My family was secular so I didn't have religion shoved down my throat as a kid. I got curious about church when I was around 8. I went for a year or so then had an epiphany about how nonsensical it was that a loving god would consign people to hell and stopped going.

I toyed around some with occultism in my teens but have been an atheist ever since. Nothing about religion makes sense and I live in the material, rational world.

I've bought three versions of NMS over the years due to platform changes and at one point a snapped disc.

Hello Games also has other titles and they're a small dev team. They're an example of what game companies could do if they wanted to, rather than strangling the player base with microtransactions.

Michael Moorcock is classic, I'm not sure what's in that volume but he rarely disappoints.

Nalo Hopkinson and Nisi Shawl are afrofuturists, and I love their work.

The rest I don't really know but the price is right.

Is the purpose of life to be happy?

When I’m unhappy, I feel like I’m doing life wrong. I’d rather be happy. But is happiness the point of life, or is there more to it? If I pursue happiness, mine first then for those around me, is that selfish? But if there’s a bigger purpose, then what about people with Alzheimer’s or dementia who can’t recall recent...

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

The only purpose to life is to live it. Beyond that, you have to find the meaning that suits you for yourself.

A grief support group could be what you need. Check with her oncologist or your doctor to find one.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

I don't struggle with it. When the end finally comes it will bring peace the likes of which I've never experienced. Life's been hard and as I age, my body is breaking down in little annoying ways that add up into a larger annoyance. The only thing I fear about the end is dying in pain.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

Oh, please. If they were really alien they wouldn't have any DNA in common with us at all. And until samples of the "aliens" are provided to multiple scientists and labs across the globe for peer review, this is just horseshit wishful thinking.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

We've got a planet full of intelligent beings we're busy killing off, so we've never been alone. We're just too speciesist to accept their existence as our equals.

If there were aliens and they had any sense at all they'd quarantine our planet and never let us off it.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

Get real. There's no having a rational discussion, you're not rational.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

One of my birds died a few months back and I cried in terror for the other one (who is still sick on and off). Up until then I thought all my tears had been burned out by a 15 year family court struggle with my abusive ex.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

Thank you. The other one had an emergency vet visit yesterday and I'm waiting nervously for her usual wake up time to see if she's still alive.

One of the top reasons I finally went Linux and I don't regret making the change one bit.

My mother-in-law lives with us and has been diagnosed with Alzheimers. We've been dealing with it for about a year but things are progressively getting worse. What are options for care?

She gets social security, and we don’t have a lot of money ourselves and are no longer able to be with her 24/7. We are in Maryland, and are scared of what we can do. Will her medicare do anything? Is it too late for something like long term care insurance? We have no idea where to start....

Contact your county health & human services agency. Medicaid might be able to help, I don't think Medicare will.

Best way to mass delete reddit content?

I’ve decided that I want to delete my reddit account. I want to remove all of my posts and comments first. What is the best way to do this? I’ve had the account for several years so it would be too tedious to delete everything individually. So far I’ve tried the Redact android app, which did not work when I signed in. I...

I used Power Delete Suite but with the API changes it may not work anymore.

Is it safe to use a swollen battery(less swollen)

Sorry if asking wrong people but I’ve got a samsung galaxy j3 prime, its a really old phone and i lost its charger a year ago, after that until now I was charging it with a different cheap charger, and one day eventually while using the phone the back cover fells of(it has removable back) and then i realised that the battery...

I don't get why this is an unpopular opinion. I love Arby's. And I'm extremely sad that the only one within a 50 mile radius closed during COVID and I can't have Arby's anymore.

Curious and Unknowledgable

Linux is interesting to me, but I’ve never dipped my toes into it because it seems really intimidating (and a lot of loud people act pretty snobbish about it towards non-Linux users, making it seem even more intimidating to get into; I’d rather not be bullied for my choices in software or my ignorance in others)....

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

I got my first Linux system two years ago when I was 57. I took one of the COVID checks and bought a Linux laptop from System76. I had the choice of PopOS or Ubuntu so I just took straight Ubuntu. It was set up and running when I unboxed it and everything I need to know how to do I can just do a web search for. And that's really not much. Best of all the thing starts up in seconds, when Windows was always taking its damn sweet time and shutting itself down for two and three hour updates when I needed to use it. As for gaming, that's what my PS5 is for.

Buying a pre-built, pre-installed Linux system was perfect for me. It might be what would work for you too. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of where to start.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

I personally don't think this is a thing. Acting is pretending. I used to LARP an evil character but it was all just role-playing. Being able to use one's imagination and walk in another's shoes (evil or not) doesn't change who you are as a person. It just makes you a good actor.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

People know the difference between fantasy and reality. Unless someone's questionable anyway I don't think pretending to be evil will change someone. People play violent video games and don't tend to go out and shoot up their neighborhoods. Same thing.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

It's not appropriate to ask a woman out when she's working. Service staff get hit on all day and they're just trying to work.

