Cheap and good mini-PCs for gaming?

Hello, everybody! I want to have a little mini-PC for gaming that operates like a console. I don’t want to have a big, clunky case in the back or front of the TV. Furthermore, I don’t play many AAA titles from recent years, so the hardware doesn’t need to be high-end. It would be nice if I could run Scarlet Nexus, Nier:...

X wants permission to start collecting your biometric data and employment history (www.theverge.com)

“Based on your consent, we may collect and use your biometric information for safety, security, and identification purposes,” the privacy policy reads. It doesn’t include any details on what kind of biometric information this includes — or how X plans to collect it — but it typically involves fingerprints, iris...

Some time ago I was looking for a Linux music player (harmonoid.com)

Well, I have to say that Harmonoid is the best one I’ve found, it has a ton of cool features, it works and it allows you to be able to see your collection by album and it doesn’t use Electron. Right now its development has stalled a bit but it’s still pretty much in good shape, though.

const_void,

Have you tried Strawberry? It’s the best one out there, imo.

const_void,

I have and it’s great but I use KDE so I prefer a QT-based player

const_void,

Which theme? If you configure it right it should match the system theme. Here’s what mine looks like on Plasma 5, Breeze Dark.

const_void,

Coworkers have been complaining on Teams all day about how the Bing bar is suddenly showing up on their desktops. When did Microsoft stop giving a fuck about businesses? I wish to fucking god we could run Linux on our work machines.

const_void,

Does the money go back to the distros?

The Spotify Car Thing cost $100, but I can't use it anymore. (lemmy.ml)

EDIT: The only reason why I still had it at this point was because I could use it with other apps. However, now that my Spotify Subscription is cancelled, it doesn’t work with anything. It’s mildly infuriating because today, I can’t still use it with other apps like I was able to yesterday....

const_void,

Fits with the stupid, low effort, cave-man speak error message “Need Premium Account”

const_void,

What turns you on?

const_void,

Not lame at all. Pretty cool actually.

const_void,

That chat bot looks like she’s seen better days. Yikes.

const_void,

IP whitelisting

const_void,

Blacklist everything then whitelist the IPs you know you’ll be connecting from (work, cell phone, etc). I don’t connect from random places usually. If I need to then I use cellular. You might be better off with a VPN if you need to connect from random places.

const_void,

Is there any concern with whitelisting a cellular CGNAT’s public IP?

It depends on how much you decide to whitelist. In my case I whitelist my cellular carrier’s IP block. Which does expose those services a little more broadly but I’m willing to risk it.

const_void,

It’s the same or higher here in the US based on my personal experience.

const_void,

Least bloated Windows version

const_void,

Most of the RAM is being used by the “News & Weather” app and other bloatware.

const_void,

No idea why folks still use stuff like this when there are open source alternatives like 7zip and Nana Zip.

const_void,

Yeah! That’ll solve climate change and wealth inequality!

const_void,

Linux might break more often, but when it does I’ve ALWAYS been able to recover or restore it

Yep. On Windows the mantra is always “Just reinstall”.

const_void,

Hell yeah! This is my favorite Lemmy app!

const_void,

I think COVID did a lot of brain damage. People are acting crazier and more reckless in the last few years and I can’t think of any other reason for it.

const_void,

A middle aged, balding man wearing jeans and hiking shoes? I expected better.

Why do people still recommend Thinkpads for Linux when there are Linux-oriented manufacturers now?

I’ve noticed in the Linux community whenever someone asks for a recommendation on a laptop that runs Linux the answer is always “Get a Thinkpad” yet Lenovo doesn’t seem to be a big Linux contributor or ally. There’s also at least six Linux/FOSS-oriented computer manufacturers now:...

const_void,

Starting to get better slowly here in Portland. There’s still smoke high in the atmosphere though making everything look like shit.

const_void,

Through their OEM deals, you’ll have a hard time finding a new computer with anything other than 11

So true. Just a reminder that alternatives exist the next time someone tries to recommend a Thinkpad or Dell:

const_void,

How is Gentoo keeping it simple?

const_void,

I’m all for paying a little more for a machine that puts Linux and FOSS first. Dell and Lenovo are cheaper, sure, but you’re supporting the Windows/closed source ecosystem.

Alpine LXCs in Proxmox (lemmy.world)

I recently moved Nextcloud and Gitea from Containers on a Debian VM to Alpine LXCs running Alpine’s packages. I’ve never had Nextcloud’s web interface so snappy and my resource usage for both is next to 0. If you’re running Proxmox I’d highly recommend trying out Alpine LXCs if they package your services.

const_void,

Imagine having all the resources in the world and then spending all your time on something only 12 year olds think is impressive.

const_void,

My family sure is stingy with their money lately…
