I mostly read things here. Sometimes I’ll write a thing. Outside of Lemmy, I read things. Sometimes I’ll write a thing. Like software documentation. Or maybe something else. Who knows what the day will bring.

Just to add the missing comment about Edge - MS is turning into the Microsoft version of Chrome. They removed Google’s ad bs and replaced it with their own ad and monetization bs.

This part offers some more interesting insight to his character. Yet another insecure c-suite lashing out at anyone who criticizes him.

The letter, jointly written by three members of the class of 2023 and published on the school newspaper’s website in May, was reported Friday by New York Magazine as part of a story on unrest within Goldman Sachs over Solomon’s management style.

Solomon oversaw record results for Goldman Sachs in 2021, and the stock is up more than 50% since he took over almost five years ago. But he’s faced elements of revolt from the firm’s powerful cadre of partners over issues tied to the business, such as the costly consumer-banking flop, and some specific to Solomon himself — complaining about his brusque management style and his use of the corporate jet for leisure.

A growing list of senior departures has also drawn attention, with some executives departing soon after taking new posts, and some top women exiting amid criticism about the firm’s culture. The tally includes executives Solomon has elevated, like Julian Salisbury, who left last month for Sixth Street Partners.

Except, if you refuse to breathe, you won’t die, you’ll just pass out and start breathing again…which kinda kills the tension implied by the meme.

All entertainment fills a need in your daily life. It only makes sense that the need changes as you grow older.

When I was younger, I was poor and had something to prove. Thus, I loved big games with hundreds of hours of gameplay, grinding for the best bobbles, and competitive multiplayer experiences.

But as I get older, I don’t care about any of that anymore. What I need instead is a way to relax within my short gaming windows, to have unique experiences, and maybe have a sense of control as my life gets more chaotic. As a result, I’ve tended more towards shorter indie titles. But also towards non-gaming things like travel, gardening, and crafting hobbies.

We spent so much of our lives building our identity around a single hobby - gaming. And maybe that was a mistake. So many of us end up sliding away from gaming as we get older and that change is okay and even expected, that shouldn’t give us an existential crisis.

Your identity should reflect the person you are, not the thing you do.

You’re better than this. Hatred of the straw man doesn’t suit you. And it sure won’t solve any of the issues in this country. All it does is grab your attention and distract you.

Also anti-vaxxer, Trump supporter, radical anti-medicalist, HIV/AIDS denialist, and notibly supported by Steve Bannon and conservative super-PACs as a “chaos candidate” against the dems. I listened to him back when he was on Air America decades ago. He has always been a wacked out nutjob.

I fit somewhere between normie and conservative. Philosophically, I agree with the tech conservative, but I also have shit to do and when FOSS gets in my way, it’s hard to justify it.

I use Firefox because it was an easy switch.

I used Signal until they killed sms support. Sorry, most of the people I know use a default messages app. And the day I force everyone I know to use Signal is the day they stop talking to me.

I dabble in Linux, but I main Windows because I’m not a programmer or IT admin. I know how to use it, for better or worse, and I don’t have to memorize terminal commands to perform even basic tasks. Sure, gaming is getting better on linux, but it’s still a compromised experience and I still, to this day, have to look up tutorials and terminal command every time I try to do anything on my Linux box.

But…wherever possible, I use FOSS software.

I like to call it the tech pragmatist. I agree with the conservative, but I’m not that smart and I got shit to do.

Fun fact, being in pronation for long periods of time can put pressure on forearm muscles and restrict blood flow, causing RSIs. It’s why a lot of ergo keyboards are tilted upwards towards the middle.

On the other hand (hah), pronation is super useful for throwing athletes - especially pitchers. Pronating during a pitch gives the ball a spin, which makes it fly faster. But it also reduces pressure on the shoulder by using the forearm muscles as a natural shock absorber.

The latter demonstrates one reason why we are “built like this”. It’s a very useful mechanism for survival, tool use, and agility. The former demonstrates one reason why our physiology is NOT “built for” for computer and office work.