You can slip her your number if she shows up at your place of business and leave the ball in her court though. If she doesn't contact you then there's your answer.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

I'm speaking as a woman who's been hit on at work. We're paid to be nice to the customers and too many customers take it as some sort of come-on. It's uncomfortable to be put in that position and you should be thinking of her comfort at her place of business above your own desires if you're really into her.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

Good for you for listening, and good luck.

Fun fact: in enthusiast circles they're known as skinny pigs.

What makes a great sci-fi story?

I’m curious what users feel makes a great sci-fi story. What elements do you feel “make or break” the story specifically where sci-fi is concerned? For me, I really enjoyed the Expanse series, as it feels like there’s a sort of “believability” to it all. The authors make everything seem very realistic, even if some...

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

If you liked the Expanse you might be interested in Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars series, and for the same reasons.

As for your original question, for me the important part is good writing and story telling. Some writers' styles just turn me off no matter how good or important the work is. Narrative style is what makes or breaks a book for me no matter the genre.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

I'm not. I was a moderator on one of the subs that got hassled by admin shenanigans and so I deleted my entire post history and closed my account and don't go there anymore.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

It's one I gave myself: I told my adult and nearly adult sons this year that we aren't doing Xmas anymore because we're atheist and anti-capitalist and as a holiday it is counter to our beliefs. The kids didn't care and I'm off the hook from now on. Best Xmas gift ever!

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

Get a large bottle of 91% isopropyl alcohol, block the holes, and fill it. Let it soak overnight. Rinse well and enjoy.

Well, now she knows he's not worth the trouble of the first date.

UziBobuzi,

They can do it anyway, without threads being in the mix at all. Unfortunately the only way to be sure no corporation can scrape your data is to not be on the internet at all.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

If you post something public, people can access it. Corporations can access it. It's one of the reasons I ditched all my social media that identified me directly. They can scrape my stuff, sure; but they won't be able to link it to my actual name, face or existence in real life.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

I don't have a mind's eye, having aphantasia. I can't visualize anything at all.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

I don't need to see something in my mind's eye in order to draw it.

Fun fact: I used to have one but I think trauma killed it. I remember being able to visualize when I was a kid but it's gone now. Another interesting thing about aphantasia is that I still have visual dreams. I just can't do it at will when awake.

Is Mr Beast a good person?

I know this is going to sound like some clickbait bullshit title, but I’m genuinely curious, asking in good faith. My two oldest sons are enamored with him, and he seems like a genuine guy, so I’m asking - is he a nice guy? If you google the question, you get a bunch of reddit hate, which I don’t always trust,...

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

I don't know what kind of person he really is, but I do know that there are tons of scammers that pretend to be him and are ripping off young folks. So your boys should be super careful around him and alleged giveaways.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

I saw someone in the voting thread say "Early Bird" and I really like that.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

I went to high school with a guy named Early so it's not inconceivable.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

People who hoard more money than they can spend in several lifetimes while people are literally dying in the streets cannot be good. These things are mutually exclusive.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

I have all these things because of subsidies and welfare, or I'd be out on the street because I'm a disabled older person on SSDI. And even these things are a pittance, barely allow me to make ends meet, and are always in danger of being cut or completely gutted by the rich fucks hoarding all the money. So yeah, I think multi millionaires and billionaires are bad people by default.

I just have one offering: the cover of Deep Purple's Highway Star by Cory Todd for The Expanse, in Belter patois. https://youtu.be/hCyGIJl1XUA

Now that i'm back from the appointment I had to go to, I can't believe I forgot Hawkwind. Pretty much everything they ever wrote is sci-fi based, some of it on Michael Moorcock's work.

Some faves:

Spirit of the Age: https://youtu.be/2vZX3qt9BXw

Quark, Strangeness and Charm: https://youtu.be/kacmVeeiveQ

Psi Power: https://youtu.be/xYWzj3ojc4E

And then there's Blue Oyster Cult's Veteran of the Psychic Wars, also based on Michael Moorcock's work: https://youtu.be/jGKNaIXtBZQ

I've noticed that some posts and comments are appearing in my scrubbed profile once subreddits that were private open back up. And just the posts/comments in those subreddits. I'm keeping my account open until the 30th so I can periodically check back and make sure there isn't anything else that needs removing.

Are you using Power Delete Suite? You can overwrite comments with an edit before deleting them and it makes things a bit easier than doing it by hand.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

We will be comrades in deletion.

UziBobuzi,
@UziBobuzi@kbin.social avatar

I deleted my 7 year old 1 million karma account, at least all the comments and submissions. As subreddits open back up from private more keep trickling in and I'm having to run Power Delete Suite again to get them all. I am waiting until the 30th before full deletion just to make sure I got everything because I don't want them to profit off my posts and replies in the future.
