I discovered StreetComplete recently and have been having fun “popping” quests around town, on vacation and around home. Now what? What happens with my contributions? How long before they’re wrapped up into a map update? Do other people have to solve the same quest as a double check?
I have a question about the pronouns in profiles. I hope it won’t be perceived as transphobic, that’s not my intention. I’m not a native English speaker, so perhaps that’s where my misunderstanding (and possibly awkward turn of phrases) comes from....
Someone on lemmygrad.ml posted this as a comment, for users of instances that block it:
wikipedia itself is more than fine, they just spend a ton of money on other projects thats what the donation drives are mostly funding (most of which suck tbh). Another org that does just fine funding itself through donation is the Organization for Transformative Works (i.e archiveofourown.org)
(if someone could repost this that’s not on an instance blocked by sopuli that would be much appreciated)
Is there a good Android app for using offline OpenStreetMap maps? My primary goal is to have maps that work when I have no connectivity. I’d like to download the entire US (or perhaps another country if I am traveling) and be able to navigate hiking trails where no cell service exists.
EDIT: On Google Play, you get the premium version for free if you make contributions to OSM once in a while. On F-Droid, you get the premium version, for free.
It doesn’t, I’m sorry. I just checked and I was wrong - on Google Play, you get the premium version for free if you make contributions to OSM once in a while. On F-Droid, you get the premium version, for free.
I have an account on Beehaw.org because I like their vibe and moderation policy, an account on sh.itjust.works for the occasional community creation (!olympics promo time) and my main account on jlai.lu which is in my country and language.
So my main choice is regional, and then it’s based on moderation policies & community creation permissions, etc., while on generalist instances. I’m thinking of swapping sh.itjust.works for a smaller, better moderated generalist instance that still allows community creation.
Is anyone in this sub or instance a remote worker? I have been one first partially and then completely for a few years now and I began to think as a kinda of solarpunk way of live that has the potential to propel humanity to a more decentralized and sustainable way of life, specially since I plan to move to a smaller town...
Yes and no - I’m remote and I’m happy with it, it’s fairly recent but I’m planning on finding a nice coworking space to keep social links and community, which is foundational to making a better world. I’m a bit afraid that being remote will damage my ability to organize with other workers and to build a strong foundation for my life on the local scale.
I don’t think remote work is solarpunk in itself, if only because most of our jobs that can do remotely are not very useful to the world. I just try to see it as freeing the commute time so we can spend it building community and building alternatives for the future; it’s not an end in itself.
The more people build instances and the more people create communities outside of lemmy.world, the more resilient all this will be. Lemmy is the kind of place where you can fix your issues by building alternatives.
Hosting an instance has some cost and technical difficulties, so I don’t go around recommending that, but creating an account on a mid-sized instance and creating communities there for what you like to talk about is in everyone’s power.
In universe I mean, not by the reader. I remember the few times I saw stories like that were fairly… cringe; the MC was usually a loner and the people didn’t have a good reason to hate him, if any at all!...
In the Scholomance series, the narrator has this curse of unlikeability over her. But she decides to fully lean into it and is an absolute jerk to everyone, and it’s pretty glorious to see her being so freaking rude to the few people who actually want to befriend her.

I know some of you have gone complies FOSS, but I believe if the developer wants to make money from their apps, there’s noting wrong with it, as long as they are ethical. So what are your favorite non-foss apps?
I have one shelf on my bookshelf which is for books I haven’t read yet. I’m allowed to fill it up however much I want, but never spill out of it. It’s been pretty good for me.
In a slighly sarcastic but mostly happy way, I love when English speakers find out about translation - better late than never to discover what everyone else in the world has been up to these past centuries!
This is such a fascinating story! Rae from the Zoned Out podcast made a series about it - I’m not on her Patreon so I could only listen to the intro episode (first out of three) but was so interested!
It took us three days with breaks in between but we finally finished this giant puzzle. Never underestimate how difficult a thousand pieces could be. It was a really nice offline activity to spend with my partner ♡

Given how much money Google Maps makes with its rate limitations, I can see why other companies want to launch their thing, unfortunately. OSM will remain the ethical option.
I'm the dev of MapComplete, currently stuck on a train. AMA