Though as someone who works in modern IT I foresee the future of robotics and AGI allowing for the kind of economic automation that would make communism inevitable eventually as jobs are reduced over time in the course of the next hundred or two hundred years.

Yeah, I thought that too, but now that we’re getting some rudimentary functional AI and robotics, what we’re seeing is companies using it to save them money - basically automating work that would be done by highly paid specialists, contractors, or outside companies. And they are not investimg in it to automate low paid rote work because the human labor is cheap enough that a big automation investment only yields gains long term - and businesses are highly focused on short term gains. So, automation is really just limiting our opportunities for more satisfying work.

What’s more likely to happen in the short term is that the pressure to adopt new tools will fall on the worker. AI and robotics won’t take your job, but someone using them will.

Also remember that work and money is a form of social control. There will be significant pressure to ensure the populous is still working to earn something that the ruling class has more of. Nothing short of a looooonnnnnnng term political change or violent upheaval of power dynamics will change that.

My wife and I would say hi when you moved in. We’d exchange small talk and eventually the conversation would hit a lull and you’d excuse yourself to go - you know, move in. I’d bring over cookies to greet you to the neighborhood. You’d offer an awkward smile, eat one, and throw the rest away later.

We’d exchange head nods or waves whenever one of us drives by. Occasionally, exchanging a “hey, nice weather huh?” when one if us passes by on a walk with the dog or just around the neighborhood.

The most interaction we’d have is when a tree branch falls on the fence during a winter storm. I’d pick up a few repair quotes, and come over with an offer to share the cost. Depending on your personality and personal financial situation, you’d either agree to pay part or start arguing that i should pay it all because the tree was on my property - and eventually I’d give up and pay for a bad neighbor fence.

If the former, we’d continue to have a friendly - if distant neighborly relationship. If the latter, we’d probably never interact again.

“AMD CPU use among people who run Linux, only play custom maps on CS:GO, refuse to buy anything on pistol round, still haven’t learned how to use GIMP properly, and work as a low level IT slave, approaching 90%.”

I mean, we do realize a large percentage of “Linux Gamers” are running steam decks, right? And AMD has been the best choice for Linux users for a while. 70% in that context is kinda sad.

eochaid,
@eochaid@lemmy.world avatar

Intel runs just fine on Linux, but because AMD gives so much support and lip service to open source, and because Intel is the big bad market leader, there’s a lot of “intel bad, amd good” in the open source community.

My original comment was trying to point out that “Linux Gamers” are an incredibly niche category filled with die hard linux fans with strong opinions and steam deck users. And frankly I’m surprised Intel has ANY marketshare with that crowd.

Pointlessly gendered?

Everyone loves candles. Some guys are just pointlessly insecure about candles being a “girl thing”. I’ve also known girls that love the smell of gasoline. People be what they are regardless of their lower bits.

Someone’s insecure about his Shakira collection.

Seriously though, I’m guessing this guy either doesn’t like music at all (I’ve known a few and they act like this) or got made fun of a lot for his music tastes in high school. It’s a shame this guy is probably a walking insecurity.

Which is a great reason to unmatch him and move on.

eochaid,
@eochaid@lemmy.world avatar

Oh absolutely, no shade on Shakira at all. Just using her as an example of something a guy might be insecure about - which is of course, stupid. Don’t be insecure about liking music, folks.

Fossil and Mobvid’s TicWatches are normally my go to alternatives, but personally, I haven’t been impressed with their latest offerings. Google and Samsung really do have the best WearOS devices, if that’s what you’re looking for.

That said, I realized recently I wasn’t using most of the features in WearOS. I had a dozen apps and barely used any of them. All I really used it for was notifications, music controls, and as a basic step counter.

Picked up a PineTime and I’m pretty happy with it. It’s basic, but it’s cheap, repairable, and I can flash alternate firmware/oses on it easily with gadgetbridge.
