Younger users of Lemmy: Did you ever love a game that you just really sucked at?

So I was watching a few youtubes and remembered how the vast majority (of like the ten) nes games me and my sister had were hard as all hell. I loved to play Little Nemo and Street Fighter 2010 but I am pretty sure I never made it past the third level of either. Let alone infamously hard games like The Lion King....

Thisfox,

I recommend you go visit the Dwarf Fortress forums.

Thisfox,

I just tend to buy a powerboard at whatever place I end up. Surprisingly cheap compared to the price of the journey, and a great gift for someone on the last day.

Americans of Lemmy, what is your approach to next year's election?

2020 was… truly unique. It was so hard to stay away from doom scrolling, and I (and many others) were pretty disillusioned by the sad fact that so much of our country legitimately supported the Orange Man. I didn’t get a wink of sleep the night of the election because I genuinely considered it to be a make or break decision...

Thisfox,

Being from an “every vote counts” country with compulsory voting, this seems like such an alien response to me.

Thisfox,

I don’t even have a clue what it means. Sounds like a horse race or a running race, except yank elections never have any politicians fit enough to swim in a race, let alone run in it.

No, we all vote (unless we are rich enough to pay the non-voting fine, many well-off people choose not to vote and pay the fine) and the votes are all counted. I assume you mean they only count USian votes until one team has “enough”? Seems very corrupt, but it doesn’t mean your vote isn’t important.

North America has a lot of countries in it, you don’t seem to realise that?

Thisfox,

Yes, very odd bucket list.

Question to those not in the USA, and who have lived outside the USA.

I’ve been thinking about something and want to check an assumption I have. I only hear directly from other people in the USA, and interract with the global community through memes. How are the gun regulations/laws different from yours in terms of strictness, and do you wish there was more or less where you live?...

Thisfox,

You can, but you need to have a sensible reason to own one. “self defense” isn’t a reason, it is a fantasy.

Plenty of people have target guns and other stuff for club and sport shooting, all carefully locked up when not in use, as is the law, so accidents don’t happen.

Incidentally, we did have a school shooting in the last thirty years. In SA, I believe. No one died and they tightened the restrictions. It worked.

Thisfox,

I am in Australia. Can’t see it either direction.

Thisfox,

I still can’t.

What should be used for anonymous usernames?

More often than not, the best way to hide is to simply blend in with the crowds – this also encompasses one’s choice for a username. It is relatively simple to make a single throwaway account – just come up with a username, and off you go – however, if one makes throwaway accounts often, the task of thinking of a unique,...

Thisfox,

I, too, was immediately going to recommend correct horse. It is random and it works.

Thisfox,

End of study and start of summer is a bizarre feeling. Lot of Uni students working out how to decompress right now. The high school students are finding it tough, but they too will be asking me that question in a matter of weeks.

Thisfox,

Hugs mate.

There are those of us out here who like Discovery. We just happen not to be vocal enough. Take care of yourself and be kind. I enjoy your presence.

Thisfox,

Agree for the expensive stuff, but started buying cheap usb sticks a few years back and yet to have one go bad. They aren’t as quality as fidget toys, no moving parts, but they do the job they were made for, unless you drive over them with a car or something.

Thisfox,

What worries me more is just how many times this has happened, again and again.

Thisfox,

Orville was amazing, everything I remember trek being from my childhood. Weirdly I rewatch that childhood trek now and it isn’t what I remember… But Orville does it right.

Thisfox,

She got out, so has the potential to see the funny side now.

Thisfox,

Riddle me this; Why do Americans frame their answers like questions? Is it some weird meme or something?

Thisfox, (edited )

How bizarre.

Why not just ask questions the usual way?

edit: Evidently everyone really loves this show, as they are downvoting me like crazy for not having heard of it and finding it weird.

Thisfox,

Forums. Those of interests that interest me, specific games forums, OS forums, comic book forums, forums.

Lemmy is just a weird poorly-designed forum I also read.

Thisfox,

Bay12 for Dwarf Fortress ( www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ ), The Nice Forum for Freefall freefall.purrsia.com and Doc Rat www.docrat.com.au , etc. etc. You need to go to your interest first, then join their forum second. I’m sure you have interests different to mine.

Air gap.

Otherwise, no, it is never secure.

Thisfox,

You will become a cargo?

Thisfox,

I see. Thankyou for filling me in, I didn’t know the reference.

