some characters that don’t exist in the american layout, such as á, é or ç. In windows I selected the US international layout with with dead keys and I could do everything....
I actually have grown to hate the Portuguese layout, or ISO in general. Why is the enter key so damn big? I currently own a Happy Hacking Keyboard 2 and can’t imagine living without it.
QGIS is a very nice piece of software, definitely worth checking out. Some of our geographers use Mapinfo (proprietary) but most use QGIS. Everyone hates ESRI.
Some of your classes might require some ESRI plugins… I would check with your teachers if it’s okay to use QGIS, they will certainly know the answer to that question.