Thisfox, (edited )

I thought maybe it was the back of a plastic mannequin torso (you can see the shoulder blades), and wondered why no one wants to put this on a human, and why the mannequin was backwards…

Thisfox,

I was totally stumped too until the answers to your query. I wasn’t thinking northern hemisphere, I guess.

Thisfox,

We had bought a picture frame with the intention of putting a picture in it, but before we did someone fell on it and broke it so it was bent on the top. In an attempt to prevent more damage I hung it from the wall, just an elaborate picture frame, hanging on its wire from a hook, but with some serious damage to the top.

Various housemates kept sticking small postcards with bluetack inside the frame. My favourite was a white card with PERFORMANCE ART written on it. The frame definitely looked like a performance had been made.

Thisfox,

Prevent misinformation. Like the garbage the germany-hater is spouting.

Thisfox,

Try voyager. I can read it.

Thisfox,

Druids man. They are OP, and they are all either too hairy or too lacking in hair, or both.

Thisfox,

I think the yanks are having some sort of election, it usually is around Cup Day. They don’t have compulsory voting like us, so it’s a bit different attitudewise.

Thisfox,

Nah, we have a public holiday for horse races. The Melbourne Cup. (not the American melbourne, the one pronounced “MELb’n” here in Oz).

Thisfox,

My two are rescues also, and they are very good about food. They eat from the bowl, but they don’t overeat. I expected cats that had been so dangerously undernourished as kittens would have overeating disorders, but they are very good.

Thisfox,

That looks like machine embroidery with metallic threads to me. Can already imagine how you would program the machine.

What are your thoughts on a user-driven, officially unofficial radio station for Lemmy?

For the past few weeks I’ve been working on creating my own public radio station (it’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid). Well now it’s up and running but I don’t know what to do with it. So I thought I’d see what Lemmy thinks about the concept, before I go all in and start investing in licensing fees, better...

Thisfox,

No song allowed more than once every two hours.

Could Lemmy be used as a classroom tool (like having a classroom's own instance)

I feel like it would be an interesting learning tool cuz I learn a ton on here and it gets me writing without anyone having to hold a gun to my head. I mean like even essay-length or at least essay-worthy treatments of things I respond to in longer-form, and even for the shorter-form stuff

Thisfox,

…Personally wouldn’t recommend to most of my teenage high/secondary education students, but univerity/tertiary education students would likely benefit from the idea.

Most public (government run) high schools have a private media place for students and staff already, so it’s not like it would be a new concept, and federating them between schools but not to the general public would be an interesting concept.

Thisfox,

Good for you, if that’s the case, but I fear you are in the minority who you know… read. And write. And don’t consider both to be a punishment.

Thisfox,

Having watched so many subarus break down (belonged to neighbours and friends, and I was the person called to rescue them) some of which were brand new, buy any vehicle other than the rubbish sold with a subaru logo on it. Subaru breaks down on dirt roads constantly. Those things can only cope with flat perfect tarmac without hills in a city where public transport is available for emergencies.

A few days ago my brother saw a car on the side of the road at an odd angle, and thought it was for sale. It was not, it was yet another subaru broken down waiting for the flatbed. They just can’t hack it.

Thisfox,

Yep. NRMA inspections for the win. There has got to be a similar service in the US.

Thisfox,

The clue is the coffee. Caffiene addicts are all the same.

Thisfox,

It will last. It is incredible.

Congratulations on a new more shiny life. You deserve it.

Thisfox,

If they get too hot they will move. My cat loves sleeping in front of the fire.

Make sure they always have easy access to fresh clean room temperature water, and they won’t dehydrate.

What is something worth buying as a teen? please explain.

sense most online business are having black friday is it worth buying something or should i pass and try to save my money. im a teen i have around 200$ but i would like to limit myself to 100$ or less. im probably posting this in the wrong place but im not sure, i just want to make a smart choice when it comes to money....

Thisfox,

Just because it’s cheaper doesn’t mean that you suddenly need it when you didn’t need it before.

And just because they tell you it’s cheaper doesn’t mean that it is cheaper.

So go price something you want now, so that when the price theoretically falls you know whether it should be bought at all.

Thisfox,

Interesting, only place I have seen them is in science fiction books, and the occasional scifi themed bar.

Thisfox,

Good point well argued. I had not thought of them!

Thisfox,

and was ‘paranoid about people who he claimed “had the ability to ‘shock’ his genitals with their minds”’

Some people really need to gjve their kids more sex education instead of leaving them in the dark to work it all out for themselves.

Thisfox,

I’m in Australia. Linen Teatowels are pretty common in second hand shops for cheap, and real linen bedsheets and similar are common in Aldi.
